TOXIC FOOD FOR DOGS

All dog owners are tempted to one day give their 4 legged companion, who fixed with its irresistible pleading

look, a little dinner. But be careful, because by trying to please your dog, you might cause him health

problems.

Apricots, cherries, peaches, pears, plums :

Kernels or seeds contain cyanogenic glycoside which can cause poisoning. Symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, tachycardia, coma, death. It is therefore necessary to remove all kernels before giving the fruit to your dog.

Vegetables Garlic :

Contains a toxic substance, thiosulphate, it seems that it is less toxic than onions and large amounts should be absorbed to cause poisoning.

Alcohol :

Consumption of a small amount of alcohol can confuse the dog, make some nervous and aggressive. A high dose can inhibit the central nervous system, breathing and heart rate, leading to death.

Spoiled food :

Mold that have found the most spoiled food contains toxins such as penicillin or trémorgènes mycotoxins. The symptoms result in tremors and seizures that can last several hours or even several days. This type of poisoning is considered an emergency and medical treatment is needed to control tremors and detoxify the dog. Pay particular attention to the compost bin that could be in your garden.

Baby food :

.

Before giving baby food to your dog, make sure it does not contain onion powder, which can be toxic to your dog.

Cat Food :

Generally too high in protein and fat. It increases the risk of pancreatitis in our doggies.

Avocado :

The avocado contains a toxic element called Persine which can damage the heart, lungs and other tissues in most animals.

Egg white :

Contains avidin, which destroys biotin, vitamin B8, useful metabolism of proteins and fats.

Sweets and sugar-free foods :

Candy and sugar-free foods containing xylitol are considered dangerous for pets. This component can cause liver damage and even death in some dogs.

Caffeine :

Drinks containing caffeine such as sodas, tea or coffee may act as stimulants and accelerate the heart rate of the animal. The ingestion of caffeine can cause seizures, sometimes fatal.

Mushrooms :

Just like humans, poisoning by fungi can be fatal. They can cause serious liver problems and neurological disorders. Consult your veterinarian immediately if you suspect your pet has eaten mushrooms.

Chocolate :

Chocolate contains theobromine, a component that acts as a cardiac stimulant and as a diuretic. If a dog eats too much chocolate, it can become excited and hyperactive. Due to the diuretic effect, it will urinate and drink a lot. It may also have diarrhea and vomiting. The effect of theobromine on the heart is more dangerous. Theobromine will either increase the heart rate or cause irregular heartbeats. Death is even possible, especially if the dog is exercise. Large quantities of chocolate can poison or even kill a dog of medium or large size. 50 grams of chocolate can kill a dog weighing 5 kg or less. Symptoms often do not appear until a few hours and death occurs within 24 hours. Cocoa powder and cooking chocolate are the most toxic forms because they contain more theobromine than milk chocolate. Followed by dark chocolate and semi-sweet chocolate. Milk chocolate is the least dangerous.

Many of you from time to time give a small square of chocolate to your dog to make him happy and without it causes intoxication. Unfortunately chocolate is not good for cats. Indeed, it contains the alkaloid theobromine in, which is toxic to them.

Dark chocolate is rich in theobromine than milk chocolate or cocoa powder.

White chocolate has no toxicity against.

Brachycephalic breeds like the French Bulldog, the English Bull Dog, Boxer, Carlin would be more susceptible to chocolate poisoning, probably because of their susceptibility to cardiac and respiratory problems.

As an example, a tablet of 200 grams of dark chocolate can easily kill a dog breed average.

Symptoms after ingestion of chocolate the dog:

The first signs may take a few hours to appear.

Digestive symptoms:

Theobromine in dogs causes irritation of the stomach with an increase in the secretion of gastric juices.

The dog can then have digestive problems such as vomiting or diarrhea. In the long term, increased gastric secretions can give a stomach ulcer.

* If the dog consumes a large amount of chocolate, theobromine will then pass into the blood and nervous and cardiac signs will appear.

The nervous symptoms:

The dog becomes nervous, agitated and may have tremors. In severe cases, the dog may have seizures and then slip into a coma and die.

Cardiac symptoms:

Theobromine is responsible for heart rhythm disorders of the animal. The dog may have a rapid heart rate (tachycardia) or abnormal contractions of the heart called "Premature".

Other symptoms:

Often the dog has a more rapid breathing and pants. Theobromine also has a diuretic action. Therefore, the dog drinks more and therefore more urine. In acute poisoning by ingestion of a large quantity of chocolate, death can occur within 6 to 24 hours.

