TOUCHMARK AT COFFEE CREEK

This past spring, Brenda McDonald joined Touchmark as a retirement counselor.

“The position had opened up, and I felt like that might be a great next step,” says Brenda, who had just retired from 31 years in education in June and began her job at Touchmark two days later. “I decided it was again time to make a career change. Now I’m educating people about the Full Life at Touchmark!”

Born and raised in Durant, Okla., Brenda graduated from Durant High School and attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where she pursued degrees in Business Education and Elementary Education. She later finished with a Master of Education in Administration. During this time, Brenda married Kenny McDonald, and they had two sons, Kyle and Kasey.

Brenda has taught a variety of school levels, including second, seventh, eighth, and high school. She also served as a cheerleading sponsor.

In 1996, the family moved to Edmond, where Brenda got a job teaching fourth grade at Charles Haskell Elementary in Edmond. She later served as the assistant principal at Cross Timbers in Edmond, and five years later as the principal at Ida Freeman Elementary in Edmond.

In her free time, Brenda and her husband enjoy riding four-wheelers in the mountains during the fall, riding jet skis at the lake in the summer, and spending time with their family. Her younger son Kasey lives in Edmond, while her eldest lives in Colorado with his wife and 2-year-old. The couple is expecting another baby next year. Brenda loves visiting them and getting to play “Mimi!”

Celebrating the possibilities

“‘Why not’ is a slogan for an interesting life.” – Mason Cooley, professor and aphorist

Year’s end brings a time for reflection and shared memories. All of the holidays and holy days for people of faith have celebratory events and traditions. Often the gifts of the spirit, friendships, family relationships, victories, and losses are remembered.

As 2014 approaches, many ponder, “What’s next?” Perhaps the better question is, “Why not?” Things on the bucket list might be due for a move to the action list.

Healthy aging means nurturing curiosity, passion, and imagination. Lifelong learning, community service, volunteerism, adventures, and new beginnings are characteristics of Touchmark champions.

To learn more about champions and share your individual talents, strengths, and skills, contact a member of the Full Life team. Continuing to grow and succeed in self-determined goals is the essence of active aging.
