The museum features two permanent exhibitions. “The Cerkno Region through the centuries”, the exhibits, documents and photos of which present different segments of administrative, economic and cultural life as well as the quotidian of the inhabitants from the 11th century onwards, and “Blame it on the Carnival! – The story of the laufarji from Cerkno”, dedicated to one of the most recognizable Carnival groups in Slovenia. Their particularity are the masks made out of linden wood with the most human-like aspect in Slovenia. The Franja Partisan hospital (GPS coordinates: 46.150073, 14.027254), a cultural monument of national importance, features on the Tentative List of the candidates for a UNESCO World Heritage List and is an owner of the European Heritage Label. The monument was completely renovated after having been destroyed in the flood of 18 September 2007. Despite the loss of authentic material, it remains a symbol of resistance and solidarity and, most of all, a valuable memorial to humanity and comradeship.OPEN: 1 April – 31 September every day: 9 AM – 6 PM; 1 – 31 October every day: 9 AM – 4 PM; 1 November – 31 March: announced groups in good weather conditions.

The France Bevk homestead in Zakojca at Cerkno (GPS coordinates:46.1664, 13.922102) In 1990, the house where the famous Slovene writer spent his youth was remade into a museum featuring two expositions on ethnology and on the history of literature. The former illuminates a typical setting of a poor farmer’s house, while the latter presents the writer’s life through books, photographs and exhibits. The Idrija municipal museum protects the rich technical and cultural heritage of the Idrija-Cerkno region. It keeps, studies and presents to the public the material connected to the history of the area, and manages the important monumental real estates. Soon after it opened, it moved its headquarters to the ancient mine’s castle of Gewerkenegg where it is housed still. In 1997, the museum was awarded with the title of the best European museum of industrial and technical heritage.

The central exhibition focuses on the 500-year-old history of the second largest mercury mine on the world, the origin and the development of Idrija, the crucial events in the history such as the two World Wars, the ancient way of life in Idrija, the important local figures and the scientists end explorers who lived and worked here, as well as the Idrian lace. The most beautiful and the most valuable lace specimens are stored in the so-called “Lace treasury”. OPEN: Every day: 9 AM – 6 PM.

The expert guidance of Idrian curators will also take you to the Idrian miner’s house where you can see the living arrangements of a miner’s family from the beginning of the 20th century; the Idrija kamšt – a pumping device driven by the largest wooden water wheel (with the diameter of 13,6 m) in Europe; the Francis’ Shaft with a rich collection of mining machines and instruments, among which reigns the renovated and “in situ” presented Kley pump; and the Slovenia Partisan Printing Shop in Vojsko (GPS coordinates: 46.034642, 13.899457)–an authentically preserved monument from the times of the Second World War that issued the only printed newspaper of any resistance movement in Europe. The printing shop is opened for public from 15 April to 15 October every day: 9 AM – 4 PM.

The path will lead you through illuminated tunnels from the hidden corners with the precious cinnabar ore and drops of pure mercury to the unique underground chapel. You will descend the shaft and see the representations of various ore extrapolation methods.

W: www.turizem-cerkno.siThe Divje babe, a karst cave in the steep rocky slope that descends from the Šebrelje plateau to the Idrijca river valley, are a paleontological archaeological site where skeletons of cave bears and traces of Neanderthal men, their fireplaces and stone tools were found. The most famous finding is the 55 000-year-old 4-hole bone flute that the Neanderthal carved out of a cave bear bone. The bone flute is the oldest music instrument found in the world, a fact that gives the Cerkno Region the name of “the cradle of world music”.

The M Aquarium is said to be the most beautiful and the most diverse public aquarium in Slovenia. More than 200 m2 house over 40 aquariums among which you can see a 1500 l sea aquarium, multiple biotope aquariums and a biotope paludarium of the Amazon River. They host over 170 different freshwater and seawater species of fish. The Aquarium features different courses and numerous additional activities, guided by professional staff that will gladly invite even larger groups to join.OPEN: The Aquarium is opened from Tuesday to Friday: 2 PM – 7 PM; and on weekends and holidays: 1 PM – 7 PM. By prior arrangement, the Aquarium can be seen every day.

SACRAL HERITAGE – IDRIJA MUNICIPALITYThe St Mary of the Assumption parish church – Marija na Skalci in Spodnja Idrija – The church was mentioned for the first time

in the 12th century. Today it can be seen as designed in the baroque style of the 17th century. The illusionistic paintings of the

interior were done by Jožef Mrak (1762–1766), otherwise known as the constructor of klavže on the Idrijca and Belca rivers.

The St Anthony of Padua church and calvary – The church (1678) and calvary (1766) ensemble on the Rožni hrib over Idrija is a

nice example of the symbiosis between architecture and nature.

The St Trinity church – The oldest church in Idrija. It stands on the place where according to legend Škafar first saw native

mercury in 1490. The late-Gothic ribbed and netted arches of the presbytery dating in 1629 are accompanied with the stained-

glass windows done by the painter Lojze Čemažar.

SACRAL HERITAGE – CERKNO MUNICIPALITYThe baroque style parish church St. Anna in Cerkno dates from 1717 and was built by the local architect Gregor Maček. Two altar paintings and three wooden altars have the most artistic value among the interior equipment.

The church of St. Jost in the village Trebenče, dating from 1595 has well preserved gothic elements despite the 17th century reconstructionsin baroque style. During renovationworks frescoes from the 15th and16th centuries were discovered.

Church of the Birth of Virgin Mary in the village Police represents typical late gothicarchitecture with a baroque-style nave and a bell tower separated from the nave. Frescoes made by Jernej from Loka, and dating from 1536 are the most valuable art pieces in the church.

St. John’s church is located on thebrink of the plateau of Šebrelje. Betweenthe 4th and the 1st centurythere was a Roman military strongholdthere and later it was changed into a Christian church from a previously pagansanctuary.

Among those we must not forget the internationally renowned Idrija Lace Festival. We recommend restaurants that serve typical Idrian dishes such as žlikrofi, zeljševka and smukavc. Our offices will provide you with a selection of postcards, tourist guides, maps and other publications, as well as a line of souvenirs and gifts including lace products. Free internet access. Our services include renting a local tourist guide who will show you around the town and its vicinity. Choose among classic programmes or allow us to prepare one following your wishes.
