What is the International Trade Centre – ITC ?
ITC mission

What is T4SD? A partnership-based effort to provide access to comprehensive information
on private standards & increase opportunities for sustainable production and
trade.

Standards Map
An interactive tool that provides detailed information on “private voluntary standards”
“Private or “voluntary” standards are developed by non-governmental entities,
incl. non-governmental organisations, industry associations, companies, among
others. As such, compliance to these standards is not legally required by national
governments or multilateral regulations as opposed to public mandatory
standards, norms & regulations.”
As of January 2012, Standards Map contains information on:
70 standard systems operational in over 160 countries that cover over 40 sectors;
250 research materials, including academic papers, dissertations, scientific
articles…
Work is in progress to add another 15 standards, as well as 50 new research
materials by the 3l March 2012.
Standards Map is fully translated into French and Spanish.

Participation guidelines Participation in T4SD is free of charge for all standards that meet the following
criteria:
(i) Existence of a published set of criteria & indicators;
(ii) Existence of an implementation system that is operational or nearing
operational status;
(iii) The requirements include criteria that address at least one pillar of
sustainable development.
Data Quality Protocols 1. Information is entered in T4SD Global Database by
ITC staff;
2. External experts quality control the information;
3. Each standard organization has access to the
T4SD database to review its data;
4. Final discussions and sign-off on the data.

• Fee-based for independent researchers and third-party
organizations – with prior approval from standards organizations.
