lt is common knowledge that recycling is a good and practical thing to incorporate into everyday life. Old cans become new cans, old paper becomes new paper, and old bottles become—chandeliers?
Artist Russ Morgan collects beach glass, beer bottles, glass dishes, cups—any glass items bound for the garbage or garage sale become fair game in creating extraordinary custom chandeliers and light fixtures. What was born of the need for materials on a tight budget is now recognized as “upcycled” art. It is, in essence, recycled materials elevated to a whole other
level. Morgan’s pieces are the epitome of green and glam beautifully fused.
Twenty-some years ago, Morgan was scavenging through the remains of an old house that had been lifted for a new foundation. He stumbled upon a brass chandelier that was missing its crystals. Left with the frame of what used to be, Morgan decided to see what he could make of the tossed remnants of the relic. He began to wire pieces of beach glass to its original structure. Two hundred pieces of hand-tied beach glass later, he had his first completed chandelier that cast a kaleidoscope of color around the room.
“I live near the beach in Seattle, and I have always been trying to figure out what to do with all the beach glass I’ve collected,” he says. “This was the perfect opportunity to use it.” He also frequents garage sales and local thrift stores to gather materials for his next project.
Morgan was no stranger to creative talent. He had taken very well to pottery in high school. He specialized in the Japanese form of pottery known as Raku, a glazing technique so interesting and detailed it could be a story all its own. At the time he created his first upcycled chandelier, he was a housepainter looking for a career change. “I had

been painting houses at that point for 10 years. I needed an escape plan. The custom glass chandelier art was my escape plan,” he says.
Almost immediately after finishing that first piece, he moved on to his second and his third—and the rest is history. He now owns his own showcase gallery in Seattle, an eclectic double-car garage with glass on three sides overlooking lush green gardens. “It’s been eight years since I had to paint a house,” he says with pride. “I finally am at a point where I can rely on my art alone.”
His pieces vary in size and shape and are made of just about anything you can think of. Jell-O molds, saltshakers, punch cups, beer bottles and decanters have all made appearances in Morgan’s artwork. “I think a sense of humor is a given in my endeavors,” he says. “Whenever I think to myself, ‘I can’t use this in a chandelier,’ a voice in my head says, ‘There are no rules!’ I’m delighted when someone admires a chandelier and then says, ‘Wait a minute. Are those ashtrays?’”

Morgan’s pieces can ship just about anywhere and have made their way from Seattle to New York and even Alaska. His pieces arrive carefully wrapped and can be installed as easily as any light fixture; they are hard-wired and ready for use. He says he’s almost always working on a new custom piece, and there’s really no idea that is off limits or out of his creative boundaries. One of his favorite pieces is nothing short of majestic, utilizing dozens and dozens of vintage Coca-Cola bottles. He affectionately refers to the chandelier as his favorite bit of “pop art.” His designs include desk lamps and wall sconces, and his entire collection blends perfectly with the most sophisticated décor.
Morgan is changing the light cast in homes across America by adding sustainable character and interesting conversations to rooms. He also hopes to change the way our world looks at rubbish. Perhaps we should not ignore the discarded glass bottle we pass along the beach. In the words of Russ Morgan, “Reuse, renew, upcycle!”

Humor
Of all the things I do year-round, my favorite is Christmas shopping.
I’m not one of those guys you see doing the “March of the Damned” through the mall the final three days before Christmas. You know the ones, staring ahead with a disturbing mixture of terror and confusion in their eyes, not knowing where to begin.
I spend the entire year on the lookout for unique gifts for my fun and quirky friends and family. I believe the majority of them are on Santa’s naughty list; in fact, they are probably my friends and family members because they are on the naughty list.
Whenever I stumble across something interesting, I pick it up knowing someone in my life will enjoy it.
High Jinks By BERNIE ERICKSON
After decades of holiday celebrations and traditions, I’ve noticed certain personality types appear in virtually every circle. It’s the same cast of characters in every group.
First, there’s the couple whose life is just one endless great big gift to each other.
Around the first of October, they reflect on the past year’s travel and home improvement projects and decide the best gift they could give each other is a zero balance on the Visa card and call it good. I often fall into this category.
Unless there’s a new must-have electronic or home appliance on the market or someone falls victim to a late-night infomercial and buys the latest “as seen on TV” product guaranteed to make life deliriously easy—then a

