THE PRINTER'S TERMS
Type foundaries in england began in 1476 with the introduction of the printing press by William Caslon. From here London became a major centre for the industry particulary in victorian times when education became available to the new school boards. In Birmingham John Baskerville designed a transitional serif typeface called baskerville. Basker-ville designed type that was based on the style of engravers rather than based upon handwriting, his transitional style bridged the gap between the classic ro-man and modern roman typefaces The intention of the typeface was to improve upon the types of William Caslon. The contrast between thick and thin strokes was increased, making the serifs sharper and the curved strokes more circular in shape. In 1958 baskerville was appoint-ed printer to the cambridge University press. It was here that he published a folio bible using his own typeface paper and ink. He was much admired abroad by Benjamin Franklin and Bodoni.

VUTMLIG
Giambattista Bodoni was an Italian typographer, type-designer, compositor, printer and publisher in Parma. He came from a printmaking background, his father and grandfather both being in that trade. He was interested with the modelled types of John baskerville and he and Firmin Didot evovled a type style called new face. The way the letters are cut produces a strong contrast between the thick and thin parts of their body.

Holland has more type designers per capita than any other country in the world which is suprising as there isnt one surviving Dutch type foundary. Dutch type design is said to have vertical ovals as there basic shapes, narrow compared with french design. Other characteristics of dutch type is the clarity, openess and high contrast. The structure is always vis-ible in the dutch designers workThe structure is always clearly visible in the work of Dutch designers as they are concerned with the basic shape.