In cases of chronic intoxication, for a dog consumes chocolate for several days, the animal may have a progressive heart failure.

Treatment:

There is no antidote for theobromine despite the veterinarian will develop a symptomatic treatment.

If the dog ingests a large amount of chocolate, it must take in an emergency at your veterinarian may implement the appropriate treatment. The speed of implementation of care affects the prognosis.

The treatment will attempt to limit the intestinal absorption of theobromine contained in chocolate. This is why your dog should be treated by a veterinarian after ingestion. If the first signs appeared nervous, medications can be used to control seizures.

Theobromine is easily removed by the body of the dog, which explains that monitoring by the veterinarian addict animal is often long.

To avoid poisoning, do prevention:

In times of celebration, be especially vigilant. You arrange for your dog does not have access to pieces of chocolate that you'd inadvertently left corner.

Inform your guests and children about the dangers of chocolate for dogs!!

Cabbage, turnip :

Ingestion causes of gases due to fermentation in the stomach and causes diarrhea.

Human vitamin supplements containing iron :

They can damage the digestive system and be toxic to many organ such as the liver or kidneys.

Extracts of lemon oil :

The oil of lemon extract can cause vomiting.

Liver :

Given reasonable amounts, the liver is very good for your dog. In reality, it is an excess of liver that can be harmful because it can lead to hypervitaminosis A. Do not abuse the liver in the diet of your dog. Symptoms: deformed bones, excessive bone growth on the shoulders and spine, weight loss and loss of appetite.

Bold :

It can cause inflammation of the pancreas that can be fatal if not treated in time. In the most severe cases, the animal does not move and suffers when resting on its belly. Veterinary Emergency Management.

Raw beans :

A significant amount of raw beans absorbed by the dog cause diarrhea, inflammation of the stomach and intestines, cramps.

Raw foods are difficult to digest, because the fibers. But barf, vegetables are mixed, so the fibers are split so much easier to digest!

Cooked green beans are excellent for dogs needing to lose weight. It is also advisable to cook frozen green beans because unsalted. The responsible toxin is eliminated by cooking.

Corn, wheat and soybeans :

Avoid foods that contain corn and soy in any form. These ingredients are known to be difficult to digest for dogs. They mainly act as fillers, that is to say they have no (or almost) nutritional value and are used to fill the stomach (by absorbing water in the stomach) and therefore provide the feeling of satiety to the animal.

Wheat is an ingredient that can provide nutritional value to your pet's diet, but it is still as a filler. In addition, many animals develop allergies.

Choose whole grains, such as brown rice, oats, millet and barley.

Sweet chestnuts :

They contain tannins in turn can cause various disorders: vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, or occlusion.

Nuts :

Nuts in general are not ideal for pets as they are very rich in phosphorus and low digestible for carnivores.

Macadamia Nuts :

The toxic component is unknown, but the ingestion of as little as six nuts can cause a rise in temperature, increased heart rate, tremors and weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters quantities. Symptoms: difficulty getting up, distress, panting, swollen limbs and pain in the limbs.

Nutmeg :

Nutmeg is hallucinogenic when ingested in large quantities.

Onions, shallots and leeks :

Onions, shallots and leeks can cause hemolytic anemia, which means that the red blood cells are destroyed prematurely in the blood, while their rate of production remains normal. Poisoning can occur either through ingestion of large quantities either by repeated ingestion of smaller quantities. The poisoning may occur a few days after the dog has eaten onions. Vomiting, diarrhea, weakness and loss of appetite may occur. The urine is a dark color. The dog may have shortness of breath because the number of red blood cells (which carry oxygen) occurs reduced. Other symptoms include: high body temperature, confusion, and increased heart rate.

Cooked bones :

Cooked bones can be very dangerous for your pet. The bones become brittle once they are cooked which form splinters when they break. The splinters have sharp edges and can get stuck in the teeth, cause choking or perforation of the stomach and intestinal walls. Symptoms of choking: pale or blue gums, panting, the dog touches the head with feet, slow breathing, unconsciousness, dilated pupils. Raw bones are not dangerous and help keep teeth clean. The bones are rich in calcium and too much bone can cause severe constipation.

Dough, pizza :

When the dough (and pizza) is ingested, the body temperature of your pet makes the dough rise in the stomach. While the dough rises, alcohol is produced. Symptoms: Abdominal pain, vomiting, disorientation, depression. A little bit of bread dough can already cause problems because it swells to many times its size. Bread can be eaten if it is stale.