modest Visa balance would not only be acceptable, it would be expected.
Every family has a crazy spinster Aunt Ethel. She’s been putting the same 16-by-20 box of chocolate-covered cherries under the tree as a “family” gift for decades. It contains exactly six candies, one of which has had the contents ooze out and become a sticky mess covered with blue fur.
In return, Aunt Ethel always finds a rum-soaked fruitcake with her name on it under the tree. Then you wonder: Does Aunt Ethel truly like rum-soaked fruitcake? Or does she simply like being rum soaked and doesn’t give a rip if the rum is administered via candied fruit, nuts or diet cola on the rocks?
And then there’s the snotty sister-in-law. It doesn’t matter what you buy her, as long as it comes with a gift receipt. Even something as basic as a six pack of dish cloths (who doesn’t need some fresh dish cloths?) or as innocent as a linen breeze scented candle is going to go back.
And don’t even think about splurging on the just-released 1.5-ounce bottle of exotic perfume in the Austrian crystal bottle at the special introductory price of $175.
It’s going to go back at 7 a.m. December 26, like it was a value pack of dish rags.
There are two ways to deal with this type. The first is to buy things at street fairs and flea markets. There’s zero possibility of items going back, and you can smile knowing someone else on your gift list will find whatever you bought under the tree next year. The other is to resort to the uninspired yet lifesaving gift card to a grocery store or gas station.
Speaking of gift cards, we all have that brother we have given up purchasing a gift for and have resorted to the gift card exchange option. You buy him a $10 hardware store gift card, and he buys you a $10 coffee shop gift card, and you call it good.
Whatever you do, do not upset the delicate balance of the holiday get-to-
gather by increasing the gift card amount. Your brother will suddenly think you’ve become uppity, and the snotty sister-in-law will capitalize on this and probably drag the now rum-soaked Aunt Ethel into the conversation.
Now, back to those men stumbling through the mall at 4 p.m. Christmas Eve.
Here’s what you do to get yourself

Here in South Central Kentucky, Mother Nature alternates her snowy winter landscapes with bursts of sunny days. But in many parts of the country, relentless snow and sleet makes decorating an escape from the weather and an essential part of the season. TIP #1: Begin with neutral tonesNeutral tones are easy to work with
because you can incorporate an array of colors with them. By having larger pieces of furniture, such as a couch, in a neutral tone, you can simply throw in colorful pillows that will add a pop of color without making the room feel chaotic.
TIP #2: Focal pointFocus on a few key pieces, such as the
tree, a staircase or fireplace. Spending more time on focal points will help steer you away from over-decorating. Over-decorating takes more time and can look cluttered and distract your attention from
the room.
TIP #3: The three-color ruleFeeling a bit overwhelmed with all the
colors available? The design team suggests choosing three colors when decorating your home for the holidays. By doing so, your room will have a distinct, cohesive theme and will make buying decorations
a lot easier.

TIP #4: dIYWe are fortunate to have so many
online sources when it comes to crafting. Pinterest, Etsy and even Google offer some creative and inexpensive ideas. Here are a few ideas the design team shared.
Take any existing picture frames hung on the wall and wrap them in wrapping paper. When finished, tie ribbons or bows around them, and you will have created an easy, fun decoration without needing any tools.
Want to liven up your dining room with minimal cost? Take a sprig of garland and fasten it to the back of a chair using floral wire. Hang an ornament or any other festive decoration from the
sprig, or let it stand alone.
TIP #5: don't be afraid of colorAdding color shouldn’t be intimidating.
Color, especially during the winter season, is desperately needed. If choosing colors outside the traditional red and green makes you leery, the design teams suggests using different tones of those colors, such as cherry and burgundy or

