A tale of risk and reinvention, American Wine Story portrays oenological aficionados who have taken their obsessions to the extreme, chasing their dreams with a bottle in one hand and a corkscrew in the other. Following the people in America who decide to enter the wine industry, this documentary depicts wine-lovers so devoted to fine wine that they are willing to sacrifice everything for a chance at making their own. From their highest successes to their lowest moments, the winemakers in American Wine Story know one thing: they will never have to look back and say “What if?” 80 min; Wine Country Premiere.

Big Joy

Directed by Stephen Silha & Eric Slade, Co-Directed by Dawn Logsdon(Q&A with filmmakers after screening)

Saturday, May 31, 5:30 pm, Crown Hall, $11 in advance, $12 at the door

“An exuberant documentary. Filmed with an irresistibly playful spirit, dances with words, film clips and images from a long and, it seems, mostly joyous life.” —Moira Macdonald, Seattle Times

Big Joy is a celebratory portrait of James Broughton, a visionary poet and filmmaker who emerged from the artistic renaissance that flowered in post-WWII San Francisco. A charis-matic figure, Broughton led a completely unconventional, countercultural existence, some of it in Mendocino. His life was deeply intertwined with a wide array of artists, activists and spiritual guides, among them movie critic Pauline Kael, dancer Anna Halprin, playwright Kermit Sheets, poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and philosopher Alan Watts. The film offers an in-timate and unflinching portrait of the arc of Broughton’s life, from the dark depths of his early depression to the ecstasy of his creative freedom and sexual liberation, all in the service of his lifelong quest to find his own “Big Joy.” Note: Film contains nudity. 82 min; Official Selection, SXSW Film Festival; Official Selection, Tribeca Film Festival

Botso

Directed by Tom Walters (Q&A with filmmaker after screening)

Friday, May 30, 5:30 pm, Festival Tent, $11 in advance, $12 at the door

“One man’s spirit greater than all the armies of darkness combined – the beauty and truth in mu-sic, as he teaches it, provides hope to a world out of harmony.”—Ed Ochs, The Rock

Sometimes a story is so inspiring that it must be told. Such is the astonishing life of Wachtang “Botso” Korisheli—musician, sculptor, and beloved teacher to generations of children. Born in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia, young Botso was affectionately held by Josef Stalin not long before Stalin’s brutal regime ordered the execution of Botso’s father. Remarkably, Botso was allowed 20 minutes to see his father one last time. Here, inside a dark prison, his father commu-nicated to Botso what was most important about life, words that still inspire him at the age of 92. Eventually arriving in America, Botso became a treasured music teacher, inspiring some of the world’s premier musical artists, including five-time Grammy® Award winner Kent Nagano. 82 min; Audience Choice Award, Maine International Film Festival; Best in Fest Award, San Luis Obispo Film Festival; Official Selection, Tbilisi International Film Festival.

The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden Directors: Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine (Q&A with filmmaker after screening)

Sunday, June 1, 12:30 pm, Festival Tent, $11 in advance, $12 at the door

“So rife with melodrama, exotic lifestyles, sexual intrigue and suspicious deaths that it’ssurprising no film has been made about it until now.”—Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

Darwin meets Hitchcock in this murder-mystery documentary, a gripping tale of idealistic dreams gone awry. Set in the brutal yet alluring landscape of the Galápagos Islands, the film interweaves an unsolved 1930s murder with stories of present-day Galápagos pioneers (a handful of Europeans, Americans and Ecuadorians who came to the islands between the 1930s and 1960s). It is a parable of a search for paradise—and a cautionary tale about a handful of individualists who settle on the same small island while seeking their own distinct and sometimes clashing notions of Eden. 120 min; Official Selection, Berlin International Film Festival; Official Selection, Telluride Film Festival.