Raw fish :

It can lead to a vitamin B deficiency leading to loss of appetite, weight and sometimes death. These problems are more common if the dog is fed raw fish regularly.

Potatoes mud and peels :

Raw potatoes contain calcium oxalate, an insoluble ionic crystal very dangerous for our pets urinary tract. Moreover, 80% of kidney stones are composed of calcium oxalate. Once cooked, the potato is ideal for our animals because it is rich in nutrients.

Dairy :

Most dairy products are digested poorly by dogs who often have little or no enzyme needed to digest lactose. Just like humans, dogs are lactose intolerant can have flatulence and diarrhea. Rich in lactose, milk can cause vomiting, diarrhea and other intestinal problems. In fact, dogs and puppies do not have enzymes to dissolve the sugar and therefore their intestines can not absorb. Cheese and yogurt are better tolerated because they contain less lactose. Although few dogs tolerate milk, in general, prefer fermented dairy products.

Grapes and raisins :

(highly toxic!) intoxication grapes or raisins has been highlighted recently in the dog. The ingestion of this fruit can cause digestive problems (vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea ...) and renal (acute renal failure) may lead to death. This is the pectin contained in the grapes, which is toxic to our furry. The dog seems to be the only sensitive to the poisoning species. For now, the mechanism of toxicity is the object of assumptions. But ingestion of grapes, cluster or dry, is to be avoided in dogs ... Although the minimum lethal dose is not known, grapes can be toxic to dogs if ingested in large quantities. Symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, kidney failure 24 hours after ingestion. In clinical observations, the amount of grapes eaten varied between 250

Page 13: TOXIC FOOD FOR DOGS

grams and 900 grams, which is something between 10 and 30 grams per pound of body weight. It was reported that two dogs died directly from intoxication, three were euthanized and five remained alive. Because of the severity of symptoms and increased mortality potential, veterinarians recommend treatment that includes the induction of vomiting, gastric lavage and administration of activated charcoal, followed by intravenous administration of fluids during at least 48 hours.

Brown rice :

Rice bran (which is present with brown rice and not white rice) is quite irritating to the gut, and so we avoid giving brown rice alone. If the dog does not support it, but refuses vegetables, can produce white rice and usual amount of wheat bran fiber composition which is different from rice bran, and is better tolerated.

Raw Salmon :

Salmon poisoning can be a problem for anyone who feeds her dog with a feed BARF or Raw Feeding kind. The cause of the poisoning is an infection by a bacterium called Rickettsia type Neorickettsia Helminthoeca. Rickettsia not directly infect the dog but is carried by a parasite (a flatworm) called Nanophyteus Salmincola through two intermediate hosts: the freshwater snails and salmonid fish. The Nanophyteus Salmincola infects certain species of freshwater snails that are in turn as links in the food chain, eaten by salmon. Neither to nor Rickettsia are deadly for salmon. The dog is exposed only when it ingests the secondary host, an infected fish. Once the dog has eaten the fish, worm larvae burst and release rickettsiae. The first symptoms appear 5-7 days after ingestion and result in lethargy and loss of appetite. Body temperature reaches 40-42 ° C during the first two days and then returns to normal. On the fourth day, the vomiting becomes persistent. A few days after the onset of vomiting, one sees diarrhea with blood. Diarrhea is usually yellow. The lymph nodes are swollen. At the most advanced stage, gastrointestinal symptoms are almost similar to the parvovirus. Nasal and ocular symptoms can resemble those of distemper. Untreated, salmon poisoning is fatal in 90% of cases. Poisoning can be diagnosed by stool analysis and is curable if detected early. Treatment includes hydration support, administration of antibiotics to kill the rickettsial and deworming to kill the parasite. An improvement in the general condition is already being felt in two days.

Preventive actions are simple. Avoid raw salmon. If you live near a river where salmon live, keep an eye on your dog to prevent it from eating dead fish. Consult your veterinarian immediately if you suspect your dog has ingested raw salmon. This warning is valid only for the Pacific salmon.

Canned Tuna :

Very salty, canned tuna promotes kidney damage and can lead to heart problems. There is, however tuna for your pet to your veterinarian.

Salted meat or ham :

Rich in fat and preservatives, they are all based on salt and salty meat sausages are very dangerous for dogs. They produce stomach pain and pancreatitis. Because salt the meat can cause unusual water consumption and cause gas that can kill the animal.