VIEWPOINT
Q: Tim, we are considering our first kitchen remodel and we don’t know where to begin. What things should we consider when planning our kitchen remodel?
A: For many homeowners, remodeling their kitchen tops their list of desirable home improvement projects — and for good reasons. Not only is the kitchen the heart of their homes — the center of family activity and home entertaining — but remodeling your kitchen is typically one of the smartest investments one can make in their home, many times generating a payback of 80 to 90 percent of the cost of remodel at the time of resale.
With thoughtful planning, remodeling a kitchen can be a wonderfully rewarding project. But, because the kitchen is so central to most homes, is interconnected with other spaces such as the family and dining rooms, and because there is a fair amount of water and electrical (sink, dishwasher, garbage disposal, lighting) involved, a kitchen remodel project has the potential of going horribly wrong when tackled by a do-it-yourselfer or subcontractor. My advice — seek professional help. Trained, experienced remodeling professionals foresee potential problems before they happen, and in the long run, they pay for themselves many times over.
Here are nine tips to help you plan for your next kitchen remodel project.
1. Plan, Plan, Plan. Planning your kitchen remodel should take more time than the actual construction. If you plan well, the amount of time you’re inconvenienced by construction mayhem will be minimized. Plus, you’re more likely to stay on budget.
How much time should you spend planning? The National Kitchen and Bath Association recommends at least six months. With proper planning, you’re likely to resist the temptation to change your mind during construction process, thus saving money.
2. Consider how you really use your space. The first step in planning your kitchen remodel is deciding what you want your kitchen to do for you, and how it reflects the way you live. Do you want an intimate place for drinking coffee
and reading your daily newspaper, a large spacious kitchen that’s perfect for entertaining, or a space that’s ideal for family projects and homework?
3. Get ideas. Start your planning with a visit to a premium tile or cabinet store that offers displays that show the latest in kitchen design. The best showrooms include the use of floor, wall and countertop materials such as tiles, stone, and granite. Read home improvement magazines, check out kitchen remodeling books from the library, visit friends who have remodeled their kitchens recently and check out model homes to see the latest in kitchen design from today’s homebuilders and remodelers.
4. Make a plan. Don’t be afraid to engage a design professional. The top professional remodeling companies have design professionals on staff to help with design selections, cabinet layouts etc. Think about traffic patterns for your new kitchen considering things such as the work triangle, island widths and appliance placement.
5. Design with ergonomics in mind. Depending on the way you use your kitchen, you may want to consider pull-out shelves in base cabinets; fully extending cabinet drawers; or a wall oven instead of a range. These as well as many other options can make a kitchen accessible to everyone — and a pleasure to work in.
6. Include popular features. Include popular features in your kitchen remodeling project to help at resale time, and to give your kitchen a more contemporary look and feel. Second sinks, custom cabinetry, a second oven or microwave, an island, decorative glass and stone tile, more storage space, better lighting and extra-wide wall tiles are among the most popular features in today’s homes.
7. Keep it elegant. Focus on using materials and fixtures that exude quality, warmth, and timelessness. To create an elegant, more spacious look, consider marble or granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, adding or replacing windows, mixing tile textures, sizes, colors, types (natural stone, ceramic, porcelain, glass), and embracing neutral colors and whites.
Consider Everything in a Kitchen Remodel – Including the Kitchen Sink

8.Reduce clutter. Everyone likes a spacious, clean kitchen. For many kitchens, the greatest challenge to achieving more space is cutting the clutter and hiding items that you don’t want to see such as stacks of mail, overflowing junk drawers and cabinets bulging with unused pots and pans. To achieve a less cluttered look, consider incorporating a bulletin board so you can keep the refrigerator door clean; avoid placing appliances too close together and creating tight spaces that are difficult to clean. Use large wall tiles to eliminate grout lines. And add storage to free up valuable counter-top space.
9. Green is in and here to stay. When remodeling your kitchen, consider using top-of-the-line energy-efficient appliances that save water and electricity, replace old windows with new energy-efficient windows, and consider installing energy efficient-lighting that can give you many years of maintenance free service while reducing your energy bills. Finally, don’t forget to use the opportunity of remodeling to make space to recycle paper, cans, bottles and food scraps.
With proper planning and the right professionals on your team, a kitchen remodel can turn your kitchen into the perfect work environment, intimate nook for reading the morning paper, or the perfect entertaining hub you always dreamed of. Better yet, you will get to enjoy your new creation for many trouble free years to come.

