CAMP UPDATES

http://cemendocino.ucanr.edu/4-H_Program/4-H_Summer_Camp/Camp_Teen_Staff/

Policy and Procedure

When meetings are being conducted at or on private property, your office needs to be aware that these meetings are taking place, and when they are being held. In addition, the owner is required to sign the Attachment D and provide a copy of their declaration page of the property/homeowners' insurance page. UC will sign the Attachment as well and provide our generic certificate. This serves as documentation that these are sanctioned 4-H activities in the event of an injury, or incident.

This is the same procedure used when some-one provides their barn or property for trail rides or training, as well as when there are Master Gardener Tours, or pruning demonstra-tions.

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the last bit of summer. I received confirmation that the 2018 State Field Day will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2018 @ UC Davis. I know State Field day has mainly been on the last Saturday of May, which usually is Memorial day weekend, but I decided to move it off of the holiday weekend for this upcoming year. Once the new Animal Science CES comes on board, we will send out more information. Hello my name is Duncan Cline, I am 17 years old

and this was my last year of 4-H. I have been in 4-H

for 9 years and I've learned so many things. I joined

4-H when I was 8 and I joined the shotgun project for

my first year. From there it has all grown. I have tak-

en over 25 different projects from archery, rocketry,

plant science, public speaking, leadership, rifle, shot-

gun, and computers.

One of my favorite things that I have done in 4-H has

been shooting sports. I started out shooting round

robin shotgun competitions and I am currently com-

peting in multi-gun shoots. Multi-gun is a sport using

up to 3 guns; rifle, pistol and shotgun, in a competi-

tion of speed and accuracy in a tactical situation. The

course changes in every match. I use the safety and

shotgun skills I learned when I first started 4-H. This

is one example, of many, where my projects have

turned into my passions. If you would like to see

some of my progress, check out my youtube channel

by searching Duncan Cline. I also use my speaking

skills and leadership skills within this passion as I

work with the Ukiah Gun Club to bring this sport to

Ukiah.

The second area that I am thankful for the experi-

ence is my computer project, I am now working on a

state committee as a member of the California Edu-

cation Technology Leadership Team. I go to Davis

four times a year and I just got back from Yosemite

for a leadership planning meeting. I worked 12

hours at State Field Day and soon will be going to

U.C. Davis again to work as a leader at State Lead-

ership Conference. I will serve on this committee at

least one more year, and probably more.

PRESTON SCHOLARSHIP WINNER—ESSAY

The most exciting opportunity I was able to take ad-

vantage through 4-H was my position as a National

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)

Ambassador. I am one of seven in the country who is

nationally recognized as leaders in STEM and are

currently serving our home states and at national

events. I led a local STEM project this year. Last

year I flew to Washington D.C. twice to help with Na-

tional Youth Science Day and the world's largest sci-

ence and engineering festival. I will continue to

serve on this committee for the 2017-2018 year and

will be flying to New York for NYSD in October 2017.

I have been very interested in computers and cyber

security for a long time. I was able to earn my

presentation proficiency by giving prepared speech-

es about cyber security and I hope this has been

able help local people protect their online pres-

ence. I plan to continue my education in the Com-

puter Science field at Mendocino College and then

transfer on to complete my degree. I am thankful for

the opportunities that 4-H has given me.

Thank you,

Duncan Cline

SCRIBE’S ARTICLES

Hello 4-H Families,

Tonight we start a new year, I am very excited to get this year going. I really hope that we as a club can recruit some new members and leaders. Talk to your family, your friends, maybe you know some-one who is interested in joining our team. We al-ways have room for new members and leaders. Maybe an adult that wants to take on a new project, or an existing project that doesn’t have a leader now. There is so much more out there that we can do for projects. If you have the time, go on to the 4-H website and look at all the possibilities that are out there. Sewing, quilting, knitting, fly tying, wood working, mechanics, leather working, etc… Tons of projects! Hailey Musgrave Long Valley 4-H

