valentine’s day

No Valentine should be left empty handedand when it comes to presents jewelleryand Valentine’s has always been a matchmade in heaven. Petersfield jewelleryexpert and happily married, Jill Townersays, “Whilst Valentine’s Day is celebratedacross the world by couples in love withthe exchanging of gifts, which includeflowers or chocolates, nothing says “I loveyou” like a thoughtfully chosen piece ofjewellery. Perhaps for 2013 loving husbandsin marriages that have stood the test of timemay consider giving the lady in their livesa gift this Valentine’s Day to say thank youfor all the love and care. In my relationshipwith Trevor, even after all these years, westill keep to the tradition of celebrating ourlove for each other by exchanging cards andgifts on Valentine’s Day. I also decorate thereception rooms at home with heart shapeddesigns and make a special display for thedinner table.”

For those looking for an alternative tojewellery this Valentine’s, Gabriella ShawCeramics have created a variety handpainted, hand crafted Valentine’s themeditems, featuring mugs, jugs and teapots. For those with a sweet tooth, Cocoa Moonprovide a beautifully designed heart-shapedbox containing a carefully selected rangeof dark, milk and white chocolates fromPrestat. Making time for some regular exercise issomething that should be a part of anyone’soverall health and fitness routine. But, manypeople find it difficult to stay on track withtheir program, once the initial enthusiasmof the New Year has faded. Here we’vebeen talking to some local fitness experts, discovering different ways to get fit and staymotivated.

New and improvedPetersfield’s Taro Leisure Centre has justseen a fantastic £150,000 refurbishment thatnow includes a spin studio, state of the artcardio, resistance and audio equipment, a

Getting leanin 2013

2013 is upon us, and now is the time when manypeople think about how we can get rid of some ofthat festive indulgence

TRX Station, as well as a Flabelos machineand sunbed. So when it came to getting fitfor the New Year it was only natural we’dpop along to put some of these fantasticfacilities to the test!

Arriving at the centre I was greeted byDave Brown. Before starting my exercisesDave asked me a series of questions toestablish my level of fitness and goals forthe session. Dave was then able to tailora routine to meet my individual needs. Toget me warmed up, Dave began with 10minutes on an exercise bike. The bike hada selection of settings so I could adjust theresistance depending on how hard I wantedto work. Nice and warm I then moved on tothe rowing machine. Again, Dave adjustedthe settings to challenge me with the workout. Here I completed a series of threecircuits, each getting slightly harder eachtime. Cardio complete, Dave then tookme through a series of weight resistanceexercises. I was slightly concerned aboutthese as weights have never been one of mystrong points (no pun intended!) However,

Dave was careful to push me just to, and notpast, my limits. My exercises were finishedoff with some work on the TRX machine.

Using unique suspension, this originalmachine allows your leverage gravity andyour bodyweight to perform hundreds ofexercises. I found it particularly effective, firstly when doing squats then the plank. After my session at the Taro Centre I felttired but also very motivated from a funworkout on state of the art equipment withsupportive staff.

On the runRunning is one of the best forms of aerobicexercise and you don’t have to join anexpensive gym to do it. Liss RunnersChairman, Will Purchase has beenexplaining to us the benefits of this exerciseand sharing his top advice for maintainingit in the New Year:

Regular exercise has many proven benefits

WalkaboutExercise doesn’t have to be somethingextreme. Did you know many of us couldmassively improve our health by justcompleting a brisk walk 30 minutes a day?Petersfield Walking for Health host twowalks every Wednesday from Winton HouseCourt Yard, High Street, at 10 o`clock. One isslower paced and the other brisker both lastabout an hour. Walk Leader, David Mongerexplains, “Our Voluntary Walk Leadersorganise a different walk each week. For achange of scenery we sometimes arrangean away day walk. These outing are verypopular, walkers organise car sharing. Thereis a very strong social side to our walking

group, we have a B.B.Q in the summer anda Christmas Lunch, plus we always havecoffee together after each weekly walk. Many friendships have been made overthe seven years that we have been walkingtogether plus great benefits to our health. It is a free and very popular happy walkinggroup with as many as forty to fifty peopleattending each week.

You will find a very warm welcome atPetersfield Walking for Health whateveryour age or walking ability.”

Further Details from David Monger01730 [email protected]

including reducing your risk of many majorillnesses, losing weight and making youfeel good! If you’re not yet fit enough tostart running then you could begin with aprogramme of walking and perhaps moveon to running from there.

Will’s two tips for gettingmotivated to run:• Run with other people, it’s much morefun. Join your local running club such asLiss Runners. You do not have to be a fastrunner to join, the club has runners of allstandards and meets every Wednesdayevening at the Liss Triangle Centreand every Thursday in Petersfield. Allnewcomers are welcome!

