Stutzman Girl arrivesA Day that will go Down in His-torySACRAMENTO, CA. It started out as a typical Wednesday night at McClellen Airforce Base, where the Stutzman’s lived. Dad played poker at a neighbor’s, while Mom was home at 5700 Luce Ave, North Highlands, CA with 2 bridge tables going strong.

“Dr. Klein assured me it’d be at least another 2 weeks before the baby comes.” Judy said, trying to convince 7 nervous women they shouldn’t worry about the pains she started having about 6 pm.

She had spent the entire after-noon making her favorite dessert and was looking forward to the icebox cake when a contraction hit her so hard, she doubled over. Af-ter catching her breath, she politely smiled at her guests, and although determined to eat her cake, she called Dad to come home.

One of the neighbors stayed with sleeping Paul (10 days shy of a year old) when Mom & Dad left for Mercy hospital around 7 p.m. Having had a 24 hr. labor with Paul, Mom mentally prepared herself for another long haul. To everyone’s surprise, 4 hours later, with one big push, Laurie, “just popped out,” said Judy. It was just past midnight (12:17 AM) Thurs-day, August 15.

She had a wild mop of black hair; her dad’s brown eyes and dimple; and her mom’s big nose. “Is it a boy?” asked Dad.

Laurie wasted no time crawl-ing, and was walking alone at 11 months. Paul happily took on the big brother role and lovingly doted over his little sister. He spent hours taking her hand and gently leading her around the house. She repaid him with her first sentence, “PAUL DID IT!” as she snatched his trucks

and ran.Diapers were not her favorite ac-

cessory, and her cleaning compul-sion started when she was about 2 when she potty trained herself. By 2 years, Laurie spoke in long sen-tences, loved books, ate like a horse, begged for Paul constantly, and was a terrible flirt with men. Her artistic talent appeared early and she be-came a master at cutting out paper dolls at 3 years old.

Who would have guessed that this “devilish” child 50 years after that bridge game would become my one and only “perfect” sister.

Dr. Seuss Takes on Challenge A new book, The Cat in the Hat hit shelves this month. Dr. Seuss was given 223 primary sight words and was chal-

lenged to create a book. It took him 9 months to complete the book which is sue to be a hit with elementary schools.
