Just recently in the United Kingdom, the Prince oWales gained permission to install solar panels onthe roo o his 180-year-old royal residence Cla-rence House, London. In doing so, the Prince, known or his investment in the potential o youngpeople through his charity the Princes Trust, helped raise the proile o renewable energy andcarbon-reducing technologies.

All over Europe, individuals in business, educationand government (as well as royalty!), are investi-gating ways to attract young talent into the energysector. Science, engineering, technology andmaths have long been in second running to thesocial sciences and arts. This is perhaps becausetheyre perceived as being less exciting than othersubjects or because teaching methods haventalways highlighted the more interesting aspects

o their potential in the labour market. When talking to business leaders across Europe,I oten ask how they attract, and nurture, talent totheir company. However, most say that the challen-ge lies in not only boosting the capability o theirexisting and upcoming labour orce, but alsodeciphering which skills will be most valuable inthe uture. This is particularly the case or theenergy sector, which has movedrom being about gene-

rating and distributing power to saeguarding theplanet, protecting the local environment, workingwith other nations to share resources and urtherdimensions keep adding to the mix all the time. So,science and engineering skills are invariably key,but candidates must be able to apply their know-ledge in untested and ever-changing conditionstoo. While this makes it dicult or those in theindustry to identiy exactly which talents to nurtureor the uture, it does, o course, make the energysector more exciting, and thereore more appealingto the younger generations.

The recent announcement rom the Norwegianand British governments o their joint RenewableEnergy Strategy, whereby Norway will act as anatural gas supplier with the UK serving as a keygas consumer, is anticipated to lead to growth in

the green energy sector. The two nations sharingtechnologies and resources means they will bebetter positioned to take advantage o North Seawind energy projects. Human resource proes-sionals are thereore going to have to thinkcreatively about how to invest in and attract theworkorce that will contribute to the success othese projects.

ENEL Green Powerawarded public contractsfor 90 MW of wind powerprojects in BrazilEnel Green Power, the Enel Group companydedicated to developing and operating

renewable sources in Italy and around theworld, was awarded 90 MW o capacity inthe public tender held in Brazil to promotewind power. The company was awardedthe contract based on three projects withvery high wind potential and a capacityactor o around 50%, among the highestin the world. This means that the windturbines will be able to generate poweror over 4,000 hours equivalent per year, approximately twice the European ave-rage.

The contract was awarded via an auctionthrough which only 528 MW out o around7,000 MW authorized were awarded. Withan installed capacity o 30 MW each,Cristal, Primavera and Sao Judas thenames o these three EGP projects willbe able to generate over 390,000 MWhper year, equal to the consumption oaround 245,000 Brazilian households andavoiding the emission o about 270,000 me-tric tons o CO

    2into the atmosphere.

The wind arms will be constructed in theBrazilian state o Bahia and, due to theirlocation in semi-arid areas, will enjoyincentives targeted at inrastructuredevelopment. Through the tender, EGPalso gained the right to sign a 20-yearcontract to sell the electricity generatedby the three plants through Brazils Cham-ber o Electrical Energy Commercializationat a price indexed 100% to Brazilianination.

This result is very important to us, giventhe excellent qualities o our projects interms o productivity, cost competitivenessand return on investment, said FrancescoStarace, President o Enel Green Power,We are urther reinorcing our presencein Brazil - where we are already active inhydropower, expanding our activities also

in wind power generation. Brazil is a largemarket with abundant renewable resour-ces, and a demand or energy that reectsa continually developing economy.

The three wind arms are scheduled tobegin operation in the second hal o 2013.These new plants will allow Enel GreenPower to double its installed capacity inBrazil and signicantly increase its windpresence in Latin America.