• Set yourself a goal. If you are new torunning your first goal might be to simplycomplete a 10km race. After that you willinevitably want to do a better time, orperhaps build up to a half or full marathon. If road running isn’t your thing there aremany cross-country and trail races around.Once you join a club you will discover allsorts of races and events, and you’ll alsofind other like-minded runners to help youtrain towards your goal.www.liss-runners.org.uk

Tri-ing a new approach toexercise in the New Year?Back in September we learnt all about howfun completing a triathlon can be from thePetersfield Triathlon club. Entering the NewYear we thought we’d catch up with themand find out their recommendations forstarting a new exercise regime:

Whether you’re a seasoned triathletelooking to improve your performanceor take on bigger challenges, such as anironman, or planning to embark on yourfirst triathlon you’ll need some sort of planto achieve your goals. Juggling work, homelife, social life and training for the fiveparts of the race - swimming, swim-cycletransition, cycling, cycle-run transition andrunning - takes self-discipline, planningand motivation, especially if you hit minorset backs like winter colds or bad weather.

One of the most effective ways to embarkon a new exercise regime - apart fromallocating time in your diary - is to join aClub. Petersfield Triathlon Club welcomesadult triathletes of all standards frombeginners to members of Team GB AgeGroups. The Club provides coachedtraining sessions and is a great place tomeet training buddies and glean valuabletips. Finding someone to train with is areally powerful motivator ... no-one likesletting a friend down just because it’sraining. The Brownlee brothers didn’t get towin Olympic medals by deciding it was toocold and wet to train.

petersfield museum

Life in Petersfield has previously featuredTracey Richardson, a Petersfield residentand business woman, who became oneof approximately 70,000 volunteers givingup their spare time to make the LondonOlympic and Paralympic Games a greatsuccess. Now Tracey has decided to donateone of her Games Maker’s uniforms toPetersfield Museum.

Tracey said, “I still wear my uniformwhen giving inspirational talks about myexperience, the rewards of volunteering ingeneral and the valuable business learningsfrom being at the heart of London 2012. Butknowing the Museum had an exhibition thisyear featuring links from the town to theOlympics, I was keen to leave the memoryof my fantastic time as a Games Makerin the archive for display until next timeLondon has the Games!”

Museums do not just collect any ‘old stuff’.Each museum has a collections policy thatdefines what types of artefacts it acquiresand what time period and geographicalarea it covers. Petersfield Museum collectspapers, photographs, memories (in theform of recorded interviews) and objectsthat document the history of the town andits surrounding villages from the earliestof times. The geographic area is defined

by the other museums in thecounty aiming to avoid severalorganisations competing for thesame things. Artefacts rangefrom ancient pottery fragmentsto old shop signs. Moreover, themuseum, which encompassesthe Flora Twort Gallery, owns acollection of about 1,000 worksby Flora Twort, and the Bedalescollection of historic costumesand textiles: close to 1,000items, including shoes andaccessories.

As part of the PetersfieldMuseum textile collection, Tracey’sGames Maker outfit will representsportswear made from light syntheticfabrics as they are produced in the 21stcentury. Since the museum’s current focus ison building up its social history collection, the fact that her outfit illustrates a crucialmoment in recent sporting history is evenmore important. Together with a line ofbunting that adorned the streets for theOlympic torch relay and was recentlyadded to our collections, it stands for theconnection between the town and a majorinternational event. Moreover, it documentsthe spirit of volunteering, a great British

tradition, the benefits of which havebecome particularly evident in theseGames. A bonus is that Tracey has notonly donated her outfit, but also a series ofdocuments that illustrate her experience. An object can be of interest on its own, butit is even more valuable to a museum whenit comes with a personal story attached.

To read all about Tracey’s GamesMakerjourney and book her to talk to your class, business or group visit her website atwww.ampersand-ltd.co.uk

Petersfield, which dates back to the middle ages, derived its name from a distortion of the words St Peter’sFeld. A feld was an area of open land devoid of trees. In the early 12th century a church was built which wasdedicated to St. Peter and used as the location for a new market by the landowner the Earl of Gloucester todraw in merchants and traders and encourage the development of houses. Petersfield was born.

During the early part of the 20th century the pop-ulation had grown rapidly to approximately 4000people. The close proximity of the railway station, which connected Petersfield to both London andPortsmouth in 1859 and later to Midhurst, madethe location ideal for John’s new business.