Nobody ever downsizes with the goal of making life more complicated, so it is ironic that the change can be so demanding. From choosing a builder, a floor plan and a locale, to selecting which furnishings to keep, the entire process requires one decision after the next.
When Pattie and Darrell Logsdon looked toward retirement and decided it was time for a more manageable square footage, they turned for help to builder Brent Wimpee, owner of Southern Kentucky Building & Remodeling. Wimpee’s ability to manage the process of building their new home was as important to them as his ability to actually build it.

Extending the dining room beyond the confines of the original blueprint meant a minimal added expense for maximum impact. Family dinners can now be hosted in the “eat in” kitchen furnished with heirloom pieces including the corner cupboard and the mahogany table.

The wood inlay on this bureau caught the homeowner’s eye. It was a newer purchase from United Furniture, but it marries well with the existing pieces.
“Right-sizing” adds value by specifying the furnishings that homeowners cherish. Here, a roll-top cherry desk in excellent condition belonged to Pattie’s father before it belonged to her.
Contractor Brent Wimpee suggested hardwood floors in variable widths. Ranging from 2½ to 3¼ inches, the white oak flooring also offers a variety of color tones.

Their previous home had four bedrooms, two and a half baths, kitchen, dining room, family room, living room and media room. Pattie had a big garden and the lot had mature hardwoods so yard work and house cleaning seemed to take on a life of its own. “Plus we were heating and cooling a place that was way too big for us,” she says. And while their grown children and grandchildren were always welcomed, they also lived close enough to spend the night in their own beds.
After searching unsuccessfully for a buildable lot within the city limits, the Logsdons decided to look at the city annex and purchased a lot in Cumberland Ridge. Today they are comfortably “right-sized” in a home that has the best of both worlds. The main living area is a combination great room, dining room, and kitchen. French doors along the back lead to a

patio and beyond that a landscaped lawn, sans buckets of oak leaves for raking.
Designed for single story living, the home has three bedrooms, and two full baths on the main level. The finished room upstairs serves as play area and extra bedroom for their grandchildren’s visits.
Throughout the building process, they balanced their budget against the prospect of a long-term investment. They came to appreciate the fact that Wimpee was able to keep them on track financially, while still offering upgrades and custom work when he felt it would significantly enhance the value of the finished home.
He simplified the process of selecting finishes by sending them directly to a short-list of trusted sub-contractors. “Brent had a list of people I needed to go see,” says Pattie. From Mid-South Lumber, to Bowling Green Winlectric, to Creative Wood Cabinets, each of the suppliers was

The original blueprint was customized to allow a side-entry to the garage. This helps keep the proportions and still allows the house to be sited deeper on the lot.

able to guide the homeowners toward an efficient use of their funds, without being overwhelmed by the infinite possibilities that can accompany a building project.
Which is not to say that the budget was non-negotiable. For example, instead of carpet, the Logsdons chose oak floors in variable widths to add luster to the great room. In the kitchen, custom cabinets and granite countertops and hand-rubbed bronze fixtures did cost more on the front end, but they also will increase the beauty and the value of the kitchen in the long-term.
Another “upgrade” came when they realized the original blueprint had a dining area that was not quite big enough for their needs. They decided to expand the space, so Wimpee calculated everything from the exterior brick to the studs, to the insulation. The Logsdons appreciated his commitment to their bottom line mainly because building a

