Celebrates One Year Anniversary

A year ago, Tooele County publicized its fi ndings that

7 out of 10 teenagers in Tooele County don’t drink alcohol. Th ey proceeded to launch a campaign aimed at further reducing underage drinking across Tooele County. Th e campaign, which targets teens and preteens and is part of the Tooele County school system, kicked off its second year on Tuesday, June 22, at Tooele Veterans Memorial Park. Many local residents, community and business leaders att ended the event as well as Art Brown, President of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Utah and Doug Murakmi, Education Director of the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

MostDont.org, a persuasive media campaign, was created to help reduce underage drinking by changing the social misperception that most teens in Tooele County drink, when in reality 7 out of 10 don’t. What originally started as a media campaign has grown to become a community social effort with support and help from each corner of our county. Underage drinking is a community problem

and the community has been part of the ongoing solution. As you can see here today, many individuals and businesses have stepped forward and shown support for this campaign, and Tooele County’s youth will benefit from their generosity. To all of you, and to the many others who aren’t here today, thank you for your work over this past year, and thank you for helping Tooele County’s youth.”

Tooele City Mayor Patrick Dunlavy welcomed the crowd and thanked MostDon’t.org director Amy Bate, for her dedication to this program. He also discussed the partnership of Tooele City’s Communities That Care program, and the great working relationship they have with the MostDon’t.org program. Tooele City Police Chief Ron Kirby also addressed the group and reminded them that there’s a good reason that drinking before 21 is against the law. “All it takes is to see one teen boy killed in a car accident or one young girl bruised and crying after a party to know why teens shouldn’t drink. Underage drinking increases violence, crime, accidents, injuries, disruptions of the peace, truancy, drug use and more. Alcohol affects the adolescent brain far differently than an adult brain. Because teens are undergoing rapid brain development, they are more easily addicted. A teen who begins drinking before the age of 15 has a 40% chance of becoming alcohol-dependent, versus just a 7% chance of addiction had he or she waited until the legal drinking age of 21.”

Debbie Winn, Executive Director of the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce, attended the event to represent the business community. “The Most Don’t campaign is a unique underage drinking prevention campaign. Unlike efforts that speak to parents, Most Don’t targets teens and pre-teens. It runs as part of our schools system with the support of school administrators, local businesses, and community officials. It’s the only campaign of its kind in Utah, and it works. The fact is, underage drinking is a problem in our community. It’s starting earlier than ever. Elementary kids are doing it, and they’re not just experimenting. Research shows that 6th graders are binge drinking—drinking to get drunk. Underage drinking is a community problem that requires a community solution. It all starts with the perceptions people have about underage drinking. As a community, we can change this misperception that most teens drink, and Most Don’t is the answer.”

If you have a Tooele County business or beer license and have not received your renewal notice, please call the Clerk’s Office at 435-843-3140 and talk to Michelle.

Tooele County Business Licenses may be renewed on line at www.co.tooele.ut.us, click on “Online Services” in the blue bar across the top of the screen, “Online Payments” and then “Renew Business License”. If your license is not renewed by June 30th there will be an additional $25 charge for each month that it is past due, until September when it will be cancelled, along with your Conditional Use Permit, if you have one.

Scott Parson, CEO of Staker Parson Company, expressed his excitement to announce six new mixer trucks featuring messages about preventing underage drinking. “This is the first set of mixer trucks in the state wrapped with such a message, and we’re hopeful that the trucks will serve as moving billboards, seen across Tooele County, reminding teens and parents about the dangers of underage drinking. Experimenting with alcohol is NOT a teen rite of passage; it kills 6 times as many kids as all other illegal drugs combined. Kids listen to their parents, teachers, and advisors more than most adults realize, so it’s important to clearly let them know that you do not approve of underage drinking. We at Staker Parson believe in this effort to prevent teen drinking in Tooele County. Through this partnership, we are committed to raise community awareness about the dangers of underage drinking and the fact that most kids in Tooele County don’t drink. Remember, alcohol and teens don’t mix!” Tooele County recognizes that underage drinking has become a growing problem throughout Utah, and it hurts everyone.

