GOOD afternoon to everyone attending today’s match at Love Lane, including the players, officials and sup-porters from Horndean and the match officials.

As many of you have read elsewhere, the FA are recommending that we receive Grade E status for the Love Lane Stadium and therefore our ground will be able to stage step four football next season – if we win promotion on the pitch.

I have to thank everyone who was involved in mak-ing sure our home made the required standard. It has taken a lot of long hours and a lot of money and sup-port from several organisations to reach the point we have with our facilities.

It seems like a very long time ago now back in October when I filled in the paperwork to lodge our application to go up to the Southern or Ryman League for next season but it triggered five months of very hard work which I’m pleased to report culminated in a successful outcome for the club.

I would like to thank East Hampshire District Council, the Hampshire Playing Fields Association and Hampshire FA for their considerable support for our ground grading work – without their advice and finan-cial support, none of this would have been possible.

For you, our loyal supporters, it means we now have a range of new facilities which will improve your matchday experience at Love Lane.

We have a new terrace stand and seating area on the north side of the ground, new outside catering facilities, new toilets and vastly improved floodlights.

This is the first step in a whole host of improve-ments coming up around Love Lane and another sign of the forward momentum being enjoyed by the club.

MANAGER’S notes

I’D LIKE to welcome Horndean to Love Lane for this afternoon’s Wessex League Premier Division encounter.

Anything can happen in local derby matches so we will certainly be making sure we get ourselves prepared for this afternoon’s game in the correct manner.

We played Horndean at Five Heads Park just after Christmas and it was the start of a very tough run of games for us.

On that particular day Horndean gave us a very tough match and I expect to get no less from them this after-noon.

On that occa-sion Warren Hunt got the only goal and it helped to set us up for the run of games we had against the sides at the top of the table through January.

It was excellent news to hear that Love Lane passed its ground grading criteria for step four football last week.

A lot of hours were put into ensuring we met the required standard for facilities and

I would like to thank all of those who worked so hard to ensure we passed.

It is the first big tick in the box for us in terms of where we are looking to take this club and now we must complete what we have started on the pitch.

We may be top of the table and in two cup finals but it will all count for nothing in a month’s time if we don’t go on and

achieve the things we want to.We are firmly focussed on to-

day’s match and we are not wor-ried about what is happening elsewhere or all the different permiatations. We know we now need to win two games of football to win the league title and that is where our concentration is.

I was pleased with the 3-0 victory at Verwood on Satur-day. To be 2-0 up after only

12 minutes really easied any pressure we could

have been under and it went on to

be a relatively comfortable afternoon for us in the end.

Keep up your fantastic support.

All the best.

Sus

All we’re interested in is what happens in this game and getting three points

atsBook your tickets for end

of season presentationsPETERSFIELD Town’s end of season presentation evening will now be taking place on Friday, May 22.

The event was originially planned for May 16 but had to be moved to its new date to avoid a clash with the Wessex League’s annual presentation evening.

This year’s event is returning to the Half Moon pub in Sheet and it promises to be a special evening to cap what has been another historic season for the Rams.

Trophies will be handed out to the first team, reserves and youth team during the event, which is run every year to mark the achievements of the individual teams and the club.

Everyone is welcome to attend – play-ers, sponsors, team management, com-mittee members, supporters, friends and family – for what promises to be another special evening for the club.

Tickets cost £25 per person and in-clude a three course meal, disco and the presentation ceremony.

Full details and booking forms are now available from the bar in the Love Lane clubhouse or via the club’s website at: www.petersfieldtownfc.co.uk

The event is being co-ordinated by first team coach Jason Mann and all booking forms and payments for tickets need to be with him by April 11 to confirm your attendance at this event.

WLC

HORNDEAN FC was formed in 1887. The first recorded game was played on October 19 of that year against Red Star of Havant, which Red Star won 1-0.

Until World War One all matches were friendlies and on one occasion the game was controlled by two umpires, one in each half of the field.

Shortly after the war, the club joined the Waterlooville and District League and it was not until the 1926-27 season, when the club was reformed, that it won the league title.

Further successes followed in 1930, 1931 and 1932, winning the trophies outright together with the local cup.

During the 1931-32 season Frank Bryson scored 83 goals, and during his time at Horndean he scored a total of 384. Both records remain to this day.