Milestone: Duisburg-Bruckhausen meltshopof ThyssenKrupp SteelEurope produces150 millionth ton ofsteelThe 864-strong workorce at ThyssenKruppSteel Europes BOF meltshop in Duisburg-Bruckhausen had special cause to celebra-te: On August 25 at 11.51 oclock theyproduced the 150 millionth metric ton ocrude steel enough in theory to build15,000 Eiel Towers.

Were proud that our plant and the teamhave reached this milestone, says HeinzLiebig, head o crude steel production atThyssenKrupp Steel Europe in Duisburg.Ater all, our core meltshop equipmentdates rom 1969, making it 41 years old.But by continuously upgrading we havekept it state-o-the-art, in particular withregard to meeting environmentalstandards. Two 380 ton capacity convertersorm the basis or steelmaking atBruckhausen. The meltshop was one othe rst to be equipped with convertergas and dust recirculation systems. Ouracility in Bruckhausen is one o the ewoxygen steelmaking shops able to producehigh-silicon electrical steels as well as theusual carbon steels, adds Liebig. Per year, more than three million tons o moltensteel are cast into up to 2.6 meter wideslabs on the continuous caster and thencut to the lengths and widths required bycustomers. The meltshop has also beensupplying crude steel to the companyscasting/rolling line or the past 11 years.

The hot metal rom the blast urnace isdelivered to the Bruckhausen BOF melt-

shop in torpedo ladles and then processedin several steps to produce steel o therequired quality. Heres a simplied versiono what happens: Pig iron still containsimpurities such as silicon, sulur and phos-phorus. These are removed by oxidationin the converter by top-blowing oxygenthrough a water-cooled lance. This process, which generates temperatures o 2,500 de-grees Celsius, is known as rening. Tocool the boiling steel a converter holdsaround 380 metric tons steel scrap isadded in quantities o ten to 30 percento the overall heat weight. The actualblowing process lasts around 20 minutes.

When it is tapped into a pouring ladle, the molten steel still has a temperatureo 1,650 to 1,750 degrees Celsius. Alloyingagents can also be added during tapping.Due to the high quality requirements orthe properties o the steel, it has to under-go post-treatment, reerred to as secondarymetallurgy.

60 percent o the molten steel is cast intoslabs on the continuous casters. These slabsare supplied to customers o ThyssenKruppSteel Europe or processing on their rollingmills. 40 percent o the molten steel issupplied to the casting/rolling line.

The remelter is positioned in a market ostrategic importance to Hydro, especiallyconsidering that the Qatalum aluminiumplant is expected to reach ull productionin the ourth quarter this year, with Asia

as its main market, says Kjetil Ebbesberg, executive vice president o Hydros MetalMarkets business area.

With an annual production capacity oabout 75,000 tons o high-quality extrusioningot, meeting Hydros standards, theacquisition will strengthen Hydros positionin the ast-growing Asian aluminiummarket.

Consumer study showschanging TV behaviourEricssons ConsumerLab has released theresults o a recent study called MultiScreen Media Consumption 2010. Datawas collected in China, Germany, Spain,Sweden, Taiwan, the UK and US. Thesample in the study is representative omore than 300 million consumers.

The study shows that people are spen-ding up to 35 percent o their leisuretime watching TV and video content, andthat consumers are becoming moreaware o new technologies, which in turnare creating new patterns o mediaconsumption.

At least once a week, 93 percent are stillwatching scheduled linear broadcastTV, but the role o broadcast TV is changingowing to the introduction o new distri-bution channels. More than 70 percento consumers surveyed are streaming, downloading or watching recordedbroadcast TV on a weekly basis, and50 percent are using internet-based on-demand TV/video every week

Broadcast live content is still very importantto consumers, but the ability to decidewhen and how to watch TV will aect therole o linear or scheduled broadcastcontent. The consumers are requesting apersonalized, easy-to-use, high-quality,

on-demand service without commercialbreaks as their next TV service.

