Design for Infrastructure Service life

A product's service life is its

expected lifetime, or the

acceptable period of use in service

Page 7: Topic 4 Total Quality Management Concept in Infrastructure Session 08-09

Design for Infrastructure Service life

Service life is different from a predicted life, or MTTF/MTBF (Mean Time to Failure/Mean Time Between Failures)/MFOP(Maintenance-free operating period).

Predicted life is useful such that a manufacturer may estimate, by hypothetical modeling and calculation, a general rule for which it will honor warranty claims, or planning for mission fulfillment.

Page 8: Topic 4 Total Quality Management Concept in Infrastructure Session 08-09

Design for Infrastructure Service life

The difference between service life and predicted life is most clear when considering mission time and reliability in comparison to MTBF and service life.

Maintenance & Rehabilitation Strategies

Strategies involved systematic identification

of available options, include :1. Do crisis maintenance only

2. Maintain the worst facilities first3. Perform opportunistic maintenance

when related work is scheduled4. Use pre-specified maintenance cycle

Page 15: Topic 4 Total Quality Management Concept in Infrastructure Session 08-09

Maintenance & Rehabilitation Strategies

Strategies involved systematic identification of available options, include :5. Repair those components with the

highest risk of failure6. Use preventive maintenance7. Reduce the demand for wear and tear on

the facility8. Compare the economic advantages of

maintenance strategies

Maintenance & Rehabilitation Strategies

• Total Quality Management ( TQM ) ::

is a management philosophy

that seeks to integrate all

organizational functions to focus on meeting customer needs and organizational objective

Page 17: Topic 4 Total Quality Management Concept in Infrastructure Session 08-09

Maintenance & Rehabilitation Strategies

• Quality Assurance ( QA ) ::

all planed actions necessary to provide adequate confidence that a product or service will satisfy given requirements for quality

Page 18: Topic 4 Total Quality Management Concept in Infrastructure Session 08-09

Maintenance & Rehabilitation Strategies

• Quality Assurance ( QA ) ::

Scope ::• What do we want? ( planning and design )• How do we order it ? ( construction plan and

specifications )• Did we get what we ordered ? ( inspection,

sampling, and testing )• What if we don’t get what was ordered? ( reject,

penalty, marginal )• What if we get better than ordered ? ( Bonus? )

Page 19: Topic 4 Total Quality Management Concept in Infrastructure Session 08-09

Maintenance & Rehabilitation Strategies

• Quality Control ( QC ) ::

stands for operational techniques and activities aimed both at monitoring a process and at eliminating causes of unsatisfactory performance

Page 20: Topic 4 Total Quality Management Concept in Infrastructure Session 08-09

Maintenance & Rehabilitation Strategies

Quality Control ( QC ) :: Scope ::

• QC is method used to ensure the product / work will be accepted

• Contractors or suppliers impose a QC system of inspection and sampling and testing on themselves

• Without QC , a contractor or supplier doesn’t know whether a proper level of quality being achieved

• QC may not be specified by the agency , but is essential

Dealing for another alternatives

For many years, civil engineering has dealt

with group of standard materials, including conventional steel, Portland Cement, Asphalt concrete, brick and pipe, glass, wood, and naturally occurring aggregates.

in the last century, a variety of new materials have been tried in various civil engineering project.

Dealing for another alternatives

New Material usage :1.CRCP Pavement ( continuously reinforced

concrete pavement ) 1950-Texas2. Corten Steel for building construction- 19703. Chemcrete asphalt concrete mixes -late 1970s4. Polymer applications in construction ( polymers,

cast polymer product, Polymer modified asphalt)5. Fiber Reinforced Plastics ( FRP )

Dealing for another alternatives

New Material usage :6. Geosynthetics materials - 1960

Dealing for another alternatives

1. Handling and diminishing resources2. Environmental Impact3. Energy related issue4. New Methods and material for infrastructure use5. Dealing with shrinking natural aggregate

resources6. Evaluating materials ( waste and reclaimed

materials )
