Big on small town charm, the South Cariboo offers wholesome community events year round sure to appeal to the entire family.

A popular weekly attraction is the award-winning South Cariboo Farmers’ Market, located in the middle of downtown, running every Friday from May to September in front of the 100 Mile Community Hall. It features all kinds of home-grown and handmade local products, as well as fresh baking and hot local food for a quick and wholesome lunch.

The Centennial Park waterfalls are a gem hidden in the centre of 100 Mile House. Located a short walk from the park-ing lot (off Cedar Avenue at Parkside Art Gallery) along a tree-lined nature trail, the waterfalls are easily accessible to everyone.

The World’s Tallest Skis – almost 11 metres in length and weighing over 600 pounds – can easily be spotted at the South Cariboo Visitor Centre on Highway 97.

There is a canopy of blossoming trees lining Birch Avenue early in the season that are soon joined by huge hanging baskets burst-

ing with bright and cheerful flowers all summer long.Fall brings nature’s own striking tint when the

foliage turns and the ruby-red crab apples stand out in relief against bright yellow leaves.

The town’s colourful historic murals beautify the downtown core from one end to the other while hundreds of bright, seasonal-themed flags flap in the breeze. Revitalization projects recently under-taken by the District and gardens and frontages featured by businesses all blend into a harmonious landscape that radiates cheerful small-town charm.

Gardens filled with vivid blooms in a backdrop of flowering shrubs, kale and grasses in muted tones are enhanced by shady trees over new benches on paving stones.

BIRCH AVENUE

Asmall community garden on the corner of Birch Avenue at First Street will soon be complemented with another now being

developed kitty-corner to it.Beautification improvements reach a pinnacle in

front of the 100 Mile Community Hall at Third Street, where they showcase the award-winning South Cariboo Farmers’ Market on Fridays all summer long.

The hugely popular outdoor market offers fresh seasonal produce, crafts, jewelry, home-baking and preserves, soaps and lotions, wool and knit-wear, and much more.

The 14 richly-coloured murals gracing the walls throughout downtown are all hand-painted cre-ations by talented area artists.

Commemorating local heritage and history in a series of unique vignettes, they honour the integrity and strength of dedicated pioneers who built the community in days gone by.

Thanks to the 100 Mile House Mural Society volunteers and supporters, the number of murals continues to grow each year.

In one of the latest murals, area artist Dwayne Davis depicts the late Dan Lytton on the west wall of Cariboo Mall.

This well-known Sheridan Lake rancher and 2005 Cowboy Hall of Fame inductee was seriously injured in a rodeo accident and continued ranching from a wheelchair and ATV.

(The South Cariboo Visitors Centre on Highway 97 has binders with information on these murals.)

It is only a hop, skip and a jump from downtown to Centennial Park, with trails to the falls on Bridge Creek, which also meanders through the green spaces and picnic areas.

Just across the highway, folks can take a low-mobility path around the 100 Mile Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary to see a myriad of birds, often nesting, in their natural habitat.

The host of downtown businesses offer many products and services for home, holiday or busi-ness. While you leisurely stroll along enjoying the South Cariboo sunshine and shopping, be sure to take time to enjoy the scenery, stop for a lunch or a latte, and chat with the friendly people in down-town 100 Mile House.

Whenever you visit the community, drop by the South Cariboo Visitor Centre, pick up a copy of the 100 Mile House Free Press or go to website at www.100milefreepress.net to check out area fea-tures and events.

70 Mile House was initially a roadhouse

built in the days of the Cariboo Gold Rush.

Logging and ranch-ing were the prime economic drivers with some tourism. Now, tourists, full-time and seasonal residents – many retired – with some ranchers and loggers fill the cash registers in the service centre along Highway 97.

70 Mile offers a pub, restaurants and a full-service and modern general store.

Green Lake, 13 kilo-metres east of Highway 97, is a popular fishing spot and aquatic play-ground in summer. (See the Watch/Green Lake information in this guide for details.)

During the winter months, local residents and tourists enjoy ice

fishing, as well as numerous well-main-tained snowmobile and cross-country ski trails.

An interesting area tourist attraction is Painted Chasm – a spectacular bedrock box canyon, 1.5 km

long and 120 metres deep, featuring a bril-liant display of bright orange and pink rock.

Travel south from 70 Mile on Highway 97 for nine km and then turn east on Chasm Road and follow it for three km. There is an infor-mation sign explaining how the chasm was formed and a viewing area.

Another gem is Crater Lake, which located about 25 km east of Highway 97 from 70 Mile House on North Bonaparte Road.

Watch your odom-eter because there is a small pullout for parking on the right-hand side of the road and then there is a half-km walk on an uneven path to

get to the crater. The Rayfield River

tumbles through the basalt and feldspar rock into a spectacular waterfall that plunges into Crater Lake, which has just been turned into a provincial park.

