In Recognition to our Staff -- Reaching Landmark Years of Service in 2016!
By: Michelle Nelson
40 Years of Service – WOW!!! - 1976 – It was a very GOOD YEAR!
The work history of our two 40 Years of Service staff began before Crosspoint was Crosspoint. Both worked at the Developmental Learning Center before their consolidation with the Vermilion County Mental Health Center to become the Vermilion Mental Health and Developmental Center – which became Crosspoint.
Clara Davis – Starting as an Outreach Worker with the Developmental Learning Center back in 1975, Clara’s anniversary date/ starting date with Crosspoint is recorded as June 25, 1976. Clara worked as an Infant Screener until 1987, when her position and job title changed to Case Coordinator-Infant De-velopment Specialist. Clara was promoted to Supervisor of Infant Development Services in 1989. With significant changes to the program over the last several years, Clara serves as a Developmental Therapist; providing vital services to children and their families in their homes and in the community. Though the program has downsized considerably over the years, the quality of services provided by Clara has remained top notch. Thank you Clara for your many years of dedicated service; we appre-ciate you beyond measure.
Cheryl Pichon – Starting as a Child Development Worker with DLC, Cheryl’s anniversary date/start date shows as August 2, 1976. In September of 1990 Cheryl was promoted from Developmental Technician to the new position of Supervisor of Health and Education Technicians. With a change in the clientele and programming during 1991-92, Cheryl’s job description title was changed to Supervi-sor of Day Training Technicians. Though often a quiet presence, Cheryl’s knowledge of the Day Training Program and the persons it serves is vast and her input is valued and appreciated. Her pres-ence is calming and hers is the nice voice heard on the answering service when you call Crosspoint. Thank you, Cheryl, for everything that you do, you are appreciated!
20 Years of Service
Thom Pollock – Thom came on board as Executive Director of Crosspoint on July 15, 1996.
The agency has grown in leaps and bounds during Thom’s tenure. New programs and services have been added and staff numbers have grown. Under Thom’s leadership Crosspoint has a well known presence in the community, providing quality mental health services, developmental services, domes-tic violence services, shelter for homeless women and children, childcare services, and affordable housing despite the dire situation with the budget of the State of Illinois. Thank you for your dedica-tion to Crosspoint Human Services, the staff we employ, and the people we serve.
15 Years of Service
Holly Phillips – Holly was hired April 10, 2001 as a Residential Technician. Holly transferred to PSR and became a Skills Trainer on December 3, 2012 where she has been able to learn new skills and use the ones she developed in Residential Services to help her flourish as a Skills Trainer. Holly is a valuable member of the PSR team and we appreciate her dedication to the persons we serve!

15 Years of Service continued
Linda Rudy – Linda joined the Residential program on April 10, 2001 as a technician on first shift. She was promoted to Medical Assistant in August, 2004. Linda then returned to the Residential pro-gram in January, 2006 as a Residential Technician before being promoted to her current position as a Residential Supervisor on April 18, 2013. Regardless of her role, Linda has been a valuable asset to Crosspoint Human Services and to the persons we serve. Her ability to ride the waves of change in Residential has been appreciated greatly!
Michelle Nelson – Michelle joined Crosspoint on April 10, 2001.
Ken Howard – Ken became an employee at Crosspoint on July 1, 2008; however, he has worked at the YFRC since November 8, 2001 as a Maintenance Technician. His knowledge of the Y building is invaluable and he proudly keeps it running like a fine oiled machine!
Lori Thatcher – Hired on November 27, 2001, Lori works as a Technician in our Day Training Pro-gram. Lori has a positive spirit, a friendly smile, and is an asset to Day Training as a program and the persons they serve. Thank you Lori for being a valuable member of Crosspoint!