Anders Erlandsson, Senior Advisor atEricsson ConsumerLab, says: The con-clusion o our study is that the cons umptionis ragmented and complex. There are ewestablished consumption patterns andits a trial-and-error market with lots ocuriosity around it. The consumer islooking or a solution that can oer themthe reedom to choose what they want, when they want it and how they want it.The user experience is in ocus, rather thanthe technical platorm.

Data shows a clear correlation betweenwhich eatures consumers nd importantand their willingness to pay or them.

Today, the consumer spending is notproportionate to the viewing timeinvested. The average consumer spendsEUR 38 per month on their TV viewing, and almost 60 percent o that relates tobroadcast TV. However, since the timespent watching broadcast TV accountsor only about 40 percent o the total TV/video consumption, it is clear thatconsumers are not paying or what theyuse the most. Ericsson ConsumerLabindings show clearly that consumerspending will shit in the uture, witha signiicant increase in on-demandspending, provided that consumer re-quirements or high quality, ease o useand access to the right content are met.

The study also covers consumers attitudesto the touch screen tablet and how it tsinto their TV consumption; 37 percent arevery interested in using a tablet as a re-mote control.

At Ericsson ConsumerLab studies ocuson how consumers act and what theythink about telecom and TV products andservices, helping operators understandtheir customers and develop revenue-generating strategies.

It was painted in Greis-wald a German town which is the ulti-mate point o the Nord Stream gaspipeline, said Alexey Miller. The portraitwas created in 1712; and exactly 300 yearslater, in 2012, the second string o theNord Stream will reach Germany and the

gas pipeline will be brought to projectedcapacity,he added.

According to Mikhail Piotrovsky, Directoro the State Hermitage Museum, so arGazprom has managed to have the pain-ting exhibited in the Museum. However, the portrait could later be given to theHermitage as a present.

In 2012 a mail stamp will be printed withthis portrait on it. There will be an old mapo the Baltic Sea on the stamp with thecurrent route o the Nord Stream gas pipe-line. A copy o the portrait will be perma-nently kept at the Portovaya compressorstation.

Pipe laying or Phase 1 o the gas pipelineconstruction will be carried out by the Castoro6 and Castoro 10 vessels o Saipem S.p.A, aswell as by the Solitaire vessel o Allseas Group

SA these are the worlds largest pipe layingvessels.

Until April 2011, the bulk o pipe laying ope-rations will be carried out by the Castoro 6 se-

mi-submersible vessel. It is planned to lay anaverage o 2.5 kilometers o pipe per day.

From September 2010 to January 2011 theSolitaire vessel will join pipe laying operati-

ons. Unlike Castoro, it is a dynamic positioningvessel that does not use anchors. The positio-ning system ensures the vessel operation evenin harsh weather conditions.

In the second hal o 2010 the Castoro 10 pipelaying vessel will be working in the vicinityo the Nord Stream gas pipeline landall inGermany. The design o this vessel allows or

its operation in shallow waters. All the pipesor Phase 1 o the gas pipeline constructionhave been manuactured so ar. It is plannedto launch manuacturing o pipes or Phase 2in this AprilMay. 75 per cent o Phase 1 pipes

will be supplied by EUROPIPE, 25 per cent byVyksa Steel Works (VSW). 65 per cent o Phase2 pipes will be supplied by EUROPIPE, 25 percent by VSW and 10 per cent by Sumitomo

    rom Japan.

Nord Stream will become the rst gas pipeli-ne to run under the Baltic Sea. Many aspectso this pipeline construction are similar tothose o other ofshore gas pipelines in theNorth and Black Seas. However, I may say thatNord Stream is the most secure gas pipelinein terms o the environmental impact. At thesame time, the pipe laying speed will be uni-que 2.5 kilometers a day. This speed is veryhard to achieve; however, it is achievable.

Big hangs ar taing pla at FluxysAS. It s part of an ongoing programmof invstmnt, whih involvs svralmajor projts. Dian Mannion tas aloo at what has bn happning.