home is such a long-term proposition. Even the heating and cooling costs of an extra square foot of space adds up over time.
Since the goal was to simplify their lifestyle, and reduce the seemingly infinite number of projects that comes with owning a home, the Logsdons looked for simplicity. In the master bath, for example,
a grotto-style shower space means no more cleaning glass doors.
The wall colors, and decorative touches are all Pattie’s design. She had to lighten the load when they moved, so she kept her cherished pieces and accented them with bursts of color from throw pillows, blankets, and framed art. The walls are finished in what Pattie calls, “the colors of
autumn.” So now, thanks to the magic of Benjamin Moore, she and Darrell can enjoy the relaxing hues of red and gold without having to spend their weekends raking them from the yard.
As they settle into the right-sized home, the Logsdons have come to appreciate the value of an investment that will offer maintenance-free living for years to come.
Old fashioned perfume bottles are beautifully displayed in this glass-front curio cabinet.
A twig mirror above the sink helps add a delicate touch in the master bath.
The tub features cultured marble countertops and a tub surround with a ribbon of metallic tiles. Cubed glass in the window adds an element of privacy.
The home is designed for single story living, but extra space in the attic was finished for the couple’s grandchildren. Here, a simple twin bed basks in the light of the A-frame window.

For 142 years, Schonbek has delighted clients from around the world as a leading manufacturer of superior crystal lighting. Schonbek’s story began in 1870, when Adolph Schonbek, a 24-year-old Bohemian glassmaker, left his position in his family’s glassworks business to establish his own company in what

is now the Czech Republic. He began building crystal chandeliers, believing that crystal and light were a spectacular pair to unite.
In the late 1800s, Schonbek was awarded its distinguished crest by Franz Joseph of the Habsburg Court. Schonbek’s son, Arnold Schonbek, took over the family business in 1932 at the age of 17. Fifteen years later, after his business was nationalized by the government during the political unrest at the time, he began the family business anew in Montreal, Quebec, envisioning a brighter future. And bright it was.
Arnold patented the “bow-tie connector” in 1971. This device allowed crystal pendants to be held at a perfect angle, maximizing each crystal’s beauty and further cementing Adolph’s reputation for ingenuity.
As his business grew, with increasing sales in the United States, Arnold permanently relocated all operations to Plattsburgh, New York, in 1972.
In 1984, the manufacturer unveiled an inventive technique for gluing crystals together. This discovery made it possible to “sculpt” infinite crystal forms into original chandelier designs, such as the Trilliane collection in 1992.
Incorporated as an international brand in 1989, Schonbek continued to create distinctive, artistic crystal lighting designs, including the patented method of displaying decorative ornament
curtains in 2007. This idea sparked the design and production of the Schonbek Crystal Curtain (Geometrix Product Collection) and the Plaza and Quantum families.
To date, Schonbek is responsible for more than 200 patents.
Schonbek also captivates audiences in the film and entertainment industry, adorning Hollywood movie sets and prestigious venues, as well as palaces, theaters, luxury casinos, hotels, fine restaurants and other notable locations around the world.
“In 2007, Schonbek was acquired by Swarovski, the world’s leading producer of high-quality, precision-cut crystal for fashion, jewelry and more recently, lighting, architecture and interiors,” states David White, VP of global sales and marketing for Swarovski Lighting.
“The Plattsburgh location now serves as the global headquarters for Swarovski Lighting, with all Schonbek products still handcrafted in northern New York.”
“The values and vision of founder Adolph Schonbek have been preserved and protected for 142 years,” explains White. “Since his earliest days designing and handcrafting chandeliers, innovation has always been at the forefront. This has not changed. Advancements in

technology, materials and production methods have broadened the spectrum of design options. Today, Schonbek offers more than 50,000 finish, crystal and style combinations, as well as custom creations. A made-to-order brand, Schonbek remains true to its superior quality and classic design language.”
As today’s homeowners continue to blend personal preferences in works of art with unique lighting fixtures in their homes, exquisite crystal chandeliers will continue to offer fascinating artistic design and alluring beauty.
“Crystal is inspiring to homeowners, for it evokes emotion. There is a depth and radiant energy specific only to crystal, and when paired with light, it takes on a life of its own,” adds White. “Today’s homeowners are seeking items for their interiors that are as exquisite as they are personal. Crystal chandeliers, for example, are a prime investment in the home. Not only do they reflect one’s appreciation for beautiful lighting, they represent a purchase of value and meaning. A crystal chandelier is an heirloom that will sparkle for many generations.”
Schonbek has proved itself as not only a leader in ingenuity but also as a change-maker in the international lighting industry, consistently shaping and reshaping the lighting landscape.
“Between both the Swarovski and Schonbek brands, there is over 250 years of heritage and a rich legacy that exists worldwide. Swarovski Lighting maintains and continues to expand each brand’s position in the global arena through innovative new product introductions and a comprehensive dealer network. This network offers an extensive portfolio of premium finished-lighting product lines,” White elaborates. “Swarovski Lighting participates in the world’s most important lighting shows, from the Dallas International Lighting Market to Euroluce in Milan, and has a permanent 9,000-square-foot showroom at the Dallas Market Center.”
Brilliant, luminous and glistening, Schonbek’s stunning and novel crystal chandelier creations bring a magical sense of wonder into every room they encompass. With captivating and exquisite designs, Schonbek truly brings a world of gorgeous lighting options to your home.