10 Years of Service
Karla Dieu – Karla has been an employee of Crosspoint Human Services since July 1, 2008; how-ever, she has been a part time Teacher in the Early Learning Center since May 25, 2006. Only work-ing summers, Karla is rarely seen outside of the Early Learning Center, but is a huge asset and help to them while she is there!
Brenda Hays – Brenda started working at Crosspoint on January 24, 2006 as a Case Manager in Re-covery Services; on May 9, 2008, Brenda transferred to Crisis Services where she works as a Crisis Intervention Counselor. Brenda has been a consistent presence in the ever changing crisis office and often takes on the role of mentor to new staff. Her ability to roll with the flow and the changes is greatly appreciated!
Kristopher Kizer – Kris joined Crosspoint as a Maintenance Technician on June 26, 2006. Whether it’s by painting, repairing, or changing light bulbs/filters, we thank you, Kris, for being a part of the valuable team that keeps the properties of Crosspoint Human Services in great shape!
Vickie Miller – Vickie started working at Crosspoint Human Services on June 26, 2006 as a Billing Assistant in Administrative Services. Vickie has a wonderful sense of humor and a contagious smile, but, don’t let that fool you; she is a bull dog when it comes to getting insurance companies to pay the claims they owe Crosspoint. She is a valuable asset to the Administrative team, always willing to help with additional duties, and promotes the safety of the staff by taking charge of fire/weather drills and Facility Safety Surveys!
Meredith Grant - Meredith began working at Crosspoint on October 9, 2006 as a Crisis Intervention Counselor. On November 30, 2007she transferred to Recovery Services as a Case Manager. In July, 2016, Meredith transferred to Vocational Services as an Employment Specialist. Meredith is a huge asset to the team; helping them to achieve exemplary fidelity for the second year in a row and has flourished as an Employment Specialist!

Michelle Toth – Michelle started working at Crosspoint May 12, 2011 as a Day Training Technician. Her artistic ability has brightened up the Day Training area and her art work can often be seen dis-played on the bulletin board in the main hallway at 210 Ave. C. Michelle goes above and beyond for her co-workers and persons served and she is appreciated!
Rachel Cravens – Rachel was hired June 13, 2011 as the PEACE Coordinator. On January 8, 2016, Rachel switched to the position part time as she is attending nursing school. She is a valued member of the team and has a role that is most certainly not easy. Thank you for the quality service you pro-vide to person served by Crosspoint.
Linda Lucas – Linda was hired August 30, 2011 as a legal advocate before swapping positions and becoming a care coordinator. Linda decided to retire on August 4, 2015, but has stayed on part time to fill in where needed. Whether it be in domestic violence services, transitional shelter services, or answering the phone at the front desk, we appreciate all that you do Linda!
Sandra Knauer - Sandra was hired September 19, 2011 as the MIS/IT Manager. Sandy works hard to update an outdated system, to get Avatar fully implemented, and now to bring new Accounting/HR/Payroll software on board. She is always cheerful, always willing to help, and has a contagious giggle that sometimes includes a snort! Thank you, Sandy, for everything you do to make Crosspoint more efficient!
Donna Clay – Donna was hired September 29, 2011 as an in home worker under Day Training. She now works as a Day Training Technician in a classroom. Donna is a great advocate for our persons served and is prompt to let supervisors know when something is awry. Thank you, Donna for every-thing you do!
Cher Pollock - Cher was hired December 9, 2011 as the Supervisor of Clinical and Accreditation Services at the 201 N. Hazel St. location. On February 7, 2013 she was promoted to Director of Ser-vices at the Y. Cher is passionate about the programs she serves and the staff she supervises and is a strong advocate for both. She is a strong promoter of teamwork between programs! We appreciate your positive spirit, Cher, and everything that you do!
The quality, continuity and history of service that this combination of 260 years represents are invaluable! Many, many thanks to all of you for your years of dedication to Crosspoint and the persons we serve.

