From the Desk of our Teacher Librarian, Mrs. Albrecht

Dear Parents,

The library program has some exciting opportunities in store for your child this year. Our program will be promoting the very best of children’s literature to your child with activities designed to help student’s enjoy the stories even more. We are doing our very best to get (or keep) your children “hooked on reading” by recommending specific reading materials to each individual. I will add 100 or more new titles this year of the latest an most exciting books for young readers, including quality non-fiction to help meet the Common Core requirements. At each grade level, students will be learning research and computer skills specifically suited to their developmental needs.

Fall Book Fair

As well we will continue to promote reading through our two Scholastic Book Fairs. Nov 14th-16th are the Fall dates and May 29th-31st are the dates set for Spring. I would love any help from parents or grandparents so if you have the time please contact me at school. There are a few changes to our Library Website this year so check it out at: https://deltalearns.ca/cdlibrary. Author Visit

A School-wide Framework for Enhancing A Caring Culture

2

In the fall, we are practicing lining up to enter the school with the goal that students will enter the school calm, alert and ready to learn.

1

As a school, we are proud of the strong emphasis we place on relationships and caring, in addition to excellence in teaching and learning. Building a sense of shared responsibility, a spirit of community and student leadership is very important for all students. The core values that foster effective relationships and inspire continuous growth at Cliff Drive are Safety, Respect and Responsibility.

Over the past year, the staff has created a school-wide framework to foster student success in the area of personal and social responsibility. The framework is designed to help students reflect on their readiness to follow daily routines and expectations in a school environment where students are safe, respected and responsible.

It is everyone’s responsibility to participate in shaping a positive culture. The shared values are regularly articulated, modeled, promoted and protected by everyone.

Each month we will focus on a social goal from the framework, which when practiced will optimize safety and respect for all students.

To examine the practical application of our beliefs, you may wish to discuss these beliefs at home. Ask your child to consider what each looks like, sounds like and feels like in a variety of environments. Here’s an example when thinking about the playground and field.

Belief Looks Like…

Sounds Like…

Feels Like…

Responsibility Helping younger kids if they get stuck

“I can help you.” “Wait, I’ll get a supervisor to help.” “Are you okay?”

Fun, being encouraged by others and confidence

Respect Kicking the ball gently to younger or less skilled players

“Its your turn now.” “Want to play with us?” “Good catch!”

Welcoming, being included and safe to have fun

Safety Helping someone who is injured. Being safe on playground equipment.

“Are you sure you want to take that jump off the equipment?” “Let’s get help.” “It’s slippery over here, watch out.

There is trust

I can play games and not get hurt.

Medical Treatment of Students/Medical Alert

If your child requires medication in EMERGENCY SITUATIONS at school and you have not completed the required forms, please contact the school and request one as soon as possible.

Nut Free Zone

We have a number of students at Cliff Drive with severe peanut and nut allergies. We are asking everyone to only bring NUT FREE snacks and lunches to school.

Orange Shirt Day September 30th has been declared Orange Shirt Day annually in recognition of the harm the residential school system did to children’s sense of self-esteem and wellbeing and as an affirmation of our commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters. It is one step in the long journey of healing. Everyone is invited to wear an orange shirt on Friday, September 28th in

support of healing and reconciliation. All are welcome to join us for our assembly scheduled for 2:00-2:30 p.m.

We place great emphasis on the security of your

children while they are at school. The front doors are not a pick-up/drop-off area, as the congestion is

unsafe for our students. The only exception to this is a late arrival or early pick-up.

All parents and visitors are reminded to enter during

school hours only via the front door. It is imperative to school security that we know who is in the

building during regular school hours. This also

applies to those parents who like to join their children on the playground at lunchtime. It is for the safety of our children.