In the early days the club played on a pitch at Blendworth Hill, on ground be-hind the old workhouse opposite what is now the Colonial Bar, and later in a field behind the Brewers Arms in Five Heads Road and the pub was used for commit-tee meetings.

The original clubhouse was opened in 1948 having been built by club members and supporters on land donated by Harry Heath, whose family have continued to support the club to this day.

Horndean entered the Portsmouth League and in the 1953-54 season they won the division 2 title.

Mr AJ Rowe put together a success-ful youth team and in 1961-62 they won every game scoring 125 goals with only 15 against.

Many of these players graduated to the first team and gained promotion to the Premier Division, and after winning the

Premier title for three seasons running in 1969, 1970 and 1971, the Deans were accepted into the Hampshire League Division 4 in 1972.

In 1979-80 they won the double, which included the Portsmouth Senior Cup played at Fratton Park. In 1986 Horndean joined the newly formed Wessex League.

The clubhouse was rebuilt by Terry Cannon in 1987 after the infamous hur-ricane destroyed the old building. The dressing rooms and team room building was also built by Terry in August 1988.

In June 2008 the management team of Denmead and Purbrook took over the running of trouble stricken Horndean FC which was established over 121 years ago – making the club older than Ports-mouth Football Club.

The management committee have plans to grow the club membership and develop the facilities so they are used more often. They want to encourage the youth element so there is a natural pro-gression through the stages from youth to adult football.

To date Horndean have five adult men’s teams and a ladies side. This is complemented by a new youth policy which is the start of the club’s future.

Top priority is to stabilise the finances of the club and ensure survival in the Wessex League top flight which Horn-dean has been a part of for many years.

This is new territory for the club’s current committee and those involved in the club and it has been a steep learning curve.

Officials have asked supporters to bear with them as their support is needed in helping the club to survive in the man-ner Mrs Berry would have expected.

Horndean are putting building blocks in place for their future

Hamworthy United 2Petersfield Town 2

THE RAMS had to come from behind twice to earn a share of the spoils at Hamworthy.

The Dorset side have proven to be a thorn in Petersfield’s side this season by holding the high-flying Rams to draws in both league games.

It could easily have been 3-3 or 4-4 at half time as both sides were creating chances at will throughout the first half.

Hamworthy had the first chance after just three minutes when a free kick from the right was half cleared to the edge of the box to Dan Smith. His low shot was missed by two team mates who at-tempted to turn it on target and the ball eventually rolled wide of the far post.

Petersfield went close a minute later when Andy Todd got clear of the home defence but he only managed to get a shot off from four yards out and that was straight at keeper Gerard Benfield.

Three minutes later and the home side went closer still. A corner was flicked back across goal to Smith who looked like he was about to turn the ball home until the Petersfield defence managed to divert it behind for another corner. From this corner on the right the ball found Kane Daysh whose free header had to be cleared off the line.

Daysh thought he had scored from the next corner on 12 minutes when his free header beat keeper Matt Shortt but thun-dered back into play off the crossbar.

The Rams should have been on the scoresheet two minutes later when Todd latched on to a through ball on the right and drove into the penalty area. His shot went straight at Benfield who managed to

keep the ball out but from no more than two yards out Robbie Tambling’s attempt to bundle the rebound over the line was clawed away by Benfield.

Hamworthy had another good chance on 38 minutes when Jack Saterly picked up a loose ball in midfield and raced to-wards goal but his shot from the edge of the box ended up going five yards wide.

Disaster struck for the Rams a minute before the interval when they gifted Hamworthy the lead. Shortt was making what looked like a routine clearance but he miss-hit the ball straight to Josh Rose. From 30 yards out the home striker hit his first time shot back past the stranded Shortt, who managed to get a hand to the ball but it still dropped into the net.

However, the Rams made the per-fect start to the second half when they drew level on 48 minutes. Tambling was brought down as he ran along the top of the penalty area and Sean Wain sent Benfield the wrong way with his spot kick.

Poor defending allowed the home side to take the lead again on 63 minutes. Hamworthy won possession on the right wing and sent a player clear of the Rams defence. The cross from the right was inch perfect as it found the head of Smith, who thumped the ball home from close range.