Urquharts served the local community bytransporting goods and produce from the localfarmers to market, moving cattle and livestocktraded at the Taro Fair and providing onwardtransport for merchandise arriving at the railwaystation from London and the docks at Portsmouth.Urquharts grew both in size and notoriety.

In the early 1930s during the great depressionwhen unemployment had reached three and a halfmillion, profits from the once popular haulage tradewere declining. Thankfully, the industrial areas andcoal mining districts in the North were hardest hitwith London and the South East of England beingless hurt, however, steps were taken to developUrquharts workshop facilities which had alwaysoperated in the shadows of the haulage business.During the 1930s an industry that prospered wasthe motor industry. It was dominated primarilyby Austin Morris and Ford. The amount of cars onBritish roads doubled in the decade.

Reacting to this boom, Urquhartschanged direction again andby the mid 1940’s had becomePetersfield first Vauxhall BedfordDealership. This was a new andexciting time for the Urquhartfamily and soon they wereexpanding their thriving business.A new purpose built workshopwas erected in the 1950’s on whatis now the Petersfield TradingEstate, having the main serviceroads named after its franchise,Vauxhall Way and BedfordRoad. This new site served ascoachbuilder, paint shop, bodyshop and commercial vehicleworkshop.

John’s son Murray, having taken over the business from his father, developed the business further. Throughoutthe 60s and 70s a new office complex and commercial vehicle workshop were built. This new workshop wasconstructed to meet the ever changing legislation in vehicle inspection.

Owning garages in Ropley, Bishops Walthamand Alton, Murray and his brother John, who had returned from the Navy, decidedto consolidate their Company by selling the-se garages and transferring some valuedmembers of staff to the larger premises onVauxhall Way.

One such staff member was John Churchouse, nicknamed Curly who started with theCompany in 1957 and worked for both Murrayand his son Gordon. Curly, having witnessedmany changes, retired in 2002 with over 45years service.

One huge change was the demise of the Bedford truck. Production started in 1931 in Luton and until thedesign of the Q series they were simply a rework of Chevrolet Vehicles. Vauxhall opened its impressive newBedford plant in Dunstable in 1942 and become a major supplier to the army during World War II. However, during the 1980s Bedford failed to win a UK Ministry of Defence contract, losing out to Leyland who laterbecame Leyland Daf. This was a major blow for Bedford and the brand ceased at the end of the 1980s.

The demise of Bedford meant that Urquharts facedsome challenging times ahead and in 1982 they soldtheir Station Road site, now Whiterose Petersfield, and moved their whole operation to Vauxhall Way.

This was the catalyst for Urquharts tenderingsuccessfully for a vehicle maintenance contract withthe Ministry of Defence, who at the time still retainedand used many Bedford trucks. This is a contractstill held today 22 years later by Petersfield GarageServices, the new name for Urquharts.

In late 2012 Petersfield Garage Servicesbecame an elite Bosch Car Service Centre, oneof 600 in the country, offering manufacturelevel diagnostic facilities and working to astrict code of practice to provide a high qualityservice and peace of mind motoring.

After 90 years of serving the community, westill strive to give an unmatched quality servicethrough our numerous onsite facilities.

Old Scottish oatcakes, The Natural Apothecary

Scottish “ice cream”A unique recipe for “warm” ice cream

Whiskey dark treacle and ginger ice cream:For the base mix:3 yolks70g Sugar300ml whipping cream

To flavour:A shot of whiskey –about 30mlA spoon of Treacle syrupHandful of chopped crystallized ginger

Place the cream in a saucepan and gentlybring to a near boil. The pan should be bigenough to contain all of your ingredients.

Meanwhile in a bowl mix the sugar andyolks, again this bowl should be big enoughto contain all the ingredients.

When the cream is simmering pour asmall quantity into the sugar/yolks and mixwell keep adding the cream and mixing.

Pour the mixture back into the pan andgently warm up for couple of a minutesuntil it slightly thickens, it should not cometo the boil or it would turn into an omelette!

Strain the mix and chill it for four hours– kept chilled it is safe to use for 48 hours.Smile! The difficult bit is behind you …

When ready turn the ice cream mix, whiskey and treacle into the ice cream base– you can adjust quantities slightly to suit

your personal taste but too much sugarsor alcohol will stop the ice cream fromfreezing.

Put the mix into your ice cream machineand follow manufacture instructions.

When ready scoop out into a suitablecontainer and swiftly mix in the ginger.

gardening

For most of us the festive season islikely to have involved rather moresitting down and lounging aboutthan usual and probably a few morecalories than usual too. So why not usethe first few months of the gardeningNew Year to put some of that sedentaryindulgence behind you (not literally!)There really is nothing like somegentle, or not so gentle, gardening towake us all up a bit!

