Fire Prevention Week
About Fire Prevention Week
Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in com-
memoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused
devastating damage. This horrific conflagration killed more than 250 people, left
100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000
acres of land.
Importance of Fire Prevention
In a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Fire safety education isn’t just for school children. Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk in fires, making it important for every member of the community to take some time every October during Fire Prevention Week to make sure they understand how to stay safe in case of a fire.
Bring Awareness
While children under 5 and adults over 65 are at the highest risk for injury or death in a fire, people of all ages are vulnerable. In fact, the risk of a nonfatal fire injury is highest for those between 20 and 49, showing that fire safety education is essential for every-one. Additional risk factors include race, socio-economic status, education level, and geographic location.
The purpose of Fire Prevention Week is to bring awareness to the risk of death in case of a fire and provide educational resources to people of all ages, races, and socioeco-nomic status in order to keep everyone safe.
This week we celebrated Fire Prevention Week here at Tony Gonzalez Elementary and Santa Maria Middle School! We had the honor of having the La Feria Fire Department come by and give our students a presentation. Firefighters educated our students about the basic but essential steps to take to reduce the likelihood of a fire — and how to es-cape safely in the event of one.
The Week of October 8 - October 12, 2018
It is the policy of Santa Maria ISD not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex or handicap in its vocational programs, services or activities as required by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended; Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972; and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended.
Learning About Place Value
Ms. Solis - 1st Grade
In first grade mathematics the students will
be comparing numbers using place value, and or-
dering these numbers using an open number line.
The students will be introduced to the base-10
place value system. Students will compose and de-
compose numbers through 20 as a sum of so many
tens and so many ones using concrete objects such
as base-10 blocks, pictorial models, the place val-
ue charts, and numerical representations using ex-
panded form and standard form. Students will be
using place value to compare whole numbers up to
20 and represent the comparison using comparative
language and comparison symbols such as >,<, or
=.
This week is fire prevention week here at Tony Gon-
zalez Elementary. The students enjoyed a presentation
from the La Feria Firefighters. They got to go around the
fire engine truck and see all the tools that are on the truck.
The students were so excited and asking a lot of questions.
