GOOD evening to everyone attending today’s match at Love Lane, including the players, officials and support-ers from Clanfield and the match officials.

Tonight we welcome our neighbours Clanfield for this Portsmouth Senior Cup tie where all might not be as it seems.

Let me explain. On the bench tonight managing the side will be our reserve team manager Jamie Steeves and his assistant Andy Vernon.

They will have their pick of the players from the first team and reserve team squads for this competition, so expect to see a mix of some of our first team regulars playing alongside our up and coming youngsters.

We are in no way taking this competition lightly, nor the opponents we face tonight. Jamie was given the same role at his previous club Moneyfields – ie taking charge for matches in this competition – and he has enjoyed considerable success in this cup.

For our supporters and all spectators tonight it will be an opportunity for you to see some of the talent we have coming through, which hopefully will be in the first team squad regularly in the future.

This is also a chance for these players to catch the eye and push their claim for a place in Ian Saunders’ starting 11 in the Wessex League.

I’m sure Clanfield will give us a tough test this evening though. They have a strong reputation in the Hampshire Premier League and they have a squad full of players we have come across in the Wessex League previously, so they come to Love Lane with plenty of experience.

Let’s hope we get another cracking evening of en-tertainment. Enjoy the game and Up The Rams!

GRAEME MOIR, VICE CHAIRMAN

RAMS report

Petersfield Town 3Blackfield and Langley 2

PETERSFIELD battled back from being a goal down twice in this match to extend their winning run to eight games in a row and also to take a two point lead at the top of the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division table.

Although they had an off day com-pared to their recent high standards of play, the Rams showed their battling qualities on Saturday to snatch the win with only four minutes remaining and after being reduced to ten men.

The visitors couldn’t quite work out how they were leaving Love Lane with nothing from the game and in fairness they could easily have been out of sight by half time.

Blackfield took the lead after ten minutes when Petersfield lost the ball in midfield and the visitors worked the ball up the right wing. The ball was played into the box where Ekow Elliott was completely unmarked in front of goal and he had time to guide the ball past Matt Shortt and into the net.

The Rams drew level on 24 minutes when a quick clearance from Shortt fell to Joe Richardson in midfield. He swept the ball out to the right to Danny Thomp-son and his cross into the box was half cleared. However, Ash Howes picked up the loose ball and curled his shot past Gareth Barfoot and into the net.

Shortt then had to make a good save from Danilo Cadete when the Blackfield striker burst into the penalty area but Cadete put his side in front again on 33 minutes.

A free kick from the right was par-tially cleared by the Petersfield defence,

who suddenly stopped when the visitors appealed for a penalty. The hesitation allowed Cadete to pounce on the ball and he passed his shot into the net.

Howes almost got a second goal when the ball fell to him on the edge of the area and it looked like Barfoot got a hand to his curling shot but a goal kick was given.

Petersfield equalised three minutes before half time when Andy Todd charged down an attempted clearance. He then took the ball into the penalty area and around the keeper before slotting his shot past two defenders on the goal line.

Elliott almost restored Blackfield’s lead on the stroke of half time but his fizzing effort went just over the crossbar.

There were very few chances to speak of during the second half. The game be-came a battle in midfield with both sides not wanting to give their opponent the upper hand and both knowing the next scorer would probably win the game.

Three minutes after the interval Black-field went close to scoring when a free kick from the left was flicked on at the near post by Kevin Gibbens but the ball bounced off the far post and the follow up effort was screwed well wide of the goal.

Late on in the half Alex Ward received his second yellow card of the game and Petersfield were reduced to ten men.

However, they regrouped and snatched the victory with a goal on 86 minutes. A corner from the right hand side found Todd completely unmarked in the six yard box and he thumped his header into the net to make it 3-2.

Deep into injury time Cadete picked up the ball on the left and drove to the edge of the penalty area but his fierce dipping and curling shot just cleared the goal.

Rams battle back to win and go top of the Wessex League

MANAGER’S notes

MAY I start by welcoming all officials, staff and players of Clanfield FC to The Sameday Express Freight Stadium for tonight’s Portsmouth Senior Cup tie.

It’s an honour for me and AV to have been given the chance to oversee the squad in this competi-tion, a competition in which as a management partnership we’re actually unbeaten in.

We are under no illusion it’s an opportunity to bring silver-ware to the club, a club that I couldn’t wait to join in the sum-mer and in my opinion is devel-oping very quickly both on and off the pitch.

All supporters can be assured I’ll strive to support the gaffer, Ian Saunders, by

bringing the best youngsters around the area to the

club, in order to benefit the first team.

May I finish by wishing my son, Biff, a happy 14th birthday today, and thank you all for attending this evening.

UP THE RAMS!Steevesy
