TopcladHeavy Duty Corrosion ResistantGlass Reinforced Roofing and Cladding System

IntroductionIn some highly corrosive industrial sitesand areas of high salt contamination,high build paint coatings on roofingand cladding substrates such asaluminium and steel may not performas expected. To meet this need, AlsyniteNZ Ltd has developed a unique heavyduty roofing and cladding materialutilising advanced GRP technology toformulate a corrosive resistant claddingsystem for use as an innovativereplacement for traditional materials.

Key Benefits• The weather surface coatings of

Topclad are designed specifically towithstand corrosive atmospheresand are supplied as “Maxiguard”200 micron** gel coat or incor-porating a Du Pont Tedlar®* coating.Both products offer very goodprotection in corrosive environments,however to obtain the most effectiveprotection, Du Pont Tedlar®* or“Maxiguard” 200 micron** gel coatincorporating a vinyl ester resinsystem should be used;

• In developing Topclad, Alsynite NZLtd determined that whilst corrosiveresistant materials were available,most focussed on the exterior of theroof and cladding material only,when in a large number ofsituations, corrosion to the undersideof the roofing gave the most

concern. Where corrosion is ofconcern to the underside of theroofing, the application of Du PontTedlar®* with a Clear or Shell Whitecolour coating can be applied to theunderside of the product;

• Available as Du Pont Tedlar®* ShellWhite and coloured gel coat finishessubject to colour availability andminimum quantity order;

Topglass TrafficTrafficable GRP Translucent Roofing

IntroductionTo comply with the requirements ofAS/NZS 1562:3.1996 Part 3 Plastic, alltranslucent roofing products must havesafety mesh installed under thesheeting unless specifically designatedas being of trafficable grade. Detailsincluding any allowable variations arepromulgated in the Alsynite TechnicalCatalogue. Test information to meetthe requirements of trafficable gradeis covered in AS/NZS 4040:4.1996Sand Impact Test.

Alsynite recognises that specifiers maywish to dispense with the use of safetymesh while still providing safer workareas for roof traffic. Topglass Traffic,which doubles as a heavy dutycorrosive resistant natural light orcoloured roofing and cladding product,has been developed specifically to meetthese requirements.

Key Benefits• Topglass Traffic is manufactured

utilising a purpose-designed heavyduty polyester UV-stabilised resinsystem, coupled with a glass fibrematrix to form an extremely strongproduct with a tensile strength ofgreater than 130MPa;

• The product is formulated andmanufactured on a computerisedcontinuous production line using aunique process to ensure thorough“wet out” of the glass core,ultimately achieving maximumbonding and strength;

• Non-delaminating surfacetechnology offers many years ofeffective use, with the productresisting the harshest of corrosiveenvironments and weatherdegradation;

• Extremely durable, heavy duty GRProofing product;

• High impact resistance;

• Resistant against corrosion andsurface deterioration;

• Superior 25 year warranty.

Applications• Corrosive environments where the

installation of safety mesh is notrequired;

• Where safety is paramount, and adanger exists that a workman mayfall through sky lighting;

• Heavy duty natural light or colouredroofing and cladding product foruse in corrosive environments.

SpecificationThe translucent roofing shall beTopglass Traffic heavy duty glassreinforced polyester sheeting asmanufactured by Alsynite NZ Ltd tocomply with AS/NZS 4256:3.1994.

The sheeting shall be manufacturedto conform with the nominated roofingand cladding profile at a thickness andstrength meeting the test requirementsof AS/NZS 4040.4.1996 and AS/NZS1562.3.1996. Installation shall becarried out strictly in accordance withAlsynite Installation Instructions.

Weight/Thickness of SheetingTypically, commercial roofing profilesneed a weight of 3660g/m2 (2.5mm)to meet the test requirements ofAS/NZS 4040.4.1996. Theoretically, alighter weight product may meet thesand bag test requirement at a givenpurlin spacing, however considerationmust be given to the actualperformance of the sheet includingweakening or other damage whichcould be expected over the life of thesheet when installed on the buildingover a considerable period of time.

Other weights up to 4880g/m2(3.06mm) are available subject tominimum order.

Light TransmissionDue to the thickness of the product,natural light transmission throughTopglass Traffic will be reduced incomparison to standard weightsheeting, and accordingly thepercentage of roof lighting may needto be increased to meet ideal designrequirements. Contact Alsynite NZ Ltdfor further details.

