3D PrintersJust another technological development?
Like all tools and materials, it has to be experimented with, studied, and then incorporated meaningfully into
subject areas – it is not meant to replace existing practice but to complement the work being done.
Adding it to the Curriculum?
The marriage of Art and Science is a given, but how do we incorporate this relatively nascent
technology in to our other subject areas?
What is Required?3D Printer - Makerbot
Filament - variety of colours and materials

The Excitement! The fun of 3D printing is seeing a fully rendered, manufactured product.
We take part in the actual design and creativity of engineering and then! manufacture the idea into a physical thing.
It is highly addictive to design and print things, and when you find out that other people have designed things you want,
you’ll be even more active in the 3D community!
Low-Poly Prints
Useful ItemsWe all have the potential to create and fabricate tools.
Seriously? You made that?
“In Dreams” (Lord of the Rings Theme)3D Printed Disc for 1971's Fisher Price record player.
The Frustration❏ The frustration occurs when you can’t get a design to work - the measurements
are off
❏ The machine may act up or “hiccup” during a design - hours out the window
❏ The filament interrupts the print. Or you prefer two or more colours and your printer is mono-colour. Or you realize that you need a better performing filament, but, the cost….
The Wonder!During the initial design phase, everything is possible, nothing limits you,
and the expectation of the print keeps you engaged.
Once you’ve gone through the arduous journey to refine, refine, refine and are ready to print, the anticipation of seeing your product makes the effort worth it!
So… how do I access a machine?
TCDSB has printers for use, just sign up through the 21C Department.
Use of the machine is free, the cost to you is the spools of filament.

is open!More on the way!
Thank you!
