Owning a home is the same in any language. Buying a home is different in every language.

In January, a group of about fifty new members of the Bowling Green community met to discuss the process of buying a home. They were hosted by the Association of Rescue and Intervention of Kentucky (ARIKY). This organization was formed by refugees to help other non-English speaking new comers adapt to life in Bowling Green and in 2015, they received a neighborhood grant called SNAP which is managed by the city to make Bowling Green a better place for all.

As the administrator of the SNAP Grant program, Karen Foley is responsible for insuring that the money is well spent. She said the ARIKY event was important for several reasons.

She says homeowners have an incentive to protect their investments, and refugees

in particular see opportunities that others may have overlooked.

But the broader implication for SNAP participants is the benefit of a shared

mission. Grassroots efforts can bring people together for a common goal, and simply by organizing and focusing on a particular outcome, Foley says the group is strengthened.

“Getting started is the hardest part,” says Foley. She has been in her position since 1999 and views the grant as an incubator. With SNAP monies,

neighborhood groups can identify a mission, build momentum, gain credibility, and connect with the people who can help accomplish the goal.

ARIKY’s January event hosted Laurent Houekpon, an analyst with the Kentucky Housing Corporation. He shared his personal history of coming to the United States and trying to navigate the various government agencies to get things done. He encouraged the group to focus on building and understanding good credit so that they will be in a position to buy homes and open businesses.

Bowling Green realtor, Gabby Springs, volunteered her time to help file the documents necessary to view a credit report. Springs says it was a two-way street. She wanted to help newcomers, but she also wanted to better understand the needs of potential homebuyers who may not be familiar with American real

estate practices. WKU photojournalism students were

on hand to capture the images and record the event so that even people who were not able to attend can go online to learn more. Houekpon said he was impressed by the turnout and especially by what he referred to as “parking lot questions” which came at the end of the day and reflected a good understanding of how to start building credit.

Some members of the refugee community in Bowling Green have already made the leap from renter to home owner. ARIKY Board Member M’munga Ramadhani for example, just moved his large family into a new home of their own. He says the responsibility of homeownership will be shared across the board when his children enter the workforce. As Ramadhani points out, the investment in owning a home will

ultimately benefit his entire family.“It was a big responsibility,” he says.

“But it’s a good responsibility.” Initially the realtor showed him

older homes, but eventually they were able to purchase a newer home in a newer neighborhood. And while the closing costs, mortgage payments and homeowner’s insurance may be an intimidating prospect for some, Ramadhani appreciates being able to build equity, rather than pay rent. And he says his utility bills for one, have dropped considerably because his new home is better insulated and better built than his rental home was. He says his electricity bill had been as much as 400 dollars at his rental home, but in his new home, even during the cold January weather, his bill was less than 200 dollars.

The Magic of Chalk Paint

DESIGN

Even through the late January blizzard, I am already anticipating the change to spring. Each season of the year is a blessing. I enjoy all four seasons, but mostly, I look forward to the change that each one represents. When the Christmas decorations are finally all stashed away, suddenly the house feels a bit bare, and I become excited to start on new projects for a new season.

Several of the projects I have in mind include the use of chalk paint.

You’ve probably already seen chalk paint. It has grown in popularity over the last few years. If you are on Pinterest or have been in a craft store or even some of the big-box hardware stores lately, you may have come across those little cans called chalky-finish, chalk décor paint or something of the like. There are many different brands now, but my favorite continues to be Annie

Sloan Chalk Paint. She is the queen of chalk paint, and “Stockists” who adhere to her teaching methods and sell the brand can now be found all over the world. Thanks to these techniques, it is now super easy to get an expensive-looking painted finish without the expensive price.

Before the holidays, we picked up an old desk off Craigslist that is about to get a makeover along with our guest room side table. I also have a couple more of our dining chairs to finish—a project I started back when it was still 85 degrees outside.

When discussing chalk paint with a newbie, the obvious question almost always comes up: “It is the same as chalkboard paint, right?” Wrong. Well, kind of. Chalk paint is chalk-based paint, not latex or oil based. It can be used to create a chalkboard surface if you paint three coats, sand it smooth without waxing it and season it with chalk. I actually did that with an old calendar

Page 15: Toas ToasTTing 2016 in a ing 2016 in a nnew Homeew Homebloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/bgdailynews.com/... · 2016. 2. 11. · “Getting started is the hardest part,” says

Chalk paint is an affordable way to update a look. Here, Fish used paint and oil for a lustrous shine. she paired the ensemble with two different colors for dramatic effect.

