6 FEBRUARY – 1 MARCHA Sister Cities cultural exchange project between photographers from Cairns, QLD and Scottsdale, Arizona (USA) – and their pictorial journey together.

In a comforting, elegantly powerful way, these images remind us of our beginnings and ends in the natural world and, hauntingly, of something more eternal.

during her residency at tanks arts Centre and Cairns botanic Gardens in January, Frances was very excited to

be working with tropical plants in a new climate and artistic and cultural environment. Her February exhibition, Fluttergrams, will feature enlarged photograms of wispy leaf forms from her hometown of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan - alongside new leaf work from her Cairns residency.

Cairns Photographic Society (CPS) photographers, alex Pirez and tim Warnock teamed up with Scottsdale’s bob rink and Jim Marshall who are associates of Through Each Other’s Eyes (teoe) a group of photographers well-seasoned by cultural exchanges.

this exhibit builds on teoe’s and CPS’s

philosophy of promoting international understanding and friendship through the art of photography and education. the journey started in late March, 2014 with the Cactus leg of the trip through arizona, and then followed on to Cairns in September for the Coral leg, highlighting the reef, rainforest, Cairns Festival and Cairns amateurs Carnival.

as winner of the 2014 Energy Exhibition Tanks Curator’s Award and selected by Creative Generations to exhibit at GoMA, Jesse thiele is an artist to watch. His inventive and meticulously rendered images on found objects are drawn from his memories of a childhood growing up in Cairns.

“The term nostalgia is a psychological phenomenon we all can relate to but have a hard time to define. Some claim it is a psychiatric disease giving melancholic emotions to a memory you would consider a happy one, while others state it enforces positivity…”

13 FEBRUARY – 1 MARCHThe exciting time between leaving school and starting uni is also a period of deep reflection, as explored here in the artist’s first solo exhibition.

the Painted Ladies are singer-songwriter Luke Peacock, passionate

performers (& Cairns’ own) the Medics, and a range of guest artists for a special musical collaboration. a brand new version of the album will be accompanied by a documentary, as well as a gritty, powerful live music experience.

BLUESFEST & TANKS ARTS CENTRE PRESENTS

MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD (USA)

sAt 11 & sUn 12 APRIL When Franti calls out ‘how ya feelin?’ to the audience - you know magic is about to happen, with a spiritual release that is palpable!

AUGIE MARCH

FRIDAY 1 MAY After a half decade hiatus, one of the nation’s most respected indie-rock acts returns to Tanks, with an expanded line-up and new album, Haven’s Dumb.

ROOts InDIE ROCK

one of the most positive and conscious artists in music today, Michael Franti (singer, songwriter, guitarist and philanthropist) and his band Spearhead know all about the power of music, having earned a reputation for the intense communal spirit they create with their extraordinary live shows.

“A Michael Franti & Spearhead concert is spiritual - it’s physical - it’s about life and loving life - it’s such a wonderful experience. We welcome them back for the second time in 2 years simply because you can’t get enough of the best!” – Peter noble, bluesfest director.

regularly touted as one of australia’s ‘greatest’ or ‘finest’ bands; with albums and songs on the ‘best ever’ lists - their music is impossible to categorise as they have traditional elements at times, then get wildly avant garde at others.

they are that rarest of bands that have enjoyed both critical and commercial success - at times their songs have been on almost every radio format in the country - with gold

and platinum albums to their credit, yet they remain perennial outsiders.

In 2009, after a period of commercial success, the band - for a variety of reasons - ceased enjoying being augie March, and decided to take an indefinite break. that break ended up lasting five years. now they’re back with an exciting new album that’s garnering great reviews, and that will be cherished by those who have kept faith with this rare outfit.COst: $62 (no ConC) (15+) DOORs / BAR: 6.00PM
