Heating up the summer

The only fire that the Edmond Fire Department found when they arrived at Touchmark were pots of fire-hot chili. Representatives from the department judged the entries of the Hot, Hot, Hot Chili Cook-off. All proceed from the event went to the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Is it a right or a privilege—the right to happiness, that is? Whatever your interpretation of the wording of the Declaration of Independence, it has become a multimillion-dollar business to help us all find our “right to happiness.”

We may have come equipped to pursue our own version of happiness, but North Americans seem to be endowed with the pursuit-of-happiness impulse. Many have the urge to find that greener pasture or nirvana … just over the hillside (or online, for that matter).

What does that mean? It means that the outdated definition of doing more, owning more, conquering the next challenge has become an ambition to “best” our neighbors, whether by straight-out purchase or credit. The snatch-and-grab phenomenon has become a job description for many and an “oh well” for our neighbors.

Interestingly, this is not true of those who live long and well. Studies repeatedly tell us

that philanthropy and a spirit of giving are essential to well-being. While it may not be the barn-raising or neighborhood party in this day and age, the impulse to help others is deeply imbedded. All of the current studies on “happiness” bear out the fact that compassion, concern, and action (in the way of helping hands or physical donations) make a difference in the quality of life we all seek.

So, pass up the infomercials and appeals you get in your mailbox to “feel good about yourself” with this tape or class. Release even an ongoing commitment to “feel good.” Instead, contact the Full Life wellness team at Touchmark at Coffee Creek to get involved in programs and services that do make a difference.

Above: Matt Reed, Adrienne Parker and Poppy Hock display authentic artifacts that will soon be on display in the American Indian Collection of the Oklahoma Museum of History.

A while back, resident Adrienne Parker was given a gift of old American Indian artifacts. Curious if they were genuine or commercial copies that could be bought at any tourist shop, she searched for someone who could tell her the facts. Adrienne found Matt Reed, curator of the American Indian Collection of the Oklahoma Museum of History, and asked him over for a visit.

“I left messages at many museums, and on June 3, I received a call from Matt Reed, who is an authority on all the tribes in Oklahoma as well as many others in the United States. He offered to come to Touchmark to examine my artifacts.”

Matt Reed is a tall man, who wears his hair braided to his waist. He was once one of the five chiefs of the Pawnee Nation and is recognized throughout the United States as an American Indian historian. Adrienne started off the visit by showing Matt the artifacts she had been given by resident Poppy Hock.

“He could tell at first glance they were authentic,” says Adrienne. “Matt was thrilled to be in the presence of two stickball clubs used for sporting events by the Seminole Indians.” Many modern tribes still play that game.

There was also a war club of the Cheyenne Tribe made out of buffalo horns with an intricately carved leather handle, authentic beadwork, and feather work. They also discussed artifacts from the Navajo and Zuni Nations in Arizona and New Mexico. Adrienne showed Matt the study guide of Navajo weaving, silversmithing, and sandpainting that she had written for Montclair College in New Jersey, which is now in its library. After the exciting morning of viewing Adrienne’s treasures, the discussion continued over lunch.

Adrienne shares that, “One of the best things that came out of the visit is that Poppy (widow of Rev. Joe Hock) and I have decided to donate our artifacts to the museum so that other Oklahomans may enjoy them. A brass plaque stating that they were donated by Rev. and Mrs. Joe Hock and Dr. and Mrs. Norman Parker of Touchmark will be displayed.”