Chalk paint and chalkboards are the perfect companions. The process involves adding layers of paint, but ultimately functions as the ideal place to leave a note or take a note.

holder that now hangs in my kitchen as a menu board. However, the wonders of this paint go much further than chalkboards! Chalk paint can take any drab piece of anything; a dated dresser, an old glass jar, or even a brass picture frame, and make it new. It can adhere to almost any surface without stripping or sanding.

It is super easy to use and can cover many things in one or two coats, if you know a few simple tricks. First, consistency is everything. The nature of chalk paint is that it is actually chalky and like a watered-down plaster. Actually, there are many recipes in the Google realm that mix latex paint with plaster of paris to get the chalk paint effect, though this hasn’t always worked for me, and it seems to lack durability because the latex still eventually can peel. The chalk paint should be free-flowing off your brush. If it starts to thicken, add a bit of water and stir it well. All of the good stuff settles, so always stir up from the bottom. Second, sand! I know I said no sanding required, but if you use fine-grit sandpaper like 220 grit or a sanding sponge over your top coat, you will get a wonderfully smooth finish. You can also use sandpaper or a wet rag to rub around the corners and

edges if you like a distressed look. I finish most of my projects with a clear

wax. Buff on, and then buff to a sheen. If you visit your local supplier, he or she can show you some additional tools to make the process easier, though an old T-shirt rag works just fine.

You may initially be put off by the price; it can be around $36 for a quart. But be assured that it will go really far. I painted all of our kitchen cabinets in our old house with one quart. I painted three dressers and two beds with another quart. That is a bargain for like-new furniture!

For a DIY girl like me who loves a quick change, chalk paint can’t be beat.

Americans love to remodel. From small spruce-ups to total home makeovers, television networks run 24 hours a day with shows featuring remodels. Magazines, websites and blogs feature happy homeowners gushing over perfect room makeovers. And with the continuing challenging economy, more homeowners have decided to stay in their current home longer, which has created higher demand for remodeling.

remodeling project.

Bathroom and kitchen remodeling remain the two most common types of jobs, as they have been consistently since 2001. Homeowners are frequently asking for a high-end spa feel to their new bathrooms, with features and materials such as television screens built into mirrors, exotic wood finishes, recycled glass tiles and sophisticated lighting systems.

Other popular features include elements of Universal Living. Things such as step-in tubs, shower stall benches and strategically placed railings allow older people to stay in their homes. Window and door replacements, room additions and whole-house remodeling are also popular. And now, outdoor living tops the list for additions to homes and new construction. Whether you are looking for a simple patio or outdoor kitchen, there are many products to meet your needs.

The first step is to develop an idea of what you want to do with your home remodel. Write a prioritized list of your needs and wants. Look at magazines and websites and collect pictures of projects you like. The more clearly you can envision the project and describe it on paper, the better prepared you'll be in making your decision.

Think about traffic patterns, furniture size and placement, colors, lighting and how you expect to use the remodeled space. If your decision to remodel involves creating better access for someone with limited mobility, you may want to consider making sure your contractor has

VIEWPOINT

Q: Tim, We are having difficulty understanding the difference between a trained professional builder who builds high-performance homes and a builder who just builds to minimum codes. Would you help us understand the difference?

A: There’s a common but flawed perception that older homes are more durable than modern high-performance homes, with fewer mold and moisture problems. While it’s true that some newer homes have had well-publicized mold and durability issues, they are by no means indicative of the results a high-performance builder can deliver. These moldy, decaying homes do share a common denominator, however. They were built by people who didn’t understand how to properly use modern building materials and construction practices. That takes an educated professional builder committed to delivering high-quality homes that stand the test of time.

The following information will help us define high-performance for purposes of this article. A high-performance enclosure is a sound structure that effectively addresses four key attributes: energy efficiency, interior moisture management, weather protection, and health.

Energy efficiency: Every month, a crystal-clear metric in the form of the utility bill shows homebuyers how well a builder addresses efficiency. High bills are not good for homeowners, and ultra-low or non-existent ones are great. In addition to utility costs, high-performance homes are comfortable throughout. They eliminate the warm

or cold spots typically found in older or code-minimum housing stock. Thus, the better the home performs, the happier the owner.

