Toastmasters is a program in which you learn

public speaking by watching others and doing it

yourself. I like Toastmasters because it tests me in

a way that’s not “what’s the answer to 5x + 6”!

It’s interactive with real people asking you

questions and guiding you through the world of

public speaking.

Competitive Communicators differs in many ways

from face-to-face Toastmasters:

1. First, you usually don’t have to worry

about unmuting yourself before you

speak!

2. Second, you don’t have to worry about

people looking at you weird because if

you look at the screen you see yourself.

3. Third, you can be anywhere for

Competitive Communicators. You are only

limited by no data zones.

Although I’m not an actual Toastmaster, per se, I can still experience it through

Competitive Communicators, and that’s what I like about Toastmasters. No limits!

MEET, LEARN, SPEAK, READ!

This weekend was the final District 48 Fall Conference. Here are some reflections from this year’s conference.

Kevin Stamper, local pastor and 3rd place winner of the 2017 World Championship of Public Speaking on Speech Craft:

• Don’t speak because you feel like you have to say something. Speak because you have something to say!

• Overcome fear of public speaking by remembering it’s not about you, it’s about sharing your message.

• Many people start their speeches with a small idea, and they add on to it. Instead, start big with lots of ideas and whittle them down until there is nothing else left to take out.

• Every sentence in your speech should point to your overall message.

• Be the “save the cat” character by endearing yourself to your audience.

• Delivery won’t make your speech, but it can break it.

Andrew Bustamante, former CIA agent, founder of the Me Now Movement, and 2017 winner of District 48 Evaluation Contest on Practical Persuasion:

• Persuasion is a practical skill anyone can learn.

• Persuasion is the act of getting someone to do or believe what you want them to do or believe.

• Do is a “hip urge” and believe is a “heart urge”.

• Fundamental appeals for hip urges are: reward, ideology, coercion and ego.

• Fundamental appeals for heart urges are: listening, relating, observing and controlling the perception.

Do It Yourself Toastmasters Cards

Use the Toastmasters business card template to make your own Toastmasters branded cards! Get the template.

“I used Avery 8-cards per sheet Clean Edge Matte White Business Card stock (8869) for Inkjet and adapted the Toastmasters template which is designed for 10-cards per sheet. The result is very professional in appearance, and an easy way to promote my love of Toastmasters. I handed out plenty of them at the District 48 Fall Conference.” - Evie Alexander