As well as being the independent operatoro the Belgian natural gas transmissiongrid, Fluxys AS also looks ater the storageinrastructure, and operates both theZeebrugge LNG terminal and theZeebrugge hub. The Fluxys grid, which is,one o the best-interconnected gasinrastructures in Western Europe, acilitates the ow o natural gas to androm many Western countries, and has18 interconnection points.

In 2009 Fluxys AS earned revenue o

688 million, an increase o 95.8 millionon the previous years gure, with a netprot o 105.2 million. Fluxys has a naturalgas storage capacity o 650 million m3(n),which is contained at its plant in Loenhout. It has pipelines extending to 3,900 kilo-metres, a sta o more than 1000, andtransports approximately 17.5 billion cubicmetres o natural gas or the Belgianmarket alone.

As part otheir saety controls Fluxys carry outrigorous testing and adopt practicalprocedures, such as checking pipes andwelding, and ensuring that pipelines aresituated deep underground.

Despite this however, pipes can becomedamaged by third parties and this canunortunately lead to disaster. In responseto the Ghislenghien case o which FluxysAS were acquitted on the grounds thatthey did not make any mistakes, DanielTermont, Chairman o the Board oDirectors comments:

Fluxys will have to make special eortsover the next 10 years to continueexplaining the rigorousness o its saetypolicy to authorized representatives andresidents o those municipalities wherenew acilities are necessary.

    FLUXYSNatural Gas expansion Plans include:

Increasing transmission capacity by 35 %

Facilitating use o the grid by as many sources aspossible

Strengthening the position o Fluxys as a crossroads orgas supplies to and rom North-western Europe

Enhancements to the way in which the grid operates

Improvements to the underground storage acility inLoenhout

    Environmental controls

Ensuring appropriate saety measures are carried out

The RTR2 project is one o the crucial projects beingundertaken. It relates to the construction o a second gaspipeline rom Opwijk to Zomergem, which will help tosecure the supply o natural gas in Belgium and North-western Europe. For this reason it is regarded as a priorityproject by the Euro commission, which is providing 35 million

euros towards its development.Other projects entail increasing the capacity o both theEast to West Axis and the North to South Axis. Additionally, research is being undertaken regarding the possibility oan underground storage area in the Campines region atLimburg, and added enhancements to the LNG terminal atZeebrugge.

With respect to these investments the Chairman o theBoard o Directors, Daniel Termont, states:

In 2009, Fluxys sharpened its vision and its strategy.Continued development o our role as a crossroads or gasows in North-western Europe remains the top priority to enhance the security o supply and the smooth operationo the market. In this regard, the Board o Directors oers its ull support in implementing the robust programmeo investments in new inrastructure in Belgium and theprojects aiming at Fluxysinternational development onthe North-western European natural g as market.

Future for EuropeIn the uture the North-western European gas markets willbecome one entity with Belgium joining orces with theUK, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Luxembourg.

Fluxys AS is preparing or Belgium to play an importantpart in this amalgamation, and wants to build on its existingreputation and excellent position in the market. It is thereorevital or Fluxys to continue improving its grid inrastructurein order to make it more attractive to uture partner countries. With regard to Fluxysdesire to play a key role in this processo integration, the Chairman o the Board points out:

We wish to continue making the Fluxys grid more attractiveso as to ensure that the North-western European gas marketcan provide suppliers with sucient capacity and harmonizedservices For Fluxys, this broadening o scope is crucialto ully realizing its mission o serving the public interestby contributing to enhancing security o supply and thesmooth operation o the market.

North-western Europe with both the LNGterminal and the gas hub situated there. The terminal has docks or loading andunloading o ships as well as an area ortemporary storage o gas. Any LNG keptin temporary storage is either reloadedonto LNG container ships or regasied sothat it can be put back into the grid. SinceFluxys began using the Zeebrugge LNGterminal in 1987, 1,200 LNG ships havedocked there.