Interior moisture management: High-performance builders know how to craft an efficient wall system that can handle the large amount of moisture put into the home’s air by a typical family from activities such as cooking and showering. These builders also understand that drying potential is as important as moisture resistance and that wall systems must be optimized for the local climate. For instance, if any of that airborne moisture works its way into a wall, it needs to dry primarily to the outside in a heating climate but to the inside in a cooling climate. The educated pro knows how to make sure that happens properly without fail.

Weather protection: This is a big one. A code-minimum home can have enormous wetting potential with nearly no drying potential. The result is rot and decay that can begin as early as three to five years after the home is built. A high-performance home will incorporate comprehensive moisture protection systems. The result is an owner who can enjoy his or her new home for many years to come without the burden of repairs after a few short years.

Health: According to recent news reports, nearly 7  million emergency

room visits are for respiratory disorders, and approximately 1 in 10 children uses an inhaler. In other words, respiratory problems clearly appear to be rising. High-performance homes address this issue by incorporating energy recovery ventilation (ERV) systems that ensure that the air inside the home remains fresh and healthy.

The bottom line is to build the home so that its structure stays dry no matter how wet the weather or how many long, steamy showers the occupants take. In years past, builders and designers could get by without much knowledge of building science. That is no longer the case. Does your builder understand this? If not, consider hiring a high-performance builder capable of building a home that you and your family will enjoy for many years to come.

Happy Homeowners Live in High-performance Homes

Take Your Neighbor to Basketball Court

When builders break ground, they don’t know exactly what will happen—but they know what they want. And when Johnston Boyd began work on Traditions at Lovers Lane, he wanted a diverse New Urban landscape that would appeal to a range of people.

But they all had to have one thing in common.

Boyd builds homes for people who want to get to know their neighbors.

Sidewalks, parks and front porches are

Bead board ceiling on the porch, Hardie Board® siding (in Heather Moss), cedar shake and Craftsman styling give this home in the Magnolia District its distinctive voice.

The palette of soft greys and hardwood captured their imagination before they could even make it out of the foyer.

Cheers to you! The new homeowners will use the flex space in front for a formal dining room.

The gourmet kitchen features custom finishes. For the Parade, the home was staged by Coomer & Co., with furniture from BG Home Furnishings.

essential components of the Traditions landscape, and the idea is to facilitate an open exchange with people in the immediate vicinity.

Boyd showcased two newly built homes in the Magnolia District during the 2015 Parade.

The Magnolia District features single-family homes with fenced yards, high ceilings, distinctive architectural details and maintenance-free landscaping. Easy access to the development’s main meeting place—its community clubhouse, pool, picnic tables and fire pits—means there are no excuses not to get to know each other.

But Stan and Tonya Whitney missed the Parade of Homes because they were on a mission of their own.

For the past several years, the Whitney family had been living out of boxes, unable to completely unpack. They were dividing their time between points as far north

as Davenport, Iowa, and as far south as Franklin, Tennessee. But when it came time to buy and with friends and extended family in and around south central Kentucky, Bowling Green was the ideal location. So when their Realtor stopped at 664 Boston Park Drive, their search came to an end.

They had looked at almost two-dozen homes, but, explains Tonya, “We walked in this house, and I don’t even know that I got past the front hallway.” It was love at first sight.

During construction, Boyd had worked directly with interior designer Tara Coomer of Coomer & Co. to select architectural details that would be both classic and sublime. A pair of sliding barn doors was

the main attraction that captured Tonya’s imagination from the moment she walked in, but there was much more to come.

She loved the color palette of soft gray tones and contrasting white trim. She loved the distinctive lighting and the gourmet kitchen. She loved the high ceilings and the durable engineered hardwood floors. The kitchen pantry, the mudroom and the fenced backyard were the very features Boyd had hoped that somebody would appreciate, and there was no doubt that the Whitney family fit the bill.

Stan is a tall guy, and he appreciates the fact that both downstairs and up, there are high ceilings in every room. There are three full bathrooms that will help accommodate

Interior designer Tara Coomer of Coomer & Co selected a unique variation on an Edison bulb for the space above the kitchen island.

The mudroom offers a transitional space from the garage to the kitchen. Having spent years living in apartments, the new homeowners love the custom blueprint.

