How the couple overcome their bitter feud and try to overcome the tragedy forms the crux of the ending. Brilliant movie. Handled sensitively.4 .5 stars- Raj Iyer

Ms. Divya: At such a young age you seem to have gained a lot of experience in movie making. Please share your learnings with us.Mr. Chetan: My first editing experience was under my own mom’s TV show when she was the music director for Gemini and Maa TV in Hyderabad. I used to go there to just fidget around with the gadgets and play games on the computer. My cousin used to teach me the basics of editing and once when he got really sick I volunteered to try editing if they wanted me to!

Ms. Divya: When was the first time you did professional editing for a movie?

Mr. Chetan: It was post my education. In 2010, it was for a film called Karna in Telugu. Even before that I had done editing for a blockbuster film by Mr. Vipul Shah. I would say that I did start my career pretty early!

Even when I joined my film school, I wanted to join as a Director and I did get to join as a Direction student and when I met my professor, my direction unit staff & my editing Sir. When they saw my editing skill they said that Direction is all

about knowing all the 3 languages: writing, editing and acting. All this comes from life experience is what I feel.

I shifted from editing to direction during my college days itself. But then as an editor, I could see frames and I still can see frames; this helped me understand the process of movie making better.

Ms. Divya: Who are some of your favourite filmmakers and most liked films?Mr. Chetan: As far as the Indian cine industry is concerned, I would say Mani Rathnam Sir has always been a huge inspiration! I especially

loved the way, Dil Se was made and the way in which it was explained to the audience. Mr. Shekhar Kapoor inspires me a lot and in world cinema, Mr. Martin Scorsese is a huge motivation for me!

Ms. Divya: What are the biggest challenges that a filmmaker faces?Mr. Chetan: Lately, I think the most neglected area is most films is the script. You face a lot of challenges executing the script since you can see practical difficulties in executing the s c r i p t o n l y once you start m a k i n g t h e film. So, the s c r i p t i s definitely one of the biggest c h a l l e n g e s . Understanding what kind of artists come into the picture and what kind of camera to use was very challenging especially because it is a low budget film. We didn’t have the liberty of money, time and technology like for example we haven’t used even 1 crane in the film! But you won’t realize this since my cameraman, Mr. Naiyer Ghufran, has done an amazing job.

Ms. Divya: What’s the one piece of advice you would give to aspiring filmmakers?Mr. Chetan: Have a loooottttt of patience and that there is no substitute for hardwork. Be open to watching movies and listening to music. If you like a movie, watch it once and if you don’t like it then watch it twice so that you understand what you don’t like in it, so that you don’t make that mistake in your film! Make sure to make good connections, Make sure you talk to the right kind of people, Be at the right place and Justtttt be patient. Filmmaking is a huge responsibility and you need to be sure you make socially responsible movies.

The Serbian film DESPITE THE FOG is based on the refugee problem in Europe and (even throughout the world) views on which are strongly divided. The view taken by the couple in the movie, particularly the wife, who has lost her child is only one side of the divide as she herself struggles to convince the orphaned boy Muhamad to take her son's place. It is very well directed film on the mute question to accept or reject refuges and the Director has handled the issue very delicately and ends it quietly without giving any clue if refuges can be openly welcomed. The refugee problem is a perennial issue and no fixed solution can be found is what is highlighted in the film. A must see again for film lovers. -V Srinivasan
