Some good news last week, we have fielded several calls in the past few weeks about if there would be layoffs for the meat inspectors and what this might do for our industry. I’m very happy to report as of now the President has signed the bill that will keep that portion of the ag budget fully funded. I guess they get something right once in a while. We had made several calls to congressmen and I believe at times it can make a difference. It’s also times like this that memberships to your national organizations really pay off. It’s so important having people fight for our rights in agriculture. As more and more people are removed from the farm this will only become more important. Boy this final 4 has been one for the ages. I’d say if you have 2 teams left in your bracket consider yourself very lucky. Louisville looks pretty tough to deal with.

DENISON Choosing A Lawn Mower To Fit Your Needs
(NAPSI)—While you don’t want to let the grass grow under your feet when it’s time to get a new lawn mower, there are a few steps to consider first:
• Your Yard Size: For yards that are about three-quarters of an acre or less, a walk-be-hind mower can be a good choice. The small-er your yard, the small-er the mower deck can be. For example, a 21- or 22-inch walk-behind mower is commonly used on smaller yards.
If your yard is larger than three-quarters of an acre, consider a rear-engine riding mower or a smaller lawn tractor. Riding mowers with
rear-mounted engines provide good visibil-ity and excellent mobil-ity. Look for mowing decks between 28 and 42 inches wide and en-gines from 12 to 20 hp.
A zero-turn rider or front- engine lawn trac-tor may be appropriate for one- to three-acre yards. Look for 16 to 24 hp and a mowing deck 38 to 44 inches wide.
For yards larger than three acres, a larger ze-ro-turn rider or garden tractor is probably best. Look for engines with at least 24 hp and mowing decks in the 48- to 61-inch range.
• The Terrain: A typical walk-behind mower is fine for a small, flat yard. If your land is sloped or hilly, consider a self-propelled walk-behind mower. One with big
back wheels is easier to maneuver across rough terrain. All riding mow-ers can handle varied terrain, though some are better on slopes than others.
Be careful on slopes and hills. If you’re using a riding mower, mow up and down the incline, never across. With a walk-behind mower, always mow across the incline and never pull the mower back toward your feet.
• Your Physical Condi-tion: If pushing a lawn mower is difficult, you may want a self-pro-pelled mower even with a very small yard. Simi-larly, a riding mower may be the right choice if you’re unable to easily walk behind a mower.
• The Engine: Look for a quality engine suited for the size of the job you expect it to do. For ex-
ample, Briggs & Stratton engines can be found in several brands of lawn mowers ranging from small walk-behinds to large zero-turn mowers and garden tractors.
• Lawn Mower Fea-tures: New lawn and garden tractors from Simplicity have Free Floating mower decks with full-width rollers, traction options, push-button start and two- or four-wheel suspension. Many zero-turn mow-ers offer suspension systems and ground-following mower decks.

It was nice to hear how many people called and said they found pennies from heaven. It was very nice to know that these pennies do have a meaning because they don’t have a meaning in our government. I should have known the way Tiger has been playing golf there was some new meat in his diet. The MASTER’S golf tournament is in 2 weeks. I will be watching to see if he will be purring like a little pussy cat or roaming the woods like a real tiger.

Making Life Better For Your Older Pets
(NAPSI)—It’s never too early to take steps to make life easier for your pet for when he or she hits the golden years. Just as with people, proper diet, exercise and smart lifestyle deci-sions can delay some of the aging process and help your pet live a lon-ger, healthier life.
That even holds true for one of the more common problems for aging pets—arthritis. Here are some steps you can take before your pet becomes a se-nior to help reduce the risk or lessen the sever-ity of arthritis:
Evaluate your pet’s body condition—Too much weight on your pet puts him or her at risk for diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. Excess weight puts too much strain on your pet’s joints, causing car-tilage to degenerate. If you can’t feel your pet’s ribs, your pet needs to go on a diet. Also watch how your pet moves and plays for any issues that may be developing. Work with a veterinar-ian or holistic profes-sional when you first spot problems.
Read the label—Dogs and cats are carnivores and need a healthy dose of protein in their diet. Read the labels of their food and look for ac-tual protein sources—chicken, beef and fish—instead of by-products. Rice and other grains can also help your pet pack on extra pounds. Beware of too many preservatives as well.
Get active—It’s very important to work on activities that keep your dog and cat moving. Walks, games of fetch and other activities keep your dog’s muscles toned and cut down on the risk of arthritis. It’s important to work play into your cat’s day as well to keep him or her moving, too.
An ounce of preven-tion—Running, agility and other active games are a great way to keep your pet in shape. How-ever, make sure you aren’t pushing your dog to work out too hard and try to avoid activi-ties that could put your dog at risk for bone or muscular injuries. These kinds of injuries make an animal more prone to certain types of arthritis when aging.
Start early on supple-ments—Nutr it ional supplements are a growing trend for pets these days. It helps to start your pets young on supplements that will help them rebuild cartilage before arthri-tis sets in. Look for products that provide glucosamine and chon-droitin, such as Cose-quin Joint Supplement and Cosequin Soft Chews for dogs and cats. Dasuquin Joint Supplements for dogs and cats provide a more advanced formula that helps rebuild your pet’s cartilage and lessen joint inflammation. Some of these prod-ucts come in soft chews for dogs and a powder that can be sprinkled in food for cats.

(NAPSI)—We all know giving a dog a treat is a common pet owner behavior. Dog owners treat when dogs sit or stay or simply because they are happy to see their canine compan-ions after a long day at the office. Cat treat-
ing, on the other hand, seems less practiced. However, new reports indicate that cat treat-ing is actually more widespread than one might think.
American Pet Products Association reports in-dicate that in the last 10 years, the growth of cat-owning households that give treats is more than double the growth of dog households that treat. Today, more than two-thirds of cat own-ers give treats. The cat treat market is explod-ing. Part of this is simple economics, but another
part has to do with the nature and personality of the animals them-selves.
Historically, cats are more independent than dogs. Whether it comes to participating in exercise activities or showing symptoms of illness, dogs are much more connected to their owners. This is not always the case for our feline friends. Cat own-ers, then, are more like-ly to indulge their cats with a nutritionally du-bious treat in order to bond over the treating experience and to buy treats that have added health benefits because they may feel they have less direct awareness of their pet’s health.
Treat manufactur-ers have noticed this trend. The mass mar-ket of cat treats—in-expensive, convenient, lacking specific health benefits—is well estab-lished, but the healthy end of the spectrum is