A forested and rocky trail winds along the river and it will take folks to the top of the waterfall.

Another steep and challenging trail takes hikers 45 metres down to the lake shore for a spectacular look up at the waterfalls. People will need good shoes and will have to be rea-sonably fit to make the hike back up from the lake.

Folks will definitely have to use caution along steep edges and uneven trails. Carriage driving is quickly gaining popular-

ity in the South Cariboo and three events are held annually at Ken Huber’s ranch – follow the signs at the junction of 70 Mile House and Highway 97.

ond-hand store) is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• Bingo is held the second and fourth Thursday of every month; games start at 6 p.m.

• Poker tournaments are held on the second Saturday of every month; games start at 6.

Carriage driving• May 14-18 — BS & Drive Weekend features field

driving trials and heritage pleasure driving classes.• July 17-19 – This is the competitive (and

crowd pleasing) Cariboo Trails CDE and Driving Clinic during which spectators see horses (don-keys) and carriage drivers competing against each other, as they manoeuvre around cones, plywood features and a water hole.

• Oct. 2-4 – the final event of the season is the Cariboo Trails Field Driving Trials and the Heritage Pleasure Driving Classes.

Folks will want to bring their cameras. There is a concession on site. For more information contact Ken Huber at 250-456-6050 or [email protected].

Forest Grove is a friendly and welcoming commu-nity full of (pioneering)

history located to the north-east of 100 Mile House on Canim Hendrix Lake Road, 21 kilome-tres from Highway 97.

The first settlers arrived around 1912, making the village the centre of business and social life for sawmill workers and their families.

Business in the village centres at the old Felker store, which has expanded to include a post office, a hardware store and a hair care salon.

The Legion is open from Tuesday to Saturday. It offers cribbage (Thursday evening), pool (Friday evening) and darts – Saturday afternoon, followed by the very popular meat draw.

A general store and gas sta-tion stands at the corner of the T-Junction and the fire hall is close by.

Straight through the intersec-tion, on Eagle Creek Road, is where the school and community complex are located – the latter including the community hall, curling rink, library and a base-ball diamond.

A campground is nestled at the end of the sporting field between trees – information; Wendy Clarke at 250-397-2452 or e-mail [email protected].

Across the road from the school, Shaw Drive leads into Auld Drive, at the end of which the Forest Grove Pioneer Cemetery can be found.

Forest Grove has a variety of service clubs and social groups that welcome visitors.

The Walking Club meets at the fire hall at 11 a.m. every Monday and the 50-Plus Group gathers at the Legion on Wednesday for lunch.

The Legion hosts the annual Redneck Olympics (Aug. 8), which includes games – Toilet Seat Toss, Water Balloon Volleyball and Mud Pie Eating Contest. There will be a bouncy castle for the little ones and a barbeque lunch.

The Legion hosts a garage sale, Oktoberfest, Halloween trick or treat and dinner and dance evenings.

Information: Pam (250-397-0018) or e-mail [email protected].

The Forest Grove ’94 Lions organize the annual Redneck Regatta at Ruth Lake Park (Aug. 9). The regatta has teams building a boat out of recycled materials only, and crews racing around a buoy armed with water guns. Prizes are also awarded for best costume. A lunch is available and there are chil-dren’s games. Information: Cindy Whitehead (250-397-2367) or e-mail [email protected].

Welcome to the Cariboo! For year-round excitement and relaxation, the Cariboo is the best place to spend your leisure time. Summer brings a wide variety of outdoor activities to suit everyone’s desires from horseback riding to canoeing to gol ng. Hundreds of shing lakes provide the habitat for rainbow trout, kokanee and char. Many of our lakes are stocked annually by the Department of Fisheries to ensure your catch. Resorts and Provincial Campsites offer superb accommodations, whether you want a traditional-style western holiday or European-style hospitality. Sporting equipment is readily available at many resorts or local sport shops. The winter season attracts both downhill and cross-country skiing enthusiasts from all over, to take advantage of our mountains and miles of snow-covered trails. Wide open spaces of wilderness and frozen lakes invite snowmobilers to the area each year to participate in outdoor fun. Whatever your pleasure, you will nd the Cariboo to be a place to return to year after year!

Page 18: Tourism Guide - South Cariboo Visitor Guide

Situated on Highway 24 about nine

kilometres east from Highway 97, Lone Butte was once known as the railroad centre for the South Cariboo.

Lone Butte has the last standing water tower (built in the 1920s) on the old PGE railway line.

Water Tower Park offers picnic tables, a restored speeder shed, a children’s play area and public washrooms. It will also be the rest station during Lone Butte Rocks (July 25), and where the Lone Butte Historical Association (LBHA) will

hold it annual garage sale, bake sale and a barbecue.