Enhancing Your Child’s Social Development Sent in by: Cindy Montgomery, Supervisor of Early Learning Center
To enhance your child’s social development further, Lawrence Balter Ph.D., child psy-
chologist and parenting expert, suggests the four strategies below.
Teach empathy: Run through different scenarios by asking your child how other people
might feel when certain things happen, and substitute different situations each time.
Explain personal space: Tell your child that it’s important for everyone to have some per-
sonal space to feel comfortable, and practice acceptable ways to interact with someone
during playtime.
Practice social overtures: Teach kids the proper way to start a conversation, get some-
one’s attention, or join a group of kids who are already playing together. These are all
situations that can be discussed and branstormed at the dinner table, or in the car on the
way to school or activities.
Go over taking turns: Sit with your child for at least an hour a day and play with him to ex-
plain what it means to wait, take turns and share.
The Employee Rec-
ognition Committee
is raffling off a pair of
cowboy boots with
flowers planted in
them for an outside
decoration. If you would like a chance
to win these boots. Please contact
Cheryl Allison at the Y or Jeanine Black
in Human Resources to enter. It’s free to
enter. Drawing will take place on Friday,
May 12. This would also make a nice
Mothers Day present.
Updates at the IPS/WRAP/PSR Corner
IPS News-
The Vocational Team had their annual Fidelity Review conducted in late March and we’re happy to
report that we achieved Exemplary Fidelity again this year! We even bested our score by 3 points
from last year. Congratulations to Meredith Grant and Karla Anderson for their awesome performance this
past year to achieve this level of recognition. They are also on track to meet their contract goals of 14 place-
ments by June 30th! Way to go team!
IPS is an evidence-based program that promotes employment as a crucial part of one’s recovery. Anyone in-
terested in working is eligible. If you know of a person served that could benefit from the program and would
like employment, please complete a referral form and submit to Aimee Unakis.
WRAP News
Aimee Unakis has been asked by Re- gion 3 WRAP Trainers to become a trainer this
Fall. Aimee became a WRAP facilita- tor in 2015 and a WRAP Educator in 2016.
This next step becomes the highest level of achievement as a WRAP provider.
Crosspoint is one of the few agencies in Regions 3 and 4 that have 4 facilitators who also are:
Randi Jones, Diana Brenneman and Joey Smith. Any facilitator can do individual treatment or a person
served can be referred to the weekly WRAP group which is held every 12 weeks on Fridays from 10-12. The
next set of classes begin on Friday, May 2.
WRAP is voluntary and can be self-referred or by a service provider. WRAP is an evidence-based program
and can be beneficial when added to other forms of treatment. WRAP puts the Recovery in the person’s
hands. It is a self-guided foundation that assists persons served with creating their own recovery plan. Re-
covery has NO limits and NO boundaries! If you know of a person served that could benefit from the pro-
gram, please complete a referral form and submit to Aimee Unakis.
PSR News-
The PSR Department and Vocational Departments submitted a grant in February asking for fund-
ing to create a computer lab. We got accepted for the grant and were awarded enough money to fund 5 com-
puters and a printer! The CSG room will house the computer lab and it will benefit persons served in both pro-
grams. In Vocational, this will help those in job search learn how to use a computer, create their own re-
sumes, increase typing skills, learn Microsoft Word and Excel, and complete job searches. For PSR persons
served, it will also provide the skills listed above as well as doing research for the class topics they are inter-
ested in . The team is excited for this opportunity for our persons served!
PSR teaches or re-teaches living skills an individual may have lost or never learned during their mental illness
recovery. These skills help individuals through group and individual settings to learn to become more inde-
pendent and to realize their highest potential for a productive life.
If you know of a person served that could benefit from the program, please complete a referral form and sub-
mit to Aimee Unakis.

Thought for the Month
When I despair, I remember that all
through history the way of the truth
and love has always won. There have
been many tyrants and murderers and
for a time they seem invincible, but in
the end, they always fall — think of it,
always.