Unused gas which has been unloaded atZeebrugge can be utilised or the Belgianmarket or traded via the Zeebrugge huband transported to other Europeanmarkets. Zeebrugge is ideally placed orthe trading o gas, with two main gas owspassing through. These are rom Russiain the East to the United Kingdom in theWest, and rom Norway in the North to

the countries o Southern Europe.Consequently, the Zeebrugge hub hasbecome established as one o the chienatural gas spot markets in Europe.

Record investmentsThe nature o gas transmission meansthat regular maintenance work has to becarried out, such as the repair andreplacement o pipes and taking steps tomake sure that gas is supplied at therequisite pressure levels, but Fluxys maderecord investments in 2009, devoting226 million to the inrastructure. Fluxysinvestment plans are not only or theshort term as it is planning to spend ahuge amount o 2.8 billion over the next10 years.

PKP Energetyka S.A. is an award-winningPolish electricity provider. Originallyocused on the traction power needs orail carriers the company also oers supplyto individual householders and businesses. In 2001, in accordance with EU directives

regarding transport and rail services, thePolish State Railways (PKP = Polskie KolejePastwowe) became the PKP Group, aconglomerate o independent commercialentities; one o these entities was PKPEnergetyka.

The company conducts the sale anddistribution o electricity, the provision ogeneral electric power services includingelectric power cables, lighting, switchingstations, energy management andconsultancy across the power sector andengages in large-scale contracting in the

eld o traction power. Everything is co-

    ordinated by the companys Warsaw

    headquarters.

    However, PKP Energetykas role goes

beyond simply that o an electricity

provider. As Tadeusz Skobel, Chairman o

the Management Board says, The ex-

view (or example in ensuring a reliable

supply o high quality energy) but also in

    interpersonal relations. We consider that

these two ways o understanding goodenergy are equally important.

Powering the railwaysProviding traction power or rail carrierscan be a particularly complex niche in theenergy market. However, it is a niche towhich PKP Energetyka bring a high degreeo expertise. Firstly, in order to ensure anappropriate line capacity in other words, ensure that there is sucient power to

keep the trains running the appropriatelevel o power is ordered (the companydoes not produce its own electricity... yet). Then, to ensure continuity and reliabilityo supply, the traction substations areprovided with back-up power. Largeluctuations in rail traic, especially ingoods deliveries, can complicate mattersbut PKP Energetyka Branches use state-o-the-art IT systems to accurately orecastdemand, taking into account the highvariability o usage. This enables thecompany to keep the power at the properlevel and to orecast exactly the prole o

electricity use, both o which combine tooptimise the purchase price or theconsumer.

In addition to supplying the power itsel,PKP Energetyka also maintain the tractionnetwork, the distribution grid used toprovide access to the power. Teamsconstantly monitor the network statusand traction maintenance trains are keptin readiness nationwide to deal with anyrepairs which may be necessary.

OngoingdiversificationWith an eye on the non-electric rail market, the company has applied to trade liquiduels and in late April 2010, the EnergyRegulation Oice granted a 20-yearconcession. Initially the new Fuel Depart-ment will sell diesel at twelve railway

stations across the country, their locationschosen to ensure that all rail carriers usingcombustion engines will be sure o equalaccess to the new service.

In 2009, under the principle o Third PartyAccess (TPA) that is part o the EuropeanUnion energy policy, PKP Energetykagained 150 new consumers outside o thePKP Group; a 300% increase on 2008 that

led to additional sales o 470,429 GWh oelectricity. A welcome increase in businessin the midst o a global recession.

As or international business, various legaland technical obstacles prevent the tradeo energy outside o Poland. However, other departments are not so restrictedin the sale o their services and PKP Ener-getyka contributed to the construction othe Madrid-Valladolid AVE high speed raillink in Spain. They worked mainly on theconstruction o the traction power net-work, including in the 28km Guadarramatunnel, the ourth longest in Europe.