Lone Butte is also home to a Cold War Fallout Shelter built in the early 1960s. It is a portion of the Alice Singleton Heritage

House, which was originally built in the mid-1940s as a Free Methodist Church, and expanded in 1949 to be the first area Red Cross outpost hospital. In 1960 it became the Lone Butte Post Office for the next 20 years.

The LBHA also owns the Willowford Schoolhouse and main-tains the Lone Butte Pioneer Cemetery. Tours of all of our historical sites can be arranged by calling Al Jones at 250-395-5193.

The annual Lone

Butte Rocks event is on July 25, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., and features local arts and crafts, flea markets, bake sales, barbecue lunches, a petting zoo and entertainment throughout the town – it’s a great fun-filled family event.

The town was named for the butte – a steep-sided volcanic plug – that overlooks the area. Hikers can climb the 250-foot high butte for a panoramic view of the surrounding area.

Irish Lake sits just below the butte and offers a small recre-ational site and good seasonal trout fishing.

Lone Butte offers many amenities, includ-ing a general store, an antique store, a gift and consignment shop and a post office.

The Village of Clinton has a long and inter-esting history that many visitors enjoy when they take the time to look at all of

the heritage buildings that line Highway 97.Once called 47 Mile House, Clinton was an

important stopping place on the Cariboo Gold Rush Trail in the 1800s, and it still boasts evidence of that history.

The community also boasts one of the best historical museums in British Columbia. Housed in the Village’s old brick courthouse, the museum has displays inside the brick building and in the historic barn, which is only a few steps away from the museum’s back door.

Open to the public daily from May to October, it preserves and displays a spectacular collection of the area’s pioneers and First Nations people. It houses artifacts, archival records and historical ref-erence material relating to Clinton and the South Cariboo area.

There are numerous provincial parks within a

short drive of Clinton. These include Downing Park at Kelly Lake, Edge Hills and Marble Range parks, Big Bar Park and Painted Chasm Park.

These are all worth visiting and offer spectacular views and a lot to do on a family vacations – bring your camera and a good pair of walking shoes.

There are also several working and guest ranches in the surrounding area.

Clinton is perfectly located for a home base for outdoor adventures. People can take day trips to the Big Bar-Jesmond area, Cougar Point and High Bar (sites of the 2009 Kelly Creek wildfire). Folks can also travel to Clinton Falls, Beaver Dam Lake, Meadow Lake and Carson Mountain.

Opportunities abound in the Clinton area for fishing, hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, pho-tography, horseback riding, geocaching and more.

Some of the best fishing in the Cariboo is avail-

able just a few kilometres east of 100 Mile House.

There are several service centres (fuel, groceries and other supplies), resorts, ranches, and bed and

breakfasts cater to the traveller’s every need.

Mahood Lake Corridor

Some 33 kilome-tres from 100 Mile House, Horse Lake Road meets Mahood Lake Road, which

stretches 55 km to Mahood Lake.

Near the south end, one finds Deka, Sulphurous and Hathaway lakes, which are stocked annually and provide year-round fishing.

These lakes also provide ample opportunity for canoeing and boating. One

can even portage between Deka, Sulphurous and Hathaway lakes.

In winter, snowmobilers can enjoy a vast network of groomed trails, including up Windy Mountain to its 6,300-foot peak. Snowmobilers must stay out of closure areas that protect the threatened Mountain Caribou population.

Birders will enjoy Mountain Spruce Park, which also harbours rare wild-flowers, trails, a viewing platform and Heron Lake.

Beyond these lakes are Drewry Lake and the spectacular Mahood and Canim Falls, both of which are a short walk off the road.

Wear good footwear and bring your camera.

InterlakesOn Highway 24, also known as the

Fishing Highway, Interlakes is a vast area stretching from east of Lone Butte to Lac des Roches. It includes well-known lakes, such as Fawn, Sheridan and Bridge, and countless smaller but excellent fishing lakes.

There are many miles of trails for walking, horseback riding, hiking, bird-ing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.

The 108 Heritage Site at the 108 Mile Ranch offers folks a trip into years gone-by on the old Cariboo Gold Rush Trail.

The Heritage Site is just off Highway 97 along-side the 108 Mile Ranch and 108 Lake.

Open five to seven days a week from May long weekend (May 18) to Labour Day (Sept. 7), the 108 Heritage Site features century-old buildings, out buildings and historic displays.

Canada Day (July 1), a large annual event fea-tures entertainment, vendors, RCMP in red serge, fire trucks, children’s attractions, food, fun and much more – 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

A rest stop and picnic area allows folks to make the most of their visit, and offers access to moun-tain biking, hiking and cross-country skiing trails.

