The Book Fair is Coming!
Our final book fair of the school year will begin on Wednesday May 8th and finish on Monday May 13th at 11:30. The book fair will be open until 4pm on May 8th, 9th and 10th. Students will visit the book fair with their class on Wednesday May 8th. Students will have an opportunity to make purchases during the school day or can visit the book fair after school with an adult. A book fair flyer will be sent home that provides a preview of only a few of the many books that will be available at our book fair. The flyer also contains a special draw ballot. Students should return this ballot to the fair for a chance to win $25 worth of books for their family, plus $25 worth of books for their classroom! Your support of the book fair is a key part of helping us obtain new books and resources for our library. We look forward
to seeing you at the book fair and thank you, in advance, for supporting this great literacy event.
Spirit Day
The school leadership team encourages all students
to show their school spirit by coming to school with
wacky hair on May 27th. What will you do to make
your hair crazy? Colour it? Spike it? Put it in braids?
We can’t wait to see everyone’s wacky hair!
Join us for our Character Assembly on
Monday May 27th at 9:45am.

Sunday May 12th is Mother’s Day and on behalf of the Tottenham Public School staff, I hope that all of the moth-ers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers in our community have a love filled day. I am hopeful that our students will express their love and appreciation for all that you do to support them and your family. We invite all Grandparents of our students to an afternoon Tea on Friday May 10th, from 2-3:00 p.m. in the gym. Please join us for some student performances and an opportunity to tour our school with your grandchild. We look forward to expressing our appreciation! Our Book Fair began on May 8th and there will be an opportunity for visiting Grandparents to go to the Book Fair with their grandchildren.

In a recent visit, Superintendent Halliday commented on the engagement of our students in their learning and the positive tone and culture at TPS! I appreciate the caring and commitment of our TPS Staff!

What will your kids be doing this summer to stay active? Helping our kids lead healthy, active lifestyles can sometimes be challenging for families – especially during the summer months when kids may not benefit from programs they participate in during the school year. Summer programs offer children and youth a host of benefits including staying physically active, making new friends and giving kids a sense of belonging and confidence. Here are some ideas on how to keep your kids’ minds and bodies active this summer:
Summer camp - We know that when children are connected to their environment, they are healthier and happier. Summer camp provides kids with the opportunity to “unplug” from technology and enjoy the great outdoors!
Summer kids club – When your child is too young to take part in summer camp, the YMCA Summer Kids Club is the perfect opportunity for children ages 4 to 6 to engage in interactive indoor and outdoor experiences all summer long. It’s the perfect setting for kids who want to embark on thrilling adventures while staying close to home.
Swimming lessons – Swimming is a summer time favourite. Consider signing your child up for swimming lessons, giving them the confidence they need to be safe in and around the water.
Aquatic leadership programs – For older youth, the summer is the perfect time to enrol in aquatic leadership
programs such as Bronze Medallion or National Lifeguard training.

Stay safe in the sun
It only takes one bad sunburn in childhood to increase the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. As the weather gets warmer, follow these sun safety tips to keep you and your family safe:
use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher and SPF 15 lip balm
apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes before going outside (even on cloudy days) and always follow the label instructions
apply sunscreen to any exposed areas of skin – nose, ears, back of neck, tops of feet, etc.
reapply sunscreen every 2-3 hours and after sweating or swimming
wear loose, long sleeved shirts and pants, a large-brimmed hat and sunglasses
if possible, avoid being in the sun between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. when you’re outside, look for shade For more sun safety tips, visit www.simcoemuskokahealth.org or call Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 to speak with a public health nurse.

Children Learn What They Live
(by Dorothy Law Nolte)
If a child lives with criticism,
He learns to condemn.
If a child lives with hostility,
He learns to fight.
If a child lives with ridicule,
He learns to feel guilty.
If a child lives with tolerance,
He learns to be patient.
If a child lives with encourage-
ment,
He learns confidence.
If a child lives with praise,
He learns to appreciate.
If a child lives with fairness,
He learns justice.
If a child lives with security,
He learns to have faith.
If a child lives with approval,
He learns to like himself
If a child live with acceptance and friend
He learns to find love in the world.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mother’s & Grandmothers in our
TPS Community!
Sincerely,
(Mrs.) Susan Nixon