Petersfield boss Ian Saunders decided to shuffle his pack with a double substitu-tion, bringing on Alex Lowley and Jordan Neal, and the move proved to be the right one when his side drew level again on 69 minutes. Good play down the right hand side saw Lewis Hyde put Dan Woodward clear into space and his ball into the box dropped into the path of Neal, who lifted his shot over the keeper and into the net.

Hamworthy hold Petersfield to draw for the second time

RETRO rams

EVERY programme this season will fea-ture a story from the files of the Peters-field Post – Petersfield Town FC’s official media partner.

The Easter weekend is always a busy period for matches with Easter Monday providing a Bank Holiday where a second game in three days can be played.

This was the case for Petersfield in 1990, with the Post reporting on three matches they had played inside a week.

The picture above shows Neil Darnley (left) in action for the Rams against Maid-enhead United – a game Petersfield lost 4-0 on a Wednesday night.

Manager Richie Reynolds fielded new signing Gavin Barclay from Gosport Bor-ough but his side went behind after five minutes thanks to a goal from Muir.

Keeper Patrick Robinson fumbled

Muir’s shot into his own net for the sec-ond and Mooney made it 3-0 just before half time. Boucher completed the scoring during the second half.

On the Saturday, Petersfield were beaten 4-0 again – this time at Southall.

The home side took the lead through Pennock on 16 minutes and Fraser completed a hat-trick in the second half as the Rams were well beaten.

Petersfield United did, however, break their losing run with a 1-0 victory over promotion chasing Ruislip Manor on the Monday night.

Steve Clapp scored the winner with five minutes remaining after Robinson had made two fine saves in the first half.

Team that night was: Robinson, Shep-pard, Montague, North, Phelps, Jones, Oliver, Porter, Spinks, Webb, Clapp.

Petersfield Town 4Bemerton Heath Harlequins 2

PETERSFIELD Town booked their place in the final of the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup final for the second year running after coming from behind to beat their Wiltshire opponents.

The first half was a scrappy, nervy affair with both sides going close on several occasions to taking the lead. On 11 minutes Dan Woodward was put clear of the Bemerton defence and he tried to beat Max Frampton from 25 yards out but the keeper managed to push the shot wide of the goal. From the corner Woodward glanced his header from close range wide of the target.

Both sides could have scored midway through the first half when first Bemer-ton had a chance when Ash Howes and Jamie Ford failed to deal with the ball on the edge of the box and Tom Moseley broke into the area but Matt Shortt man-aged to block his close range shot.

The Rams then went straight down the other end and the ball was passed down the right hand side of the penalty area to Tambling and his low shot beat the keeper but hit the outside of the post.

Petersfield went close again after a quick throw in on the left and Ed Dryden managed to get a shot off through a crowd of players but Frampton dived to his left to turn the ball around the post.

Scott Joyce then got into a good posi-tion inside the box but Ford blocked his shot and at the other end Danny Thomp-son had two efforts on goal cleared off the line as a scramble developed.

Tambling thought he had tucked away the rebound but Frampton threw him-self to his left to somehow turn the ball

around the post with a miraculous save.Bemerton finally took the lead four

minutes into the second half when a free kick from the right found captain Graham Mankin at the far post and he headed home off the underside of the crossbar.

However, two minutes later the Rams were back on level terms when Tambling raced clear through the middle of the Bemerton defence before firing low past Frampton and inside his near post.

Bemerton almost retook the lead on 67 minutes when Joyce found space in the six yard box to shoot but Shortt managed to get down quickly to push his shot away to safety.

Petersfield took the lead for the first time in the match on 72 minutes when Howes picked up the ball in the middle of the pitch and managed to flick it past three challenges before unleashing a dipping shot from 25 yards out which flew past Frampton and into the net.

The Rams got their third goal three minutes later when Tambling flicked the ball on to substitute Jake Slater in the penalty area. He tried to get the ball under control but it bounced up into the path of Tambling, who had continued his run, and he smashed his shot into the top corner of the net from 12 yards out.

Bemerton managed to pull a goal back with 12 minutes remaining when the ref-eree judged that Seb Dawes was fouled in the box and awarded them a penalty. Mankin sent Shortt the wrong way with his low spot kick.

The Rams scored again with two min-utes remaining. Howes picked up the ball in midfield and slipped the perfect pass to Slater on the edge of the area and he shot low past Frampton to make it 4-2.
