Did You Know?

. . . IVC drivers log over 95,000 miles per year, transporting people to doctor appointments, grocery stores and other essential errands.

. . . IVC is one of the largest volunteer programs in the Metro area, supporting over 500 older and disabled neighbors each year, through a corps of over 500 caring volunteers, who provide over 17,000 hours of service annually.

. . . Over half of our clients live at or near the poverty level, surviving on less than $10,000 per year.

.. . . . Less than 12% of our budge t i s used on a d m i n s t r a t i v e a n d

fundraising expenses.

. . . It costs IVC less than $500 per year to help support someone in their own home, about a tenth the cost of one month in most nursing homes. With the average cost of nursing facility care at $60,000 per year, it could cost our community over 30 million dollars each year if the 500 people we serve could no longer stay in their own homes!

. . .Despite the recent economic challenges, IVC has worked harder than ever to help our neighbors, increasing service levels by 98% over the past five years.

Everyone has a special gift to offer, and the Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers Program provides all the training and support needed to help volunteers share their time and talents with others.

The opportunities are varied and flexible. Great opportuni-ties for youth groups, busi-nesses and congregations to participate in service projects, too.

ATTENTION GARDENERS:

IVC participates in the City of Warren’s Community Garden Project, allowing us to bring fresh vegetables into the homes of some of our neediest clients. If you love to dig in the dirt & grow things, or just want to help some hungry neighbors, contact JoAnn at (586) 757-5551.

Loneliness

Rosalie is a senior citizen living alone. She is 83 years young. She recently had three abdominal surgeries in a one month period of time. Rosalie is not accustomed to being inactive. She volunteered at her church for twenty-two years, sewing aprons and other gift items to be sold for the benefit of the church. She no longer can sew because of poor eyesight. Rosalie, like many senior citizens, had to move away from her church, her neighbors and her friends. She is not familiar with

her new neighbors, and is unable to drive, which makes it difficult to make new friends. She recently was widowed and suffered the death of a daughter a year ago. Her other children live a distance away and she feels they don’t have the time for her, which only intensifies her feeling of loneliness. Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers was able to match Rosalie with Virginia, who is retired, lives alone, and is very caring and compassionate person. Virginia will visit weekly with Rosalie and occasionally provide an outing for lunch, or maybe just a ride to get Rosalie “out into the world” which is something she misses greatly.

After their first visit, our volunteer, Virginia, called the IVC staff at the office. She said that within their first few hours together, the two ladies had laughed together, cried together, and felt the beginning of a wonderful friendship.