Upstairs, there are four bedrooms including a master suite and a bonus room. The vanity features marble countertops in Sugar Grove Maple, and brushed nickel fixtures. The Shaker style cabinets in an ebony stain are courtesy of Creative Wood Designs.

guests and grown children. But while he tried to account for a specific

lifestyle, there were also elements that Boyd couldn’t have known. A fenced backyard, for example, meant the Whitneys could get a new puppy after Oakley, the family’s yellow Lab, passed away while they were living in Iowa. And Boyd couldn’t have been in on the joke that any good hairdresser would appreciate. The upstairs bathroom offers ideal lighting for taking selfies.

When Boyd specified the built-in bookcase niche in the kitchen, he had no idea that it would become home to Tonya’s collection of Paleo diet cookbooks. He didn’t know she had just converted to a simpler diet and plenty of exercise.

Upstairs, the bonus room is a classic example. No builder wants to pretend to know what will become of this space because it can be used for an extra bedroom, a home office, a rec room or a movie room. In this case, Stan will use it to showcase his collection of rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia, and eventually they will enjoy it even more when they convert the bonus room into a home theater.

But the question remains: Did they buy the house in this New Urban enclave because they want to get to know their neighbors?

"We kind of got spoiled,” Stan admits. After moving around and living in several apartment communities, they became used to the idea of shared amenities and low-maintenance landscaping. Tonya agrees. She liked taking a day off and simply lounging by a pool that she would never have to clean.

But she didn’t particularly like having to haul her bike out of a common storage area every time she wanted to ride, so having her own garage is an inspiration for her new healthy lifestyle. And Traditions offers easy access to the main loop of the Greenways path being built around the city.

“We only came here once, and we made the offer,” says Stan. He insists they moved to Traditions to be closer to friends and family. He loves the house, and he loves the pool and the parks, but if pressed, he admits he has a special fondness for the brand-new basketball courts. He doesn’t use the phrase “shoot around,” and he doesn’t even say he wants to form a like-minded league of middle-aged round-ballers looking to get some exercise. Instead, he uses a single word that essentially means: Game on. He says he wants to, “reestablish” before

correcting himself to say he looks forward to “playing some basketball sometime. They’re nice courts.”

Despite the cold weather and the new neighborhood, the Whitneys have already met some other members of the Traditions community and look forward to spring, when Tonya plans to hit the trails and Stan, a lifelong athlete who defended his home team Hot Rods even in enemy Quad City Bandits territory, might be spending his leisure time looking for a pick up game.

Container World in Bowling Green customized and retrofit a closet space for the master suite. The home’s tall ceilings accommodate two tiered storage, and the new design offers a place for everything and everything in its place.

Eventually the new owners plan to design and build an open-air gazebo on the patio using Sunbrella® fabric panel walls that can be tied up to catch a cool breeze, or left down for more intimate occasions.

STYLE

The beauty of ANN SACKS Designer tiles add drama, beauty and life to your space.

From the ANN SACkS Mosaics collection, these patterns are versatile and creative, offering bold and graphic statements alongside traditional and classic.

There was a time when tile didn’t have much to say. It was bland, it was blah, and it served its dutiful service as a floor covering or as the occasional backsplash. Today’s tile is making a statement and has worked its way to the forefront of modern-day design. It can bring depth, texture and color into what might otherwise be a lackluster space. As style, imagination and design get bolder so do the tiles and the spaces they inhabit.

ANN SACKS was founded in 1981 when the company’s namesake was out shopping for a Mexican wedding dress. Ann herself stumbled upon a beautiful Mexican talavera tile—traditional, brightly colored Mexican earthenware—being sold as a trivet. Inspired by its unique application, she traveled home to Portland, Oregon, and created the foundation for what is now one of the most sought-after tile products. Eventually, ANN SACKS

drew the attention of the Kohler Company, headquartered in Kohler, Wisconsin, garnering Ann Sacks tiles as a subsidiary of Kohler. Together, they produce beautiful products all around the world.

It’s almost impossible to capture in words the designer quality of the intricate pieces that ANN SACKS offers. The tiles cover a range of tastes from classic and timeless to bold and modern. By utilizing tile textures, patterns and colors, you are able to take a blank design canvas and create something personal that breathes life into your home. The collections include hundreds of varieties of ceramic, porcelain and glass tiles as well as a multitude of stone pieces made from marble, limestone and travertine. ANN SACKS designers have also created leather and concrete tiles that offer a dazzling level of sophistication.

