Tell me about yourself?
This is probably the most asked
question in marketing interview. It
breaks the ice and gets you to talk
about something you should be fairly
comfortable with. Have something
prepared that doesn't sound rehearsed.
It's not about you telling your life story
and quite frankly, the interviewer just
isn't interested. Unless asked to do so,
stick to your education, career and
current situation. Work through it
chronologically from the furthest back
to the present.

Tell me about a marketing project that you brought in on time and under budget?
Focus on your planning and organising
skills to get the best return on the
marketing budget. Detail what controls
were put in place to track and stay on
top of expenditure and how plans were
adjusted when necessary. Discuss your
ability to react quickly and accurately to
meet new demands and constraints.

What characteristics do you have which will help you excel in this job?
Marketing is all about communication,
about understanding customers needs and
how to fulfil them. You will need to
show that you have the technical
understanding of how marketing
campaigns work but also the personal
skills essential to deliver such campaigns
successfully. For example, excellent
teamwork, leadership, communication
skills, determination, able to use your
initiative and enthusiasm are just some
potential characteristics. Don’t just list
these in your answer but mention 3 -4
and for each give an example of a
successful achievement.

Can you tell me about a marketing campaign that you have been involved in and how successful or otherwise it was and why?
A chance for you to shine. Talk
through your most successful
campaign, taking it step by step, the
actions you took and vitally detailing
the successful impact. How much did
you add to the bottom line in terms of
profitability? By what percentage did
you increase turnover? How many
units did your campaign sell? Strong
figures are all evidence givers and can
really make a powerful impression.

What do you think of our marketing campaigns to date? What changes would you make?
In your research review the various
advertising and marketing campaigns
the company has used, what the range
of products is, and what they sell for.
There may be information available
about the company’s policies or
intentions for the future, or some
ideas that you can come up with that
would be relevant. With prior
knowledge of the campaigns and
product(s) you can immediately enter
into meaningful discussions with the
interviewer. Being pro-active,
engaging, and having some positive
creative ideas will put you well ahead
of a large percentage of the other
applicants in the eyes of your
interviewer.

Tell me about a successful marketing campaign you recently worked on. What was your contribution?
Share information but be careful
of maintaining company
confidentiality. Focus on a
campaign that relates to the job
you are interviewing for.
Highlight supporting metrics such
as increase in sales, ROI,
customer acquisition rate, leads.
Focus on the specifics of why the
campaign succeeded and quantify
your personal contribution.

Tell me about a brand that you think is an example of good marketing
Identify one of your favourite brands and it’s
positioning and target. In other words, who is
the brand trying to reach and what are they
trying to tell them. Discuss how the brand uses
the marketing variables to support its
positioning using the 4 P’s (product, price,
place and promotion) and give examples about
how your brand delivers against each.

Which of our products/services most appeals to you and why?
For any marketing interview you must
familiarise yourself with what the company
does and it’s successful products/services. This
will allow you to identify its appeal and then
describe how the marketing strategy has
worked. An example might be Walker’s crisps
tasting nice and through the good marketing
strategy are now also perceived as good fun
which is obviously important when one of their
biggest markets is children.

Analyse this advert and pretend that you are the client looking at it for the first time. What do you think?
Look closely because the advert won’t
be perfect. Begin by defining that a
great advert makes people want to run
out and buy the product. Great adverts
might not win awards but they sell
products. The most effective adverts
tend to have a unique, relevant product
benefit, a strong link between the brand
and the benefit and are engaging
through use of words and colour.

out an example that shows you have it.
This is also your opportunity to

candidates.