Gasland Part 2Directed by Josh Fox (Q&A after screening hosted by Richard Heinberg, Post Carbon Institute)

Saturday, May 31, 10:00 am, Festival Tent, $11 in advance, $12 at the door

This isn’t just about fracking anymore. This is about our system of government, and this is about climate change.”—Josh Fox

In this follow-up to his Oscar®-nominated film Gasland, filmmaker Josh Fox takes a deeper look at the dangers of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, the controversial method of extracting natural gas and oil. The film argues that the gas industry’s portrayal of natural gas as a clean and safe alternative to oil is a myth and that fracked wells inevitably leak over time, contaminating water and air, hurting families, and endangering the earth’s climate with methane, a potent greenhouse gas. In addition, the film explores how the powerful oil and gas industries are, in Fox’s words, “contaminating our democracy.” Executive produced by Debra Winger. 125 min; Official Selection, Tribeca Film Festival.

PRECEDED BY: 300 Years of Fossil Fuels in 300 SecondsThis highly entertaining fashion, this short film presents the history of the use of fossil fuels from their introduction to the present day.

Ghost Town to HavanaDirected by Roberto Chile & Eugene Corr (Q&A with filmmaker after screening)

Sunday, June 1, 10:00 am, Matheson, $11 in advance, $12 at the door

“Leaves the viewer persuaded that a better world is altogether possible.”—Michael Fox, KQED

From Ghost Town to Havana follows two groups of disadvantaged boys, one in Ghost Town (the impoverished and crime-ridden West Oakland) and the other in the slums of Havana, who find solace in baseball. With the help of dedicated coaches, the boys discover that teamwork can yield rewarding results. As they struggle to survive, a portrait emerges of their neighborhoods, families, schools, and cultures. Ultimately, the Ghost Town boys travel to Cuba, where they find themselves warming up to their Cuban hosts, the pressure of life in siren- and shooting-filled West Oakland lifted off their shoulders. While the soul of the film is wholesome, some of the words are not. This film contains strong language that may not be suitable for children. 91 min; Sneak Preview.

The Starfish ThrowersDirected by Jesse Roesler (Q&A with filmmaker after screening)

Saturday, May 31, 3:00 pm, Crown Hall, $11 in advance, $12 at the door

“You never know what can grow from just one thing. You could be inspiring hundreds with just one small action.”—Katie Stagliano, at age 9

The Starfish Throwers explores how three compassionate individuals fight hunger and struggle to restore hope to the hopeless in unexpected and sometimes dangerous ways. Half a world apart, a five-star chef, a retired school teacher and a master gardener fight for what appears to be a lost cause, only to discover their impact may reach further than their actions. In addition to our Crown Hall screening, we are proud to present this profoundly inspirational film to the local Mendocino High School student body. 83 min; Official Selection, Thessaloniki International Film Festival.

States of GraceDirected by Mark Lipman & Helen Cohen (Q&A with filmmakers, Grace Dammann, partner Fu Shroeder, and daughter Sabrina after screening)

Sunday, June 1, 12:30 pm, Matheson, $11 in advance, $12 at the doorDoctor Grace Dammann’s life is forever altered when a driver crashes head-on into her car on the Golden Gate Bridge. After a seven-week coma, she miraculously regains consciousness with her cognitive abilities intact, but her body utterly shattered. We follow Grace as she struggles to find meaning in her radically-altered life and eventually returns to medicine to found an inno-vative clinic. From doctor to patient to doctor again, we trace Grace’s remarkable recovery and the unexpected journey of a family in the wake of a devastating crisis. 74 min; Sneak Preview.

Symphony of the Soil Directed by Deborah Koons Garcia (Q&A with filmmaker after screening)

Saturday, May 31, 3:00 pm, Noyo Theatre, Willits, $11 in advance, $12 at the doorSunday, June 1, 12:30 pm, Crown Hall, $11 in advance, $12 at the door

“Unfolding with gentle joy and unexpected beauty, this ode to the miracle of the Earth’s topmost layer gives us a newfound respect for the ground beneath our feet.” —Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times

Symphony of the Soil explores the complexity and mystery of soil. Filmed on four continents and including interviews with some of the world’s most esteemed soil scientists, farmers and activists, this film portrays soil as a protagonist of our planetary story. Using a captivating mix of art and science, the film shows that soil is a complex living organism, the foundation of life on earth. Yet most people “treat soil like dirt,” never realizing soil’s remarkable nature. 104 min; Official Selection, Wild & Scenic Film Festival; Food Award, Cinema Verde Film Festival 2013.

