  • Patients Transported by Airlift Northwestto Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center HelistopJuly - December 2003 To our neighbors:

This is a bi-annual report to the community summarizing emergency medical helicopter landings at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center

A Medical Review Committee meets twice a year to review all emergency medical landings at Childrens Emergency Department. This committee includes two representatives from neighborhoods surrounding Childrens, a representative of Seattle-King County Department of Public Health, two physicians independent of Childrens and key medical leadership and nursing transport from Childrens Hospital. In addition, an internal medical review committee comprised of medical leadership and nursing transport from Childrens Hospital meets bimonthly.

The committees continue to find that the overwhelming majority of these emergency medical landings are for critically ill patients for whom immediate pediatric care or intervention is indicated. We continue to evaluate each situation to determine whether a safe alternative to the landing at Childrens is available.

Landings at the helistop at Childrens must meet established medical criteria and only occur for our most critically ill patients. Any one of the following conditions qualifies for a landing at Childrens helistop: inability to maintain oxygenation or airway, inability to maintain adequate cardiac circulation, inability to maintain adequate blood pressure, or persistence of unstable vital signs.

If you have comments or questions, please call Suzanne Petersen, Director Community, Government Affairs and Advocacy, at (206) 987-2125; or Sarah Rafton, Assistant Director, at (206) 987- 3881. You can also write them at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center, P.O. Box 5371, MS T-1, Seattle, WA 98105-0371.

Childrens has modified patient identifiers in the six-month helistop report in order to protect patient confidentiality and adhere to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.
