Offering: new construction, high quality cabinetry, crown molding, granite counter tops, covered patios.

Lee Disbrow is someone who enjoys friendships and embraces opportunities to be active. Last month, she participated in many of the activities during Active Aging Week.

Throughout the year, Lee takes advantage of a full range of Touchmark activities, such as Bunko, exercise classes, and social gatherings. As one who appreciates a talented performer and likes to keep learning, she also attends concerts and informative lectures.

“Plus, I recently learned a new game, Sequence,” says Lee. “We started with just four of us, and now there are close to 12!

“I love it here. The friendliness of the people is outstanding, and I have many, many good friends and do a variety of activities. There is never a need to fill time. We can pick and choose the activities and do what we want.”

Lee remembers the transition to her new home—new surroundings, new routines, and new people. She welcomed the opportunity to make new friends, and now helps her neighbors to do the same.

“I am on the friendship committee and enjoy that I get to meet all of the new people who come to live here. We try very hard to offer a friendly face so everyone can feel like this is home,” she says.

Lee jokes that she has written a great “Chamber of Commerce speech” about her home at Touchmark.

“It’s the way I feel. I could not have found a place I love any more than this. I try to stay active in all that’s offered and keep myself busy,” she says.

“I just knew this was the place for me. There is activity and friendliness!”

TOUCHMARK AT COFFEE CREEK

Mary is the new Life Enrichment/Wellness coordinator for Touchmark’s Prairieview Memory Care Residences.

She recently moved with her family to Edmond from Columbus, Ohio.

Originally from Detroit, Mary and her nine siblings and parents moved to Plano, Texas, after her father retired.

“I have fond memories of spending summers in a small cottage by Lake Huron with the family,” says Mary.

Following high school, Mary attended Stephen F. Austin University.

“It was there that I remember my first volunteer job with older adults,” says Mary.

Throughout her career and while raising her family, Mary has gravitated toward working with older adults. She has volunteered at nursing homes, visited homebound seniors, and accumulated six-plus years professional experience working with seniors.

“I believe I finally found my calling as part of the Touchmark family, helping residents by providing them with daily activity choices, companionship, compassion, and an overall sense of friendship,” says Mary. “I feel as if I now have two families; those I go home to and those I work with!”

In her free time, Mary enjoys spending time with her family, reading, gardening, hanging with Bob and Ed (her two dogs), walking, and for the time being, dreaming about traveling.

BRAIN BUILDERS

Tongue twisters require concentration and challenge pronunciation skills. For an added challenge, try memorizing and saying the twister out loud.

Betty Botter had some butter. “But,” she said, “this butter’s bitter.”

If I bake this bitter butter, it would make my batter bitter.

But a bit of better butter—that would make my batter better.

So she bought a bit of butter, better than her bitter butter,

and she baked it in her batter, and the batter was not bitter.

So ‘twas better Betty Botter bought a bit of better butter.

I live, because I’m happy “I sing because I’m happy …” – Ci vilia Durfee Martin

Last month, this column focused on the happiness research, which is a bit startling and constantly changing. This month, the focus is on what works to make people feel empowered, engaged, and free from as many health/mental/environmental constraints as possible.

Aging brings its own complications—less muscle, reduced energy quotient,

elevated (or lowered) blood pressure, financial worries about resources to care for one self and/or spouse for as long as needed, loss of friends and family. The data, though, show that many people are living long and well—even into their 100s. How can that be?

Interestingly, the simple answer is “thankfulness.” We focus a lot on the word thankful during this season. One can be thankful in private, but that is only part of the formula for a good quality of life. Thankfulness accelerated by good works and generosity is the key component to the wellness prescription.

Even individuals who are physically impaired or cognitively challenged set themselves apart by being part of the solution to the unmet needs of others. The expanded vision of others

and good works can empower people who cannot volunteer in traditional ways.

Touchmark believes in philanthropy. The Touchmark Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity formed by Touchmark in 2002. Its mission is “to enhance the well-being of seniors.” The foundation is dedicated to providing programs to help ensure that seniors have what is necessary to make their lives comfortable, satisfying, and engaging. At this time of year, food boxes are given out at each Touchmark community to help families in need.

Thank you for caring and sharing.