The beauty of ANN SACKS

Inspired by designs popular in the 1930s, this striking mosaic application, ”Artiste,” is the pinnacle of sophisticated elegance that translates beautifully today.

Their mosaic tile pieces are incredibly elaborate, artful and capable of stirring human emotions.

Ted Chappell, president at ANN SACKS, says, “ANN SACKS was built on the concept that tile and stone, with its tactile warmth, strength and versatility, is an expressive medium for creating imaginative, emotionally relevant spaces.” Their goal is to create living spaces that are truly living, and they accomplish this by offering some of the most stunning patterns, hues and colors that one can dream up. In fact, ANN SACKS is so committed to pleasing their customer that they offer “custom color matching, custom sizes and custom designs to help make your tile experience perfect.”

Currently, ANN SACKS has 18 showrooms across the United States, Vancouver and London, and they pride themselves on being responsive to their clientele. Chappell says that the design statement ANN SACKS wants to portray to their customers is that their products feature a vast range of styles and an equally wide range of price points. Luxury and sophistication are main features in this MTI freestanding Boutique Series. The

“Intarcia” features a pedestal base, constructed of Engineered Solid Stone—stone all the way through.

Bathrooms are no longer just the room down the hall where you brush your teeth and take a shower. They have evolved over hundreds of years from merely a physical space to cleanse oneself to a Zen-like refuge for relaxation and holistic healing.

There has been a major market upswing for the demand of luxurious master suites and fine piece baths, and Michael Kornowa, director of marketing for MTI Baths, has taken notice. MTI is known for their handcrafted pieces for the bathroom. The bath products in their boutique collection are so striking that they have actually trademarked the baths as art. Kornowa explains, “It looks like art, and yet our mantra is also all about developing top-tiered designs. We are not designing these tubs as art for art’s sake. It’s a bathing vessel that looks beautiful and at the same time delivers comfort and promotes health.”

You can think of them as functional sculptures—lovely to gaze upon and an inviting place for relaxation and revitalization. The sleek lines of MTI’s

signature Engineered Stone baths are a combination of ground natural materials from the earth and binding agents resulting in molded stone, solid through and though. Whether free standing, attached, whirlpool or air jetted, these tubs come in a host of styles and designs ranging from cozy and eclectic to uber-modern.

If space is hard to come by, don’t fret. That does not mean you have to skimp on design and luxury.

Victoria + Albert is a British company known for their line of stunning tubs made from 100  percent volcanic limestone. Their bathroom furniture collection also features a selection of pedestal vanities with basins to create sleek bathroom-ware. Exquisitely designed and with aptly named pieces such as “Stiletto,” this bathroom furniture stands delicately on slim, long legs, perfect for a small space.

In today’s housing market, people are expecting artistry and glamour from their lavatory options. Consumers expect higher-quality pieces with a more spa-like feel than in years past. “The bathroom is now thought of as a place of sanctuary and quiet. The focus on the bathroom has come on very, very strong. In some cases, it is because people want the occasional soak. I think people are looking for that private space to be able to shut the world out for a few minutes,” Kornowa explains.

MTI has a new, innovative way to shut out that busy, bustling world—The Stream Bath. Instead of using jets or bubbles, this new technology utilizes vents to create a flow of water that mimics a babbling brook or a natural stream in the woods.

Peace and calm sooth your body and soul as the gentle currents of water flow against your body in the MTI Stream Bath™. Directional vents provide gentle movement of water created by a whisper-quiet pump.

MTI illustrates its ingenious, innovative new tub thusly: “Imagine the soft sound of flowing water, the gentle current that caresses the body. The essence of that organic experience has been captured and brought into the bathroom as an exceptional hydrotherapy option that is gentle enough for all bathers to enjoy.” The Stream Bath not only offers a unique physical effect on the body but a sensory experience for the mind as well. You can actually hear the relaxing trickling sound of the water like you’d get from a natural spring on a mountainside, offering a soothing form of auditory therapy. Ribbons of water are created, flowing around the body without any disturbances on top of the water. The stream technology is available in most of MTI’s drop-in tubs.

Regardless of whether the tub is a whirlpool, stream or simply a still bath, taking a soak in a purposefully designed bathroom is a wonderful way to free your mind and nurture your soul. Don’t be afraid to create a bold, beautiful and therapeutic bathroom with the tub as a focal point. Relaxing has never looked so good.