Remember that salt used to keep drivesand paths ice free in cold weather couldprove lethal if it contaminates the gardensoil around the roots of plants nearby. Useit sparingly and with care, less rather thanmore is always the best option and it’llprobably save you a fortune too.

Always try to avoid walking on frost-covered lawns or grassed areas as this cando untold damage. As frosts or snow hitlawn grasses they are easily crushed orbroken when hit by passing feet and theythen become more prone to diseases later

in the year.I’m a self-confessed sweet-pea addict,

so continue to make sowings of thesesummery delights to bring colour, eleganceand fabulous perfume to your garden laterthis year. Remember to allow enough plantsso that you have some to grow up runnerbean wig-wams where they will not onlylook gorgeous, but also help to bring inplenty of pollinators for a good set of beans.

It may be too cold for most vegetablesyet, but don’t forget that if you’d like tomaximise your chances of getting a goodcrop from your vegetable plot this year, youcan order garden-ready vegetable plantsfrom me at www.pippagreenwood.com andthen, each week you’ll receive an email fullof advice and tips from me, tailor made tothe crops you’ve selected, from pre-plantingadvice right through to harvest.

Use canes to mark out areas where bulbfoliage is starting to come through the lawnor other grassed areas. This should help tominimise damage form passing feet. I use

canes combined with string, twine or baler-twine to ‘fence off’ emerging bulb shootsand so, hopefully prevent people fromwalking on them, and delivery vans fromrunning them over!

In flowerbeds and borders as bulb foliagestarts to appear gently fork over the soilsurface to break up compaction that couldinhibit the shoots as they try to grow. This isespecially useful if the soil has developed a‘cap’ after being subjected to heavy rainfall,or other compaction.

Prune ornamental vines such as Vitiscoignetiae – if you leave it too much laterthey may well ‘bleed’ or produce vastquantities of sap, so weakening them in theprocess.

If ponds have become frozen over, don’tsuccumb to temptation and smash the iceas if any fish, newts or other critters live inthe water they can be damaged - insteadensure they have sufficient oxygen bymelting a hole in the surface ice using a panof very hot water held on the ice.

If you are reading this it means the 5000 yearold Mayan prophecy, that the world would endon 21 December 2012, was incorrect. In turnthis means that we at Cox Manning areworking to process accounts and tax returns tomeet the tax filing deadline. January tends tobe our busiest time of the year but we still findtime to help our clients organise their finances. Many clients find it difficult to predict theirtotal income for the current tax year and byhelping them with their predictions we areoften able to reduce the tax they need to pay atthe end of January.

Predictions are an important part of our life.Helping our clients produce cash flowpredictions to aid their bank managers approverequests for finance; predicting the level of taxbills in good time so money can be put to oneside; predicting the level of income someonewill receive after they retire and, perhaps moreimportantly, helping them to predict the levelof their outgoings. After the Chancellor’sBudget Statement we are quick to predict howthe proposed changes will affect eachindividual client’s circumstances – and weupdate those predictions as proposals becomelaw or the Government does a U-turn.

We pride ourselves on looking to the future, keeping ahead of changes and helping clientsto predict their future. If you would like us tohelp with your predictions then please get intouch.

The Rogers family, owners of SouthDowns Care, celebrated 20 years of

running care homes for the elderly inPetersfield and Stroud last weekend.

Parties were held in both Downs Houseand Stroud House to mark this milestone, with a sumptuous buffet lunch andmusical entertainers getting everyone’s toestapping with some Residents getting up toshow the younger generation that they havestill got their dancing feet.

The Rogers family came to Petersfieldwhen they bought Downs House, 20 years

ago and were at the forefront of introducingmore fulfilling lives to the Residents intheir care. Having looked at many homeswhere the basic care was provided butlittle else, they were determined that theirhomes would not only provide first classcare, but also more fulfilling lifestyles totheir Residents, with a range of activitiesdesigned to stimulate the body and mind, whatever their age or frailty.

Paul Rogers who originally started thebusiness with his Mother, a nurse withmore than 30 years experience, commented“It has been quite a journey, we have seenfour different Inspection Agencies, two Actsof Parliament and mountains of regulationsdesigned to improve care, but the coreprincipals of first class care remain thesame and this can only be achieved with adedicated caring and committed staff teamthat share your vision and we have beenvery fortunate to have a great team, manyof whom have been with us from the veryearly days”

Little did Mrs Rogers know when theystarted that she was helping create afriendly welcoming environment that shewould eventually benefit from, when dueto failing health she moved in as a Resident, but at least she can still keep an eye onthe family and make sure they continue tomeet the high standards of care she set out.
