Recently a group from our church went on a mission trip to New York City. We worked at a church in Lower East Side Manhattan- building a courtyard, fixing and painting a large metal fence, and working in their food service where hun-dreds of homeless people are fed everyday. The other church was in Brooklyn where we hauled soil from a park and made a nice garden for the church.

I was very pleased with our group. They had a high level of expertise, a good work ethic, and a lot of love for the people they were serving. The finished product of their work was very well done! I am very thankful for their work.

When I was painting, I noticed a dab of paint on the wall. Oops! I have left my mark. With all the work that was done, our church left a good mark. The mark that I want our church to leave is the love of Jesus. That was evident in the thankfulness and happiness of those whom we served. We have developed a special friendship and partnership with them.

The day after I got home, I was running with a pair of shorts that I used while painting in New York. I could see marks of paint on them. It made me reflect upon the experience our group just had with the people there. I started to think of the mark the people made on me. I enjoyed the people of the church and the relationships that have been built over the years. When serving, often the people that we serve give us so much in their special presence.

Jesus died on the cross. His marks are the five wounds that he suffered. As we are baptized we receive the mark of the cross upon our foreheads. As we serve the Lord, we receive other marks- scares on our skin, paint on our clothes, mud on our shoes, and sweat upon our eyebrows. Thank the Lord for the opportunity to be his church.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Jeff Pedersen

To the Lutheran Church of peace, thank you very much for selecting me to receive your scholarship! I am glad that you have been so supportive of my endeavors for several years now. I intend to put your contribution to my education to good use as I continue at Iowa State Univer-sity. I was recently excepted to the graphic design pro-gram this summer, which I will pursue in addition to my minor in music technology. Thank you very much! God bless, Nick Demaree

The family of Harry DeBuhr wishes to thank everyone

who helped with his funeral arrangements. Thank you to

Pastor for his support and for Visiting him and praying

Stewardship note

What does the Lord require of us? In love, God desires our whole person. He wants us to commit our lives by picking up our cross and following him. This means we are witnesses to his creative and redeeming work in the world. We engage in worshiping God, we serve the Lord with gladness, we have fellowship in his name, and we give of our time, talent, and possessions. How much do we give? God wants 100% of our person. He asks that we give 10% of our income and time in serving his church. The other 90% we use wisely in his ser-vice. All that we have is a gift of God’s grace. We will always give to what we believe in.

GATHER BIBLE STUDIES Anna Madsen a freelance theologian and proud mama to daughter, Else, and son, Karl. She works with OMG: Center for Theological Conversation (omgcenter.com) and enjoys seeing the occasional moose and bear in their woods. Session three: the products of prayer (Romans 8:26-28) It is indeed true that many results of prayer are intangible—and even impossible—to discern. But it is also true that prayer can demonstrably change the brain, reduce stress levels and, some studies say, appear to correlate to otherwise inexplicable healing in those for whom people have prayed. In the final session of this series, we will investigate the effects of prayer personally, communally and on the mission of the church.

We have the pleasure of Hosting again the week of August 12th.

Hannah Campbell Gustafson had a baby girl on July 12th.

If you have ever thought about joining the LCOP Family Promise volunteers let me know or call the office. The following story was shared by Bill Manthe, St Clement’s-volunteer:

On Saturday evening the 4 year-old in the family we were hosting in Family Promise came downstairs shortly after her mom put her to bed. The little girl came into the living room where I was sitting and, pointing outside, said, “That light is too bright for me to get to sleep.” She was pointing toward the Lancaster Inn. I told her that her bedroom was on the other side of the building, so she could not see this light. She responded by saying that this is not a building. I told her that it was a building. She said again that this was not a building. Once more I said it was, and I grappled for a means to describe a building in a way that a 4 year-old would understand. I asked, “If this is not a building, what is it?” Her reply was, “It’s a home.” Her response humbled me. Yes, she was right. What I considered merely as a building, she knew as a home. It has beds, closets and bathrooms, a kitchen, living room and dining room. Sounds like a home to me- and it was to her. Don’t we all want to be in a place we call home?

Judy Goke, Lutheran Church of Peace Coordinator

Planning for the 2021 ELCA Youth Gathering being held in Minneapolis has already begun and will continue over the next year as a theme is developed and planning teams are assembled. There have only been two Gatherings in the north since its begin-ning, 2015 in Detroit and Minneapolis in three years! To read about their trip, please check out the Mission Case next to the church office!

Prayer Concerns

Please continue to pray for our home bound and nursing home residents; cards and visits are always welcome. Prayers for all the ministries of our church and all the magnificent volunteers that put their

heart into all they do. The church could not function without them!

Pray for all the children at LCOP to be part of Sunday school or youth group. This is an

amazing time to be with their brothers and sisters in Christ. Pray for them to open their

minds and hearts to the lessons they learn. Pray for the teachers and volunteers for both

Sunday school and youth group. They have the enormous responsibility of helping teach

the children about our God in Heaven and the love he has for us all.

Kathryn Kieckhafer has started her internship at Grace Lutheran Church in Dodgeville and

Char Eversoll will start at St. Peter in Dubuque. Lets continue to pray for them both.

Please continue to pray for Josh Zauche, Maddie Zauche and Angela Melby as they finish

the summer working at Sugar Creek Bible Camp.

If there is to be peace in the world,

There must be peace in the nations.

If there is to be peace in the nations,

There must be peace in the cities.

If there is to be peace in the cities,

There must be peace between neighbors.

If there is to be peace between neighbors,

There must be peace in the home.

If there is to be peace in the home,

There must be peace in the heart.

Notes from your Church Council

July Council Highlights Finance report we are $ 8000 behind budget. Line of credit is set up and ready to be used for Rock work Rock of Ages Project : We need leadership in this fundraising campaign, and more focus on it as more funds are needed. Mike Legrand will be drafting a letter to membership regarding stewardship and the Rock of Ages campaign. Council agreeing that we need to get the Rock of Ages fundraising going. Will have separate meeting on July 29th at 6pm to discuss what we can do for events this summer and a larger event this fall. Would like to get many people involved and have more fellowship opportunities. We welcome all who would like to help with these events. Church Mutual Insurance -Council voting to move forward with change to Church Mutual for all our insurance needs. Will have more coverage and cost will be less than we are currently paying. Change will take effect at the end of the month. Office Air conditioning should be completed in the next week. Fall worship schedule Lengthy discussion on worship services. Idea of going to 2 services Saturday night and 1 blended service on Sunday at 9am. Council feeling that this was not the time to go to a blended service. Will stay with 3 services Saturday night at 6:00pm Sunday morning 8am traditional and will move contemporary service to 10:00. Moving service up may allow for more members to attend and still attend sporting events. Will ask worship and music committee to try and have services be kept to 1 hour. Also to plan on having blended services next sum-mer, Church Use Recent concerns with some vandalism of fire pit, unsupervised children on playground. Difficult to fix these issues. Also discussed use of church with home schoolers. Need to assure that there is proper supervision and to assure that we are covering the cost of electricity, heat etc. Ann will meet with Hannah and bring back to Au-gust meeting current home school commitments, days, time and fees. We welcome your questions, concerns, ideas and participation. Feel free contact any of the council members or my-self if you would like to discuss church issues.
