Tourism Planning, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

SWA provided tourism planning services focused on

the preservation and enhancement of historically and

culturally significant sites in Saudi Arabia. Redeveloping

the historic district of Hofuf, a 10-thousand-year-old

settlement within the largest oasis in the world, SWA

designed an ecotourism resort inspired by the Bedouin-

tent archetype of ancient Arabian culture. The design

included public open spaces linking and integrating

major elements of the area.

The project also involved refining an istaraha—a

tent campground for large traveling groups—located

in the vast ancient date-palm groves surrounding Hofuf.

While more refined that any istaraha currently available

in Saudi Arabia, the design was also economical,

attractive, and consistent with traditional Saudi culture.

The plans also included a nearby mixed-use tourist

resort, including a large resort hotel, retail development,

and residential district for second homes.