Easing out of Winter

Although it should be, soup is rarely on my radar. When planning a last-minute dinner or brown bag lunch, I tend toward really uncreative things, like toast with mustard, until something jogs my faulty memory. Oh yeah, soup—nutritious, filling, perfect for any meal. And hey, you’ve made at least 2 gallons a day for most of your working life. I don’t easily translate cooking at work to help me at home.

Maybe because of this, I am fascinated by those who transition well between commercial kitchens and home settings and integrate a restaurant schedule into a life that involves kids, activities and a semblance of work-life balance.

Sara Watson, of Mosaic Foods and Mezzaluna and Rustica restaurants in Fargo, North Dakota, is a chef who succeeds in all of the aforementioned settings. She and partner in life and work,

Sara Watson mom, wife and chef extraordinaire of Mosaic Foods and Mezzaluna and Rustica restaurants.

Eric, manage to own and run a mini-food empire and still have a home-cooked dinner with family more often than not.

Before the four children, husband and restaurants, Sara was a local girl who first left town to study liberal arts at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. While getting her undergraduate degree in art history, she happily worked in restaurants. Post-college, she decided to attend a three-year apprenticeship program at the Colorado Mountain Culinary Institute, where she met a young chef instructor named Eric Watson. The rest, as they say, is history, and at some point that history moved back to Sara’s home town.

Sara’s no-nonsense approach to home cooking includes judicious use of a slow cooker, good braising technique for hearty winter meals, and keeping it simple but

real for the kids (ages 6 to 16). Always good at recognizing what the customer wants and needs, she advises build-your-own options where kids can choose their own ingredients and knowing when to call in the reserves—take out.

For this easy meal, she used Google in a way that I am embarrassed to admit has never occurred to me. Her search included the ingredients she had in-house (chicken, white beans and kale). An hour later, she had adapted an Italian-style soup recipe, and lunch was ready. While we don’t all have the mad skills to pull a dinner out of our pantry, using the Internet as a well-indexed cookbook is a game-changer.

With Sara’s low-key expertise and tasty results, I will definitely be following her lead. Hearty soup and Google may make this the easiest winter yet.

REFLECTIONS

I’ve always liked makeup. When I was very young, I vividly remember going into my parents’ bedroom and up to my mom’s dressing table. On it were some magical items: a mirror that was on a swivel so that you could rotate it to be a magnifying mirror or regular. It had

The Sparkle Factor

a switch that took the little lights at the top of it from regular to pink to kind of an eerie, pale blue-green. I loved that mirror. Something about watching my face go from normal to big and from “regular” to slightly pink or green—it was so dramatic and immediate.

Hours: Monday - Saturday 10am - 5pm I 1116 Broadway Ave. • 270.781.5550

Beyond this mirror, she also had a kind of square palette of about 24 small squares of magical, sparkling eye shadow. It ran the gamut of the rainbow, starting out with pale pinks and moving through the yellows and oranges and on to the deep greens, blues and purples. They were all like tiny geodes of magnificent color, and I remember gazing at them longingly.

There was a miniature terra-cotta urn filled with loose, sparkling turquoise eye shadow that came out on a stick with a little puff at the end. That was almost more than I could handle with its princess-like beauty. It always had a little explosion of sparkle when you put the wand back in, and I would watch, transfixed, as the shadow settled on top of the dressing table. It was fairy dust, of that I am still fairly certain.

Inside a little drawer lived what were probably my favorite treasures: some necklaces that were secret perfume lockets. There was a plain silver kidney bean on a silky ribbon and a much more elaborately designed broach with a little garnet-colored gem in the middle on a gold chain. Both of these opened up to reveal a creamy perfume that you could run your finger across and apply to your wrists and neck.

These various items weren’t particularly valuable, and most of them haven’t stood the test of time, but they were the finishing touches that I watched my mother use to complete her look in the mid-1970s. They were the details that tied her all together, and they are some of my strongest memories of my preschool years.

Today, I wouldn’t dream of applying sparkling turquoise eye shadow, and I can’t imagine I would want to apply makeup underneath a pale, bluish-green-tinted light, but that corner of my parents’ bedroom holds a sacred place in my memory because it’s where I began to put the pieces together of whom I wanted to be when I grew up. It’s where I realized that “getting ready” had significance and meant that you wanted to present your best self beyond that bedroom door.

Those items represent how we showcase ourselves and how we want to be seen in the world. Actually, maybe a little more magical sparkle would be a good thing.
