SUBMITTED BY DOMINION PRESIDENT PATRICIA VARGA – THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION
THANKS TO THE TROOPS
As the combat mission in Afghanistan transitions into other military activities, The Royal Canadian Legion would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to those service men and women, and their families, who have served with distinction and sacrificed on behalf of Canadians during these past several years.
Their contribution to the well-being and care of another country’s populace is a tremendous reflection of Canada’s effort toward maintaining global peace, and we are proud of the way you have represented us.
Words are not enough to convey how grateful we are for their commitment and dedication. As a national endeavour, I am encouraging local branches to hold appreciation events for veterans of the Afghanistan mission this coming August, in order to remember those who have fallen, thank those who have returned, and to celebrate how proud you and your families have made us to be Canadian.

THIS IS TORNADO COUNTRY: SIX ESSENTIAL SAFETY TIPS
With recent events a vivid example of the damage Alberta’s extreme weather can bring, keep in mind that the tornado season is almost here.
“Because tornadoes can develop very rapidly, it is vital that people know what to do in a weather emergency to reduce the risk of personal safety and property, Environment Canada cautions.
11
Here are a few reasons why Albertans need to be alert to tornado safety:
• Deadly tornadoes hit a campground at Pine Lake in central Alberta on July 14, 2000 and the City of Edmonton on July 31, 1987.
• The Pine Lake tornado killed 12 people and the Edmonton tornado killed 28 people.
• The worst tornado in Canada’s history struck the City of Regina on June 30, 1912. Nearly 30 people died and more than 2,000 buildings were destroyed.
Here are some “tornado basics”:
• Tornadoes can be recognized by a funnel cloud hanging from the base of a dark storm cloud
• When Environment Canada has reliable information that a tornado has been detected or is imminent, a Tornado Warning is issued through the media or Alberta’s Emergency Public Warning System
• Be clear on tornado terminology:
-A Tornado Watch is an advisory only. It means all the conditions that could lead to a tornado are present. It does not mean one will occur - keep posted! -A Tornado Warning means a tornado has or is about to touch down. If the warning is for your area, take immediate precautions and keep posted!
Planning ahead and staying alert saves lives and reduces property damage. Here are some tips:
• Plan ahead: At home, have a family tornado plan in place, based on the kind of dwelling you live in.
• Be weather-alert: Keep an eye on the sky, learn about the signs of severe weather, and listen for severe weather watches or warnings.
• If a tornado threatens, take shelter immediately, preferably in the lower level of a sturdy building.
• Stay away from windows, and outside walls. Flying glass and debris poses the largest danger to human safety.
• If caught outdoors, with no shelter available, lie flat in a ditch, ravine or other low - lying area, and shield your head with your arms.
• If you are driving, get out of the car and seek shelter in a low-lying area away from the vehicle - which could easily flip.

“ANOTHER THOUGHT”
If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem

MINIMIZE LIGHTNING RISK: FOLLOW THE 30/30 RULE Did you know that a bolt of lightning is up to one million times more powerful than a household current?
Thunderstorms are common in Alberta, along with accompanying lightning flashes. Across Canada, lightning flashes are estimated to occur every three seconds:
• Each year an average of six or seven Canadians die from lightning strikes and more than 60 are injured
• Even if the sky is blue and it is not raining you might be in danger - lightning can strike from several kilometres away
With outdoor athletic activities and events a staple of Alberta communities in summer, municipalities have a role to play in promoting lightning safety practices. Here are some tips from the Alberta Emergency Management Agency and the Canada Safety Council:
12
• Many lightning fatalities and injuries occur as a storm is approaching, due to people ignoring warning signals such as rain and high wind
• The high danger zone is considered to be less than 10 km away
• A good rule of thumb is the 30-30 Rule -if you can count 30 seconds or less between hearing thunder and seeing lightning, seek shelter immediately
• Do not seek shelter under trees, as you might receive a strong shock if the tree is hit
• Do not resume outdoor activities again for 30 minutes after the last thunder clap
It is critical to know what to do - and what not to do:
• Do not seek shelter under trees, as you might receive a strong shock if the tree is hit
• Do not seek shelter in a shed or small open building
• Do not lie down on the ground • Do not take a shower or bath, as lightning
might strike the plumbing system • Do not use a land-line phone or electrical
appliances unless absolutely necessary • Do not hold a golf club, umbrella or
fishing rod
Do the following:
• Stay clear of high ground and open spaces
• Seek shelter in a house, large building or motor vehicle
• Keep windows and doors shut • If you are boating, head for shore - if
caught on the water, crouch low in the boat
• If you are in a flat open field, bend down and put your hand on your knees - strive for minimum contact with the ground
• Stay away from water and avoid contact with metal

Ron Lagemaat REALTOR®
sutton group – lethbridge (403) 320-641 Selling Tips for the Summer Market Flowers in bloom, inviting green lawns, and interiors warmed by abundant natural light are all great reasons to sell during the summer months. If you plan to put your home on the market this season, consider these tips to ensure that your home sells quickly and for the best possible price. Outdoor appeal - Many buyers begin their home search online and the first image they see is typically the outside of the building. For house owners this is a fantastic opportunity to create a positive first impression, especially in the summer. A lush, green lawn and groomed landscaping are very appealing. For a relatively small investment of time and money on plants, lawn fertilizer, and paint, homeowners can reap significant returns. Get rid of the weeds. Filling cracks in the driveway and sealing is often a relatively simple and inexpensive repair. Balconies and decks - Start by clearing away the clutter. Clean the floors, glass, and railings. Show prospective buyers how relaxing the space can be with comfortable, attractive outdoor furniture, fresh flowers and a few accessories. Indoor improvements - How much renovation spending is too much? Your house certainly may sell more quickly but you may not recoup the full investment in the selling price. Address critical problems in the home such as replacing a broken dishwasher, cleaning the carpets, and repairing a faulty garage door opener. Next, look at the house critically as a house – no longer as your beloved home. Are there areas that seem outdated? Fashions change quickly for cupboards, countertops, tile and fixtures. If a complete renovation is beyond your budget, consider replacing just one or two aspects of the room. Home Staging - This is all about using colour, furniture placement and accessories to maximize the attractiveness of a home with the goal of improving the sale price and/or reducing the time on the market. Designer décor appeals to many prospective buyers but if a professional consultation is beyond your budget, try these ideas: - clear away clutter, personal items and photos, and any unnecessary accessories - be sure your home is adequately lit; add lamps and overhead lighting where needed - consider repainting in a neutral colour, feature walls are good but don’t overdo them - remove excess furniture and create clear pathways around the remaining furniture - be sure that artwork complements a room without but make sure they are of generally appeal. - “Good smells are good sells” Go green! - Be sure to let your REALTOR® know about all the green features of your home such as drip irrigation, foam insulation, insulating windows, high efficiency appliances, etc. If you are planning to renovate prior to listing your home, consider buying products that are environmentally friendly. Pets - If you have a cat, be sure the litter box is cleaned often. Dog owners should give Fido a bath and if possible, keep pets out of the home during showings. Deodorize and thoroughly clean any spots. Have your REALTOR® help you with these suggestions and don’t be offended by their honest response, they should always help you get your best dollar