With the awareness that it is a community problem requiring a community solution, the Tooele campaign’s objective is to let teens know the truth about who is, and who isn’t, drinking and that teens are normal if they don’t drink. For those who are drinking, it informs them of the potential harmful effects of their decision. A young teen is five times more likely than an adult to become addicted to alcohol, and of the 16 million alcoholics in the US, one in four is a teenager. What’s more, studies show that two out of three teen drinkers go on to use other illegal drugs, like marijuana and meth. The MostDont.org campaign is changing minds and changing norms, and the reduction in underage drinking is improving the lives of everyone in our communities. Teens and parents are the keys to prevention, and it’s their positive relationships that lead to most teens choosing not to drink. Most teens in Tooele County chose not to drink, and the always have. Many teens feel pressure to drink based on the misperception that “everybody is doing it,” when in reality, just the opposite is true. Most Don’t.

Tooele County Trails Com-mittee recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony, sponsored by the Tooele County Chamber of Com-merce, to celebrate the opening of the Oquirrh Mountain Trail Head. The Greek Station is a mobile restaurant that is based in

Stansbury Park, but also travels to big events in Salt Lake City, the rest of Utah, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming to serve the one-of-a-kind Real, Authentic Gyro. Georgios Takos started the Greek Station about four years ago. He is a first generation Greek-American. He is proud to be an American, but also very proud of his heritage. He has traveled to many parts of the world, speaks four different languages and has traveled to almost all the states in the United States and found that all people and places have a special beauty and quality. New York City was his home for about 20 years before moving to California. Georgios and his wife, Karine, had a Greek restaurant in San Diego, but because of their love for traveling, the Greek Station was born. Many people ask, “Why did

you move here?” Georgios reply is that he loves the Stansbury Mountains and its people. Stansbury reminds him of him of his home and village in Greece. Stansbury Park is almost the exact same place latitude-wise as his village in Greece. This area is beautiful, it’s in the middle of everywhere for him and his wife to travel, it’s easy to commute from, but mainly the people are wonderful and they really appreciate the food. The Greek Station’s menu is comprised of Georgios’ favorite Greek and American food with his special Greek seasoning. His energy comes from his love for the fast-paced and fast food of New York City. Everyone knows a woman that has been to a Pampered Chef, Mary Kay, or a Tup-perware party, but what about the men? Well now there is a party for them; it’s called MANCAVE. Paul Bunting of Tooele

is the fi rst salesman of the Minnesota-based company; actually he is the only sales consultant in the western United States. So what is this ManCave? First an individual decides to have a “MEATing”

Customer Service at its Best


I have been a customer of Phil’s Glass in the past usually on win-

dows for our vehicles. I had not been to Phil’s Glass in quite some time, which was a good thing be-cause that meant I didn’t need a new window or windshield. My husband and I built our home 11 years ago and we have recently been doing some upgrades, one of those being a new framed mirror in the master bathroom and using the old plain mirror in the walk-in closet. We needed the mirror to be 3.5” smaller on one side. In preparation, I called ahead to Phil’s Glass to see how much the cut would cost, they told me the fee and which was much less than I imagined. When I took the mirror to Phil’s Glass, I expected to drop it off and pick it up later because they are always so busy. However, the man I spoke to came out to the truck, carried the mirror in and told me to wait a few minutes, if I could. When he re-turned, with the mirror 3.5” small-er, he placed the extremely heavy mirror back into my truck. When I asked him how much I owed him he said, “For something like this, don’t worry about it.” I told him I really appreciated what he had done and shook his hand. I was so pleased to have such an awkward task done in such a short amount of time and for no cost. I planned on paying the small fee, but was pleas-antly surprised when I was told not to. As many of you know, mak-ing upgrades on a house is costly, so to save money is valuable to use in other areas of the house. Th ank you Phil’s Glass for your customer service and thoughtfulness. Construction on the new $11 million Mountain West Women’s Center is nearing completion. When “delivered” in August, the new 16,000 square-foot facility will provide local women with greater comfort and convenience in obstetrical and gynecological care.

The women’s center has a dedicated entrance on the northwest side of the hospital. It features eight labor/delivery rooms, five post-partum rooms, and a surgical room for C-sections and gynecological surgeries.
