Smart city: definition

Many orientations/definitions of “Smart Cities” but its main features are: • technologically (especially ICT) oriented to improve competitiveness and

ensure a more sustainable future • interconnected networks of people, businesses, technologies,

infrastructures, consumption, energy and spaces (systemic approach) Its strategies and initiatives must include at least one of the following characteristics: • Smart Governance • Smart People • Smart Living • Smart Mobility • Smart Economy • Smart Environment

UNECE Smart city definition An inclusive, safe, resilient, sustainable and “connected” city for all

SDG 11

Main features: • ensure access to adequate and affordable housing • provide access to safe, affordable and sustainable

transport systems • enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanization • safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage • reduce the number of deaths, displacement and losses

caused by disasters • reduce their environmental impact • provide universal access to safe and accessible green and

public spaces • support positive economic, social and environmental links

between urban and rural areas • integrate innovative technologies and ICT within the

different sectors

Main issues to become smarter

Lack of data and data-use access

Lack of resources – human and financial

Scarce internet access

Lack of a policy framework to encourage innovation

Lack of information, experience and skills

Overcoming the issues

o Economical perspective: Centralisation of investments in the capital Dependence from the central government Demise of ‘light’ industries in the last decades and few operating SMEs Weak performance, inspection, maintenance and bad quality of some infrastructures (water distribution

system, streets, etc.) Weak infrastructure for information and communication technologies (ICT) High costs for energy for households and enterprises

• A workshop process developed by the AtKisson Group

• Used around the world in schools, universities, and professional training programs as tool for learning

• Also used in companies, government agencies, etc. as a tool for planning programs and initiatives on sustainability

• To accelerate learning and engagement in the UN process of creating global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the period 2015 - 2030

• To generate ideas and initiatives that will inspire people to get involved

• To engage people and invite them to share their opinion in an informal environment