The Fort Bragg 4H met on November 8th for a general meeting. The meeting started off with our Officer Reports. The first officer,s that spoke were the Sergeant of Arms' - Trevor and Temple. They talked about the Recreation winner, Sofia. Skylar Kendl was the next to present the attendance as our Secretary. We had no official Secretary's re-port. She did report on attendance though. Next. our Treasurer, David, reported. He also stated that there was not a Treasurer's Report at this time. The Secretary and Treasurer's report will be stated next meeting. After that was The Club Store reporter, Lane, with updates of what is not stocked and when the orders would be placed. There were no scarves and small and medium hats. Stacey Anderson explained how a new order was coming in soon and that if you needed any certain sizes to ask her before the next order gets put out. After Stacey explained the Club Store Hunter Kendal explained the Historians Book and asked if any-body has or could take pictures of their 4H experi-ence, or anybody's. Then Sylvan has nothing to talk about with the Recreation. Next was Old Busi-ness, Lane talked about the window display that was put up for 2 weeks at Furniture Mart, and how Fort Bragg gave us $50 for the display. Then Tre-vor talked about our old Halloween that was a suc-cess, with food and activities. After that Wyatt talked about the potluck that was going on the night of the general meeting. He also talked about after the potluck there would be awards. Then Lane, again, talked about the Wreaths Across America, which is happening at the Rose Memorial Cemetery on December 16th, starting at 8:00. Next Hunter Kendal talked about the Fire Relief Donations where there was a basket to donate money.

The 4H family was hoping to retain some new rabbits as they were lost in the fire. There was no added business. Off to the new business. First Stacey An-derson talked about making some Christmas cards for Sherwood Oaks, 180 total. Wyatt Hobart talked about 4H camp and had a letter go out to all the old-er officers to sign up as a counselor or to be a teen staff. After that Ronda talked about the Facebook page and how 4H is on there. Teresa explained how google calendar works and wanted us to download it to keep up with meetings and other 4H purposes. Lastly was open announcements. The deadline for signing up to raise and animal is November 15th. There is a fire house party going on at the Fort Bragg Fire Department and they need dishwashers on De-cember 9th. Our Vice President Davis Pyorre signed up all the officers and other volunteers. Next Karen announced the next goat meeting was December 3rd, 1pm at her house. Lastly Wyatt adjourned the meeting and announced the awards.

Northern Area Facebook

I hope everyone's settled into the new 4-H year. I have some updates. The following is a result of a lot of hard work from volunteers or is relevant for our members so please bear with me on the length... I've struggled to pass on information so I would hugely appreciate it if everyone could respond and just let me know they received this email...

1. Please help advertise the Northern Area Face-book page in your newsletters and on your county pages. I hope this group will help combat the well-known issue of communication. Since it's a group, any member can post in it, so ideally it will become a place where folks can share about local events, notable projects, or ask questions. I have been us-ing it to share updates about the Northern Youth Summit but don't be afraid to post in it and show our members how it can be used. Thanks to those counties that are members and share important posts!

2. The Northern Youth Summit (NYS) will take place January 26-28 in Richardson Springs (just north of Chico). Registration is open! Please share the link with your counties, it is for both registration and workshop presenters. If you know of good work-shops in your area and want to nudge people indi-vidually that would be amazing :) The committee is already operating but if any members would still like to join they can contact me.

3. The Area Presentation Days will be hosted by Lassen, Placer, Del Norte, and Yuba-Sutter this year. Lassen and Yuba-Sutter have already set theirs for March 24th, 2018. Can the staff in these counties send me the names and contact infor-mation of the volunteer(s) in charge of these events?

4. The Western Region Leaders' Forum is taking place March 1-4th, 2018 in sunny San Diego. I'm the Marketing Director for the planning committee so I'd be remiss if I didn't push their Facebook page as well. The deadline for workshops has passed but if anyone has a good workshop handy or knows someone who has a high caliber one, they can email [email protected]. The confer-ence is going to be fantastic and a good place to use those professional development funds :) Reg-istration will open next month and will be ballpark $550 (nothing's confirmed so keep that number under your hat)

5. There is a great Handbook for New Families floating around.

6. Lastly, I'm actively recruiting more members for my program committee. I have about four mem-bers from Lassen, Del Norte, Butte and Colusa and would love more. This year our primary focus is going to be compiling educational materials for popular projects to help new project leaders get started.

If you're still reading, thanks for sticking with me! As always, let me know if there's anything I can do to help your county or if you have ideas for my committee!
