PRESIDENT’S REPORTHi everyoneOur Annual General Meeting held in late February was well attended by members and friends. I am pleased to say that our hard working committee members who had to stand down were re-elected and that we now have a full complement of committee members with Craig McGregor and Charles Andrews being elected. Charles of course was previously a much valued, committee member who has now moved to Taupo permanently. Welcome to you both.MarycontinuestodoawonderfuljobandwillbeincludingthefulllistofClubOfficersinthisNewsletter. Please remember that if you have an issue with something happening (or not happening) in the Club you are most welcome to call or write to me and I will do my best to help. It’s far better for everyone if you do that rather than sit round the kitchen tables complaining to others over a bottle of whisky or after a few wines or beers. The committee is still working on the storage shed and we are awaiting some pricing from a numberofcompaniesthatcouldprovideuswithwhatwewant.Wearebeingflexibleandwillselectthetype,sizeandstructureofafacilitythatwefeeltheclubcanafford.Those of you who frequent the rooms where the mattresses have seen better days will be pleased to know that the Club is investing in some new mattresses. Craig McGregor is currently researching prices through his contacts and we’ll be replacing the old ones where appropriate shortly. He has tested all the mattresses and some were found to be OK but we are planning to replace all mattresses on a regular basis. We still have not presented our verbal submission on the changes to the Conservation Act. Dave Nicholls is still waiting for the call from Wellington, it seems that they have been overwhelmed by sheer numbers which is a very good sign.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT (Cont)Did you know we have 521 members in NZ and 28 overseas. At the Annual General Meeting Julian Proctor raised his concern at the lack of access to the left bank of the lower section of the Tongariro River. Following discussion at our committee meeting the next morning I wrote to WRC and DoC. In response I received the two emails below which I feel were quite positive. Firstly the letter sent to WRC copied to DoC and TFAC by President Ken on 27th February 2019 concerning Angler access to left bank of the lower section of the Tongariro RiverAt our recent Annual General Meeting it was drawn to our attention that the true left bank of the Tongariro lower section has inadequate Angler access. We understand there are some issues involved with this however we feel that some attention is needed to provide at least some access, albeit temporary. An improvement on the right-bank is appreciated however this does not give access which used to be available through Awamate Road to the lower pools. Your attention to this matter would be very much appreciated by Anglers and all involved. cc. DOC and TFAC.

Email received 28th February 2019 from DoCThanks for sending this through Ken,ItsfairtosaythisismoreofanissuefortheDOCfisheryteamtolooktoaddressratherthantheRegional Council, and we have been exploring some options recently.I am happy to get in touch to advise you where we get to in the coming weeks. Many thanksDaveDave Conley Operations Manager Taupo FisheryTurangiOffice|CentralNorthIslandRegion3 Town Centre, Turangi 3334 Postal address: Private Bag 2, Turangi 3353Email [email protected] Mobile 027 4657803 Department of Conservation, Te Papa Atawhai www.doc.govt.nz

Email received 11th March 2019 from WRCHi Ken,Thank you for your letter,We have discussed this and suggest the followingIn the past, access to certain areas of the Tongariro has aided WRC’s river management works. However, DoC takes the lead on consultation with landowners and maintenance of the access waysthereafterforthepurposeofanglingopportunity.InthiscaseWRCseesanongoingbenefitto continue to access this reach for activities such as river inspections and staying on top of juvenile invasive weed encroachment etc. We believe it is prudent for WRC to support DoC with this initial request. In addition aid the ongoing maintenance of this track where we have relevant works activities in the area. THE REAL SERIOUS STUFF - FishingFrom Sporting Life - March 2019 It has been a great Summer in terms of the weather ! Nice and hot and dry.

Christmas and New Year reports from most of the boaties were that they were struggling to catch fish.Acoupleofreasonshere…onewasthatitwasverywindyovertheholidayperiodandtwothefishwerereportedasquitedeep.Normallyanglerswillfisharoundthe30m(90ft)markbutanglerswhowerecatchingfishweregoing40-60mdeep.Besttechniquestocatchfishthisyear has generally been trolling with a downrigger and deep jigging, however there was a patch there where the harling was doing really well. Also take note that if conditions are windy you can still get out and troll while waiting for conditions to calm before jigging but I am seeing a mindset withanglersnowisthatyoucanonlycatchfishjigging.IthinkovertheChristmasperiodanglersmissedopportunitiestocatchfishasmostwerewaitingforacalmday!!Alwaysrememberthatfisharetherebutyouhavetofindthem.Goodsmeltwerereportedinthelatespringandrecentlyfresh water koura have been reported. The food has been there for them so we should see some nicefishintheriversthiscomingyear.

We had a great Cicada season this year and a phenomenal Passion Vine Hopper season. As I writethis, fishwerestillseenrisingintheTongariroRiver.

There has been plenty of action in the summer on big browns and just in the last week or two we haveseensomefreshrunrainbowsentertheTongariro.Asaresultofseeingthesefish, anglershave done a little better at the Delta.

These fresh run early rainbows are generally of a good size and in great condition. There are not many at this stage as numbers continue to build as we head towards the winter but they are definitelyworthcatching.