The 108 Mile Ranch is known for being a four-season playground. It offers hiking, biking, golfing, horseback riding, ice fishing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Two resorts call 108 Mile home – The Hills

Health Ranch, with full spa and recreation facilities, and the 108 Golf Resort with a hotel and cham-pionship 18-hole golf course. There are tennis courts, a campsite, a post office, a regional airport and shopping amenities and restaurants.

the community hall the first and third Thursdays every month at 7 p.m.

• May 31 – Purina Walk for Dog Guides is at Main Beach on 108 Lake. Registration at noon; walk at 1 p.m. Dogs must be on leashes.

• June 13 – 108 Mile Ranch Community Association hosting an open house at the com-munity hall – a showcase for local businesses, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

26… 2015 VISITORS GUIDE TO THE SOUTH CARIBOO

Canim Lake and its surrounds have been a retreat for families for generations.

The picturesque lake is a rare gem, one of the largest of the Cariboo, with sparkling clean waters, abundant fish, and activities for all ages.

Rainbow trout are caught casting from the shore in the evenings, and heavy lake trout are regularly wrestled into the boat from the deeper water.

Day-trippers visit the Canim Beach Provincial Park on the north side of the lake which has a clean child-friendly sheltered beach, a number of picnic tables under the shade of cottonwoods, and a wheelchair-accessible outhouse.Bring your barbecue for cooking.

For longer stays, there are excellent lakeside resorts and B&Bs providing everything from rec-reational vehicle and tent sites to well-furnished housekeeping suites and cabins.

Many have swimming beaches, boat-launching facilities, and some even provide free-of-charge

watercraft for paddling.Public boat launches are on the north side at

Hinterland Road for skiffs, and on the south side for larger craft about four kilometres past the well-stocked Canim Lake General Store.

Canim Lake is a “jumping-off” spot for the small lakes of the backcountry, which offer great rainbow fishing.

Some are stocked and have Forestry Rec Sites for overnight camping.

The Canim River flows out of the lake into Wells Gray Park and down to Mahood Lake.

The 150-metre elevation change yields two stunning waterfalls both accessible by a level, one- kilometre maintained trail suitable for all ages.

The Mahood Lake Campground of Wells Gray Park has an excellent beach, boat launch, picnic area and overnight camping.

Things to do• May 30 – The Canim Lake Community Club’s

great craft, plant and bake sale runs through the morning and early afternoon.

For more information on events in this area, pick up a copy of the 100 Mile House Free Press or go to the Free Press website at www.100milefreepress.net.

28… 2015 VISITORS GUIDE TO THE SOUTH CARIBOO

Lac la Hache is famous for being the longest town in the Cariboo

and home of the largest axe in British Columbia, signifying Lac la Hache as the Lake of the Axe.

Travellers can enjoy the view of Lac la Hache while driving on Highway 97 beside the 19 kilometres of its shoreline. The area has several fishing lodges, guest ranches and resorts that offer great recreational opportu-nities available.

Lac la Hache Provincial Park and its 83 campsites are all nestled in open Douglas-fir and aspen woodlands is 13 km north of town. There’s a boat

launch with a covered and open picnic area on the lakeshore, with a sandy and cordoned off swimming area and a children’s climbing park.

This beautiful lake is popular for water sports, and is espe-cially famous for its kokanee and trophy-sized lake trout, along with ice-fishing and snowmobil-ing in the winter.

Nearby Greeny and Timothy lakes provide optimum fly-fish-ing opportunities even during the warm summer months and camping available. There are numerous smaller fishing holes in the area.

In winter, skiers, s n o w b o a r d e r s and downhill

enthusiasts make their way to the north-facing Mt. Timothy Ski Area, situated just 24 km east of Lac la Hache. Depending on snow conditions, it’s open from

late November to mid-March or early April.

It boasts a scenic chair lift ride up the 1,635-metre long hill. With 35 runs, there is something for every age and ski ability.

Lac la Hache is also a popular Nordic ski des-

tination, with a 200-km cross-country ski trail system.

With its wide-open rangeland spotted with many frozen lakes, winter is also enjoyed by snowmobilers tour-

ing the large network of marked trails that stretch from 70 Mile House to Spout Lake (trail pass-es are required for the groomed trails).

This year marks the 16th Annual Garlic Festival, which celebrates everything to do with garlic, and takes place on Aug. 29-30.

The historic Felker Homestead site, located a few kilometres north of Lac la Hache, is the scene of many activities, music, magic shows and enter-tainment for all ages and, of course, venders selling everything garlic and more.

Be sure to take in the Master Garlic Chef com-petition, which sees chefs cooking their original garlic recipes to see who takes home the first-place money and bragging rights for the year.

Fore more information go to garlicfestival.ca.

Things to do• Lac la Hache community hall hosts a variety of

events, including regular Wednesday night bingo games.

• The A.O.P.O. Pioneer Centre offers seniors activities, including square dancing, crib and gather-ings throughout the week.