ColoursTopglass Traffic is available in standardcolours of Clear, White Tint, Opalescentand Woolstore. Solid colours areavailable on request to suit specificdesign applications. Consult AlsyniteNZ Ltd as minimum quantities apply.

Operating TemperatureThe operating temperature range ofTopglass Traffic is -20°C to +95°C.

Rotary Turbine VentilatorsA Breath of Fresh Air

Factories, warehouses, workshops, houses and even communitybuildings are frequently constructed without an efficient naturalventilation system for the benefit of occupants.

Should the interior become hot or stale, doors and windowscan be opened, however stale and hot air will not disperse byitself. As a result the opening of doors and windows is simplynot sufficient to provide ventilation in most buildings.

Unlike doors, windows and static ventilation, Rotary ventilatorsdraw air upwards creating a convection current and in theprocess they extract stale air, together with air which has becomehot as the result of the building’s exposure to long hours ofsunlight. Heat from manufacturing equipment within the buildingis also extracted by these efficient ventilators. As the stale andhot air is extracted it is replaced by fresh air at ambient

temperature entering through doorways and openings thuscompleting the convection cycle current and improving theinternal environment.

Needless to say, fresh air makes people feel more alive and vitalwhilst stale air causes people to feel lethargic and disinterested.On hot days the movement of air over the body causesevaporation to occur which is the natural way to cool downand helps prevent moderate heat stress.

Alsynite Turbine Ventilators also help prevent condensation byextracting condensation-forming air, and in case of fire willextract smoke and fumes, preventing the building from becomingsmoke filled and assisting the occupants to escape to safety.

Ventilation is the natural partner to Alsynite roof sheeting.

Installation Instructions

Product Handling and StorageInstructions for All Products• Store sheeting in a dry location and

protect from possible wind damageprior to installation.

• Sheeting should not be draggedacross objects or other products asit may affect the performance andaesthetics of the roof sheet.

• Care should be taken when loadingthe translucent roofing onto the roofto avoid bending or distortion ofthe sheet.

• Sheeting that becomes wet inbundles and is required to be storedshould be separated and dried priorto storage.

Recommended Installation Guidelines• Sheeting may be cut using an abrasive

disc or fine tooth saw (use protectiongloves and approved face mask).

• To meet the requirements ofAS/NZS 1562:3.1996, safety meshmust be installed under alltranslucent roofing. AlternativelyAlsynite Topglass Traffic heavy dutytrafficable product can be used.Refer to Figure 1.

• A barrier strip must be installedbetween the translucent roofsheeting and the safety mesh at thepurlin line. Refer to Figure 1.

• Ensure the purlins are correctlyspaced and that they are in line.

• GRP fibreglass roofing should alwaysbe installed over the main roofcladding at both lapping edges.

• Ensure the weight/thickness of thesheet combined with the selectedroofing profile will meet thespanning requirements as definedin the Load Span graph displayed inthis brochure.

• Ensure that the correct weatheringsurface of the sheeting is uppermostas the durability and any warrantyis dependent on placing the sheetthe correct side up.

• Where spans exceed data displayedin the Load Span graph, mid spansupports should be installed atappropriate intervals. They should beof a length to allow them to extenda minimum of 0.400mm under theadjacent metal roofing sheets. Midspan supports are not designed tosupport foot traffic. Mid spansupports shall not be used wheremore than two translucent roofsheets are to be laid side by side.

Stop EndsInstall stop ends to the top of thetranslucent sheeting as follows.

Method 1

Roof pitch is 3 degrees to 15 degrees.

Use a right-angled folded flashing tothe full height of the corrugation orrib, fixed with rivets and sealant.

• Severe conditions: Use 0.9mmaluminium.

• Moderate conditions: Use pre-painted metal.

Note: This can also be used in anexposed site or high or very high windzone for steeper pitched roofs.

Method 2

Roof pitch is above 15 degrees.

Use Alsynite approved closed cellprofiled foam strip fitted close to thescrew fixing points.

Sealants• The use of silicone should be

restricted to end laps only as whenset the sealant restricts the ability ofthe sheet to expand and contract.Where side laps are required to besealed, consideration should begiven to the use of one side self-adhesive closed cell lap seal tape.