In November, SKyPAC hosted the Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker. Around 60 young performers from troupes in Bowling Green and Northern Tennessee danced alongside the professional ballerinas in supporting roles.
The Nutcracker ballet was introduced over
100 years ago and is an adaptation of a coming-
of-age story by E.T.A. Hoffman and was scored
by the great composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Since the 1960s the ballet has enjoyed a renaissance
among American audiences.
According to Greg Keightley, Marketing and PR Director at SKyPAC, the Moscow Ballet holds auditions well in advance of the scheduled performance, and then relies on local instructors to prepare their dancers
Included in the SKyPAC performance were troupes from Dance Arts of Bowling Green, Dance Images, Dance South, Dynamic Dance and the American Academy of Dance.
SKyPAC’s holiday performances will culminate on New Year’s Eve with the presentation of Dueling Pianos, to take place in the Laura G. Turner Foundation Lobby. The event is interactive and party-goers will have the chance to make requests, sing-along, and become part of the act.
Because there will be a cash bar and champagne toast, the New Year’s Eve event is limited to those 21 and older and ID’s will be checked at the door.

For many of us, the holidays are not as hysterical and happy as television commercials lead us to believe they are or should be. For many of us, the holidays are clouded with shades of melancholy, downright sadness or, at the very least, the dreaded seasonal stress of parties, shopping, spending, eating, drinking and cleaning.
It can be hard to throw cares away simply because carols tell us we need to. Our very real concerns don’t stop being part of our day-to-day lives simply because the holidays are approaching; in fact, they can often be exacerbated because of the rush of trying to cram the media’s version of celebrating into four to five short weeks.
What can be done? How can we find true cheer with all the insanity that surrounds us?
What if we just stop? Stop everything we don’t want to do, buy, eat, drink, clean and more. What if instead of saying yes to what we think we have to, we say yes to what we want to?
Don’t want wake up at 3 a.m. to shop? Then don’t. Don’t want to be part of the Secret Santa exchange at work? Then don’t. Don’t want to spend an exorbitant amount on whatever your children believe they need to have? Then don’t.
Instead, say yes to making cookies with your children or grandchildren—even if those cookies are premade rollouts from the grocery store. Say yes to game night
with your family. Say yes to insisting on homemade presents—and fewer of them, while you are at it. Say yes to shopping as a family for your favorite charity, giving tax-deductible gifts to nonprofits in people’s honor or volunteering at a local shelter rather than attending one more cocktail party, purchasing one more meaningless gift and resenting the work and dollars that go into all of that.
Say yes to people and no to everything else that doesn’t interest you.
Think back to your favorite holiday memories. How many of them involve stuff and things? Don’t most of them involve the people you love? Don’t most of them center around time spent t o g e t h e r — t a l k i n g over a simple dinner,
playing a board game, watching Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, ringing the Salvation Army bell, getting ready for the church Nativity pageant, singing carols, playing in the snow? I could go on and on, but the point is, none of those memories involve spending money, standing in line or searching for the right gift, dress or remark.
The holidays are what you make them. Choose your options carefully. Time is marching on, your children are watching, and you are making memories for them—and for you. Let this season be a time of gathering together those you hold most dear. That will truly be a season to celebrate.
REFLECTIONS A season tocelebrate
It can be hard to throw cares away simply
because carols tell us we need to.
