Step 1: Gather and Analyze Initial Data

• 27 Different Sheets were sourced

• In stores

• Online

• Sheets are prepped and tested with the Toccare

• Sheets tested in 2-directions (0 and 90 degrees, aligned with edge of sheet)

• Some sheets feel the same in both directions, others do not

• Initial data prepared in standard report and analyzed

• Generally, materials provided should aim to resolve a certain problem. SynTouch can work with you to determine how best to address your specific needs!

Data collected on 1 of the 15 dimensions for 27x2 = 54 samples. Microtexture coarseness measures the spacing of fine textures on a surface -> important for sheets.

Step 2: Condense the Data

• For sheets that feel different in different directions

• Both directions contribute to the overall feel of the sheets

• Humans tend to combine this data subconsciously when they are feeling materials.

• In order to obtain repeatable and quantifiable data, we do testing in one direction at a time.

• We can combine the data from the 2 different tests into one cohesive set of data about the sheets (i.e. go from 15 dimensions computed per direction to 30 total dimensions per sheet)

• It is important to line up the data for the sheets such that we’re comparing the same directions of testing to each other

• Woven sheets will have a rougher and a less rough direction. To best match up the sheets to how humans perceive them, we lined up all of them so that the rougher dimensions were compared to one another.

How might people differentiate bedsheets?


Step 3: Determine Relevant Dimensions

• When comparing how things feel, most individuals hone in on a few, relevant differences. We aim to do the same:

• When objects feel wildly different, there are more generalized differences (i.e. textured vs. not textured, sticky vs. slippery, etc.)

• When more similar objects are being compared, the differences become more focused. SynTouch tries to focus in on dimensions in the same way that humans do.

• Large differences in sheets may come from thickness or warmth.

• More subtle differences in sheets will be come from varying microtextures and frictions.


Thickness

Most woven sheets are of a very similar thickness (cotton, microfibers, silk, etc.). There are some distinctly thicker sheets (flannel, fleece, wool) where thickness may be one of the defining characteristics.

What makes expensive sheets feel different from inexpensive ones?


Microtextures

• In woven materials, the microtextures (measurements of repeated patterns <1mm in size/spacing) often indicate how finely woven a material is.

• Not a primary factor in differentiating between types of materials used in sheets.

• Can be used to differentiate quality within a single class of materials.

Microtextures: Focus on Cottons

The plot on the right displays the coarseness (spacing of features) of all of the cotton sheets tested, in their more coarse directions. These samples are ordered from least expensive to most expensive, with items at low, medium and high price points each identified. One of the key features of the more expensive cotton sheets is a lower value for both microtexture coarseness (spacing) and roughness (feature height), which both likely indicate a finer weave.

Similarity Matrices

• The similarity matrix is the best overall summary of how things feel.

• Combines similarities and differences between surfaces in all 15 dimensions to determine a final “similarity score”.

• A value of 0 indicates that the two surfaces are completely different and that the Toccare will never report that they feel the same.

• A value of 1 indicates that the two surfaces feel so similarly that the Toccare was unable to discriminate between them.

• A score in between 0 and 1 indicates that while there were some similarities between the surfaces, there were some differences as well. The Toccare will pick up on the differences but may not be able to differentiate with absolute certainty.

Step 4: Convert the Data

• The Toccare is better than humans at perceiving differences in how materials feel

• Initial similarity numbers represent how similar surfaces feel to the Toccare. We want to convert to numbers demonstrating how similarly materials will feel to human perception:

• Determine how sensitive humans are to differences in the different dimensions (applied specifically to sheets)

• Modify calculations to account for human sensitivities

• Apply the calculations and present metrics for how similar the sheets feel


Human Discriminability of Sheets

• The following matrix demonstrates an estimate of the discriminability of sheets by humans.

• The sheets have been organized by material types.

• Humans have a much more difficult time detecting very small variations in how things feel, as demonstrated in the graphic.
