Patients Transported by Airlift Northwestto Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center HelistopJuly - December 2003 To our neighbors:

This is a bi-annual report to the community summarizing emergency medical helicopter landings at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center

A Medical Review Committee meets twice a year to review all emergency medical landings at Childrens Emergency Department. This committee includes two representatives from neighborhoods surrounding Childrens, a representative of Seattle-King County Department of Public Health, two physicians independent of Childrens and key medical leadership and nursing transport from Childrens Hospital. In addition, an internal medical review committee comprised of medical leadership and nursing transport from Childrens Hospital meets bimonthly.

The committees continue to find that the overwhelming majority of these emergency medical landings are for critically ill patients for whom immediate pediatric care or intervention is indicated. We continue to evaluate each situation to determine whether a safe alternative to the landing at Childrens is available.

Landings at the helistop at Childrens must meet established medical criteria and only occur for our most critically ill patients. Any one of the following conditions qualifies for a landing at Childrens helistop: inability to maintain oxygenation or airway, inability to maintain adequate cardiac circulation, inability to maintain adequate blood pressure, or persistence of unstable vital signs.

If you have comments or questions, please call Suzanne Petersen, Director Community, Government Affairs and Advocacy, at (206) 987-2125; or Sarah Rafton, Assistant Director, at (206) 987- 3881. You can also write them at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center, P.O. Box 5371, MS T-1, Seattle, WA 98105-0371.

Childrens has modified patient identifiers in the six-month helistop report in order to protect patient confidentiality and adhere to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.

Sheet1

July - December 2003

DateLandingDepartureTransported from

July

75:24PM5:37PMKitsap County

2412:14PM1:57PMSkagit County

August

74:35PM4:49PMSnohomish County

128:28PM11:15PMKing County

September

108:53AM10:08AMIsland County

116:32PM7:59PMWhatcom County

203:03PM3:11PMKitsap County

2212:38PM1:57PMSnohomish County

233:20PM4:07PMKitsap County

238:15PM9:25PMSkagit County

October

12:15AM2:59AMKing County

114:58AM6:12AMIsland County

143:09PM4:31PMWhatcom County

3012:00PM3:00PMALNW Pilot Certification*

November

412:53AM3:16AMWhatcom County

47:15AM8:22AMKing County

1612:53AM3:16AMKing County

December

35:35PM7:08PMPierce County

412:40AM2:07AMIsland County

62:01AM3:01AMLewis County

712:08AM12:38AMIsland County

96:57PM8:54PMPierce County

115:46PM7:42PMPierce County

224:01PM6:03PMWhatcom County

Sheet2

Sheet3

Sheet1

Ages of patients landed - July - Dec. 2003Outcomes

3Newborn3Discharged less than 48 hours

7Infants7Discharged 48 hours to 7 days

6Toddlers5Discharged at 7 days or more

3School Age1Discharged at 31 days or more

4Adolescents2Transferred

24Total Landings*includes pilot certification5Deceased

Sheet2

Sheet3

Sheet1

Ages of patients landed - July - Dec. 2003# of casesOutcomes

3Newborn3Discharged less than 48 hours

7Infants7Discharged 48 hours to 7 days

6Toddlers5Discharged at 7 to 30 days

3School Age1Discharged at 31 days or more

4Adolescents2Transferred

24Landings* includes pilot certification5Died

Sheet2

Sheet3
