Tolland Public School School Newsletter
We acknowledge the Wiradjuri people and recognise the strength, resilience
and capacity of Aboriginal people in our community.
Dear Parents,
It feels as though this week the whole school community can take a collective breath. It has been an extraordinarily busy start to the term with an enormous range of activities. Please make sure you keep up to date with school happenings through our newsletter or contact our great staff in the school office.
Education Week Education Week last week was full of so many wonderful activities. Firstly, congratulations to all the students who performed at the Marketplace. They were cheered on by a very parochial crowd of parents, grandparents and friends of the school. A fantastic effort by Ms Pokoney, Mrs Buete with the Kinder/Year 1 choir; Mrs Elphick and Mr Fryer with the Year 1/2/3 choir and Mrs Comtesse & Miss Dimi for their choreography with the primary dance group. Also a big thank you to Mrs Harriott, Mrs Nixon & Mrs Comtesse for organising the Tolland display boards and for organising the delivery and pick up of the boards. During the week Mrs Stubbs also held a very successful Book Fair in which she sold $1700 worth of books. It is so pleasing to know so many great books have gone home. I hope you have taken time to share a story or two! Thank you also to the staff that opened their classrooms to parents on Thursday. It is always pleasing to see parents actively supporting their children and take the time to share in their learning.
Kindergarten 2013 Enrolments As we are finalising arrangements for orientation programs for students enrolling for Kindergarten next year (2013) we do remind parents to ensure you have completed an enrolment form for your child and submitted it to the office. This request is particularly for parents who have other children already enrolled at the school. Details on anticipated numbers to ensure adequate staffing and facilities for 2013 are due for submission to the Department in the next couple of weeks.
General Assistant Interviews This week interviews will be held for the position of the General Assistant. Mr Mark Harriott has done a tremendous job relieving in the position for the past term and I am sure you will agree the school grounds are looking fabulous.
Family Payment Many families were lucky to receive the Government’s Family payment of around $400 per primary school aged child. This payment is designed to assist families meet the educational needs of their children. I would encourage families to use this money to assist them in paying for the Stage 3 Excursion to Canberra, purchase uniform items such as jackets, tracksuits and polo tops or new school shoes/runners.
Have a great week
Matthew Gray

Careers in the Spotlight
On Tuesday 31st July, Year 6 had the opportunity to attend a "Careers in the Spotlight Day" at Mount Austin High School. It was a great way for the students to experience the link between literacy and numeracy to career options when transitioning to high school. Some feedback from the students: "I attended Childcare which was amazing, Painting and Decorating which was creative, Horticulture which was surprisingly tiring but great, and Community Engagement which was my favourite because we got to let out our designs and how we would set things out." - Milika. "I got to have a look at a sewerage plant and learnt how it works. At Water Management we looked at different types of water, testing different samples from the lagoon, river and lake. At Surveying, our group found chocolates using a GPS system." - Harley. "At Horticulture I enjoyed being out in the sun, doing digging and planting. At Fitness I loved how we got to shoot arrows at the moving exercise ball and pretended it was bush tucker. In Town and Planning I liked how we got to design your own little piece of land. At the Council Station I liked how we got to sit in a bobcat and beep the horn, and someone accidentally started the machine!" - Hannah. "My group went to the Animals, Sports, Town Planning and Horticulture stations. We all had great fun." - Allira. "In Childcare we learned how to change a nappy! It was funny because some people put them on backwards! We learnt that you can't leave a baby alone. In Painting and Decorating we learnt different styles of painting." - Latrell. "The Council Sewerage Station showed us how you can put a camera pipe down the hole and watch it on the computer in the van. I enjoyed Cabinet Making the best, we learnt how to use a laser eye and got to make a cabinet with a shelf and a door." - Karl. Rachel McGrath