Toxic Hot SeatDirected by Kirby Walker & James Redford (Q&A with filmmakers after screening)

Saturday, May 31, 12:30 pm, Crown Hall, $11 in advance, $12 at the door

“As galling as this story of deception, abuse, and greed might be, the other story told by Toxic Hot Seat is more hopeful. It’s just one step, but it’s a step forward rather than back.” —Cynthia Fuchs, PopMatters

Toxic Hot Seat follows a courageous group of firefighters and mothers, journalists and scientists, politicians and activists as they fight to expose a shadowy campaign of deception that left a toxic legacy in our homes and bodies—a campaign so cunning, it’s taken nearly 40 years to unravel. 91 min; Audience Choice Award, Mill Valley Film Festival.

Tricky Bidness

Directed by Lynne Canning & Joann Schuch (Q&A with filmmaker after screening)

Sunday, June 1, 3:00 pm, Festival Tent, $11 in advance, $12 at the door

Lying smack-dab in the heart of America’s marijuana-growing country, the small college town of Arcata, California has evolved as a long-time pot-friendly community. In recent years, however, Arcata residents have also come to recognize that their biggest unregulated industry has some unexpected consequences. Tricky Bidness is a thoughtful hometown look at the complexities of marijuana growing—culturally, legally and personally—through the eyes of the people who have lived with it in their community for over 40 years. 70 min; Official Selection, Salt Spring Film Festival; Official Selection, Santa Cruz Film Festival.

Walking the Camino: Six Ways to SantiagoDirected by Lydia Smith

Friday, May 30, 3:00 pm, Festival Tent, $11 in advance, $12 at the door

“People come from all over the world to walk this walk. By the end, you’re likely to not just under-stand why people do it, but consider giving it a shot yourself.” —Sherilyn Connelly, SF Weekly

The mesmerizing Walking the Camino takes us on a journey with six unique strangers from around the world as they attempt to cross an entire country on foot—with only a backpack, a pair of boots, and an open mind. Driven by an inexplicable calling and a grand sense of adventure, these pilgrims throw themselves heart-and-soul into their physical trek to Santiago, Spain, and, most importantly, their personal journeys to themselves. 84 min; Best Documentary, Hollywood Film Festival; Audience Favorite Award, American Documentary Film Festival.

WatershedDirected by Mark Decena; Produced by James Redford (Q&A with filmmakers after screening)

Sunday, June 1, 3:00 pm, Matheson, $11 in advance, $12 at the door

“The Colorado is one of the most iconic natural landmarks of the American West andit’s facing unprecedented demands on its water, a resource historically taken for grantedby those of us who have enough.”—Robert Redford

Narrated by Robert Redford, Watershed tells the story of threats to the once-mighty Colorado River through heartening character vignettes that reveal a new water ethic as well as 21st Century solutions. With agricultural usage, population growth, current energy demands, and climate change creating an unsustainable situation, the Colorado River is diminishing, already running dry before its natural end at the Gulf of California. Unless action is taken, the river’s retreat will continue—a potentially catastrophic scenario for the millions who rely on its availability. 56 min; Golden Sun Award, Barcelona International Environmental Film Festival; Best Conservation Film Award, Bend Film Festival.

PRECEDED BY: Among GiantsDirected by Chris Cresci, Ben Mullinkosson, and Sam Price-Waldman

Risking injury and incarceration, an environmental activist disrupts the clear-cutting of an ancient redwood grove by sitting on a tiny platform a hundred feet up in the tree canopy. Already three years into the tree-sit when filming begins, Among Giants blends vérité cinematography with intimate personal reflection to create a vivid picture of life in the trees and the unwavering dedication of the activists. 13 min.
