You do not have to be a world leader–or even a billionaire–to make an impact. If we are going to turn things around, we all need to do our part to make it happen. Change starts with you.—Ted Turner Chairman & Founder, UN Foundation

POSITIVE CHANGE FOR A BETTER WORLD

WHO WE AREA Letter from Ted and Tim

When disaster strikes, the world turns to one organization for hope, help, leadership, and coordi-nation: the United Nations. When there is peace to keep between warring factions, the world asks the UN to mobilize peacekeepers, oversee elections, and create stability. In the face of challenges such as global warming, the United Nations provides the platform for international cooperation.

The United Nations is the one international organi-zation with the reach and vision capable of solving global problems.

The United Nations Foundation links the UN’s work with others around the world, mobilizing the energy and expertise of business and non-governmental organizations to help the UN tackle issues including climate change, children’s health, peace and security, and poverty eradication.

long term plan for humanity. International cooperation through the United Nations is no longer a wishful dream; it is both a reality and urgent necessity.

The United Nations Foundation is honored to work with you and the United Nations to foster a more peaceful, prosperous and just world.

Thank you for your commitment to helping the UN solve global problems.

TIMOTHY E. WIRTH President

One way the UN Foundation supports the UN is through innovative campaigns that are an entry point for the public sector and our partners to impact a specific issue. To date, our award winning grassroots initiative Nothing But Nets has distributed more than 3.5 million bed nets to African families to prevent malaria. In addition, our recently launched Girl Up campaign funds UN programs to provide the world’s hardest-to-reach girls with life-changing opportunities like the ability to go to school and stay safe from violence. We believe that catalyzing positive change on the critical issues facing the world requires engagement and commitment by all countries and all sectors.

With each passing day, our world becomes more interconnected. The fates and future of humanity are linked as never before. We believe that it is not enough to find solutions merely for today but we must force ourselves to think 1,000 years ahead and develop a

OUR MISSION

The UN Foundation was created in 1998 with entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner’s historic $1 billion gift to support United Nations causes and activities. As a public charity, we advocate for the UN and connect people, ideas, and resources to help the UN solve global problems.

We help the UN take its best work and ideas to scale—through advocacy, partnerships, community-building, and fundraising.

à advocacy because we know the impact that sound policy can have on the social, economic, and environmental changes the UN seeks;

à partnerships because we have seen first-hand what can be achieved when the public and private sectors come together through the UN;

à community-building because the UN was created for “we the people,” reminding all of us that anyone can contribute to building a better world; and

à fundraising because we need new and additional resources to power solutions to global challenges.

Under the direction of our distinguished Board of Directors, we work closely with UN Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon and the United Nations Office for Partnerships.

OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE UN

The United Nations Foundation is guided by the key priority of the UN: fostering international cooperation for a more peaceful, prosperous and just world. We are honored to work closely with the UN’s effective leaders in the Secretariat and across the UN system. Our work supports these leaders and the priorities set by Member States.

To ensure effective collaboration with the UN, we work with the United Nations Fund for International Partnerships (UNFIP) and the United Nations Office for Partnerships (UNOP). UNFIP and UNOP are liaisons between our work and that of the UN system, acting as channels for our financial and other contributions to the UN system. Together, we work to foster new and innovative partnerships in support of UN causes.

CONTRIBUTING TO THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS (MDGs)

The United Nations Foundation is committed to helping advance the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)by 2015. The MDGs focus on eradicating poverty, ensuring access to education, empowering women and girls, improving women and children’s health, combating disease, ensuring a sustainable environment, and developing global partnerships.

Significant progress has been achieved, even in the poorest countries, where UN programming is supported by adequate resources. But to fully realize the promise of the MDGs, good policies must be implemented at every level, and we need to build effective partner-ships between the public and private sectors.

THE UN AT WORK

children’s health

Our objective is to help the UN reduce childhood mortality and disease by strengthening public health systems, and by eliminating or controlling infectious diseases such as polio, measles, and malaria. We contributed to a 50% decrease in malaria in Africa since 2000 and helped immunizing 700 million chil-dren against measles and polio.

biodiversity & sustainable development

We work with the UN to protect and preserve World Heritage sites by promoting sustainable tourism. We are recognized as the world’s largest private supporter of World Heritage and have worked to protect more than 50 World Heritage sites in over 30 countries.

technology for development

We develop initiatives that harness information technologyto increase UN efforts in providing humanitarian relief, health data collection, and access to emergency com-munications. We supported over 25 deployments of emergency telecommunications in disaster areas in countries including Haiti, Indonesia, Lebanon, Pakistan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

advocating for the un

We communicate the UN’s value and accomplishments as the world’s platform for peace, prosperity, and jus-tice. We successfully called on the United States to rejoin the UN Human Rights Council to better protect people around the world. We believe that full funding of the UN is necessary to achieve its goals in areas such as peacekeeping, disaster relief, and others.

women & population

We work to advance the internationally adopted goal of universal access to reproductive health care by 2015, and build support to empower and educate adoles-cent girls worldwide. To date, we have invested $50 million for HIV/AIDS prevention programs and funded large-scale adolescent education and livelihood projects in developing countries.

energy & climate change

To address the challenge of global climate change, we work with the United Nations, governments, NGOs, and the private sector to develop and implement sustainable, clean energy solutions. To date, we have successfully pioneered clean energy businesses serving more than 300,000 people in India and Africa.

the energy future coalition is a broad-based, nonpartisan alliance that seeks to bridge the differ-ences among business, labor, and environmental groups, and identify energy policy options with broad political support. The coalition aims to bring about changes in U.S. energy policy to address the economic, security, and environmental challenges related to the production and use of fossil fuels. We envision a world of economic opportunities that will be created by the transition to a new energy economy.www.energyfuturecoalition.org

girl up unleashes the energy and compassion ofAmerican girls to raise awareness and funds for UN programs that help adolescent girls around the world. Campaign supporters can give a “High Five” to girls in developing countries by donating $5 or more to provide girls with such basic needs as access to school supplies, clean water, life-saving health services, safety from violence, and more.www.girlup.org

nothing but nets™ is a global, grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. Inspired by sports columnist Rick Reilly, hundreds of thousands of people have joined the campaign since it was created by the United Nations Foundation in 2006. Founding campaign partners include the National Basketball Association’s NBA Cares, The People of The United Methodist Church, and, Sports Illustrated. It only costs $10 toprovide an insecticide-treated bed net that can prevent this deadly disease. In 3 years, the campaign raised $30 million and sent 3.5 million nets to families in Africa. The message is clear: Send a Net, Save a Life.www.nothingbutnets.net

the global polio eradication initiative was created in 1988. The UN Foundation works with the Initiative’s partners, including Rotary International, the Bill & Melinda Gates Founda-tion, World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to mobilize resources to eradicate polio, helping to reduce polio by 99% worldwide.www.polioeradication.org
