THE DALHOUSIE DIGEST WWW.DALHOUSIECALGARY.CA FEBRUARY 2016 7

In Our CommunityDalhousie KindergartenJunior Kindergarten, Another Community OptionStudents at the Dalhousie Community Kindergarten program continue to have fun while learning. January has been busy with Yoga and Hip Hop dance lessons for our students, as well as the start of skating lessons at Brentwood Sportsplex. We also get to practice skating on our community outdoor rink, and will be planning on a skating party with our mentoring buddies from HD Cartwright Junior High. (Hip Hip Hooray for the volunteers who help make all this possible! ) In March we start swimming lessons at Churchill pool, and continue with our music lessons with Wendy Kondrat.

All of our activities are essential to our learning and development, and one of the reasons why our program is one of Calgary’s top offerings! We limit our class size to 18 students each year, and with January registration underway, we anticipate to have a full class once again for the 2016 – 17 year. Our program offers spaces for both Kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten (JK). Kindergarten is funded by the Government of Alberta for children who will be 5 years old by February 28, 2017. While not mandated nor funded by Alberta Education, our JK program offers an option for children who are ready for an enriched program, but are not yet ready for a full Kindergarten program. To attend, children must turn 4 by September 2016.

One student who benefits from JK is the child who meets the February cut-off, but has a late birthday. Usually this student has already completed preschool, but parents feel that they may not be quite ready for placement in kindergarten due to maturity or to an underdeveloped interest in letters and numbers. For these students, parents often feel that kindergarten is “rushing things.”

The second case that we often see is where children do not meet the February 28th cut-off date, but are advanced in literacy and numeracy. These students need to go beyond the preschool focus in order to maintain interest, enthusiasm and curiosity. JK offers language arts, math, science, music and physical activity appropriate for their advanced understanding, in a nurturing and secure atmosphere.

Junior Kindergarten is also beneficial where parents have decided that a child’s ‘official’ kindergarten year will be spent in a language immersion program, such as Spanish or French, or where children are developing their English language skills. Because a second language is a significant change for a child, it is helpful to first attend an English JK. Children gain immensely

in self-confidence by spending time getting used to classroom routines, beginning literacy in English, and developing collaborative play. These children are more assured of success the following year when they engage in these processes in a new language.

Kindergarten registration opens on Jan 26th and JK registrations will be accepted starting Feb 1, depending upon available space. Please call (403) 288-1050 to check on available spaces or visit our website at www.dcakids.com for more information.

Triple A: February UpdateWhen the snow blows often our first thought is to hunker down and stay inside. This can often lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation. It always lifts our spirits when we spend time with others, especially when that time involves light exercise. Triple A has a number of options for light exercise and social fun. From Walking Clubs to Fitness classes, as you will see below there are a variety of options. If you’re looking for some outdoors adventure, why not try Snowshoeing? The Kirby Centre is organizing a Guided Snowshoe Trip to West Bragg Creek on Friday February 19th for $50 per person. For more information please call Kerby Travel at 403.705.3217

Join us on Tuesday March 9th for Senior’s Follies at Heritage Park! Each year Heritage Park invites those 55+ in Calgary to join them for a delicious luncheon with heritage style entertainment at the historic Wainwright Hotel in the heart of Heritage Park. Scenic Acres Community Association will be organizing a group to attend this wonderful event. The more the merrier are invited so bring a friend! The ticket price for the luncheon and round trip transportation is still to be determined. In past years it has been around $35 and includes round trip transportation from the Crowchild Twin Arena in Scenic Acres to Heritage Park, in addition to the luncheon, door prizes and entertainment. Please contact SACA at 403.547.9589 or [email protected] if you would like to reserve your spot on the bus.

THE DALHOUSIE DIGEST WWW.DALHOUSIECALGARY.CA FEBRUARY 2016 11

Dalhousie SoccerThe goal of Dalhousie Soccer is to provide

an opportunity for players, referees, and coaches, to participate and enjoy community soccer. Dalhousie Soccer is a community-based soccer program providing an opportunity for the youth of our community to play soccer. Teams are formed on the basis of equality within each age group. The emphasis is on development of soccer skills, team sportsmanship, and FUN. All teams are mixed boys and girls. This recreational league is offered for U4 to U10 age groups inclusive. 2015 season runs from April 21 – June 18 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

RegistrationRegistration is available online ONLY this year. Registration is open from February 1 to March 15 (registration link will be available February 1). Registration between March 16 and March 31 will be subject to a $20 late fee. No other registrations will be accepted after March 31. You will need a current Dalhousie Community Association membership to register. If you have any questions or concerns about your registration, please contact the DCA at 403-286-2555 #1 or [email protected].

This year, we will run a U12 boys and a U12 girl’s league, if there is enough interest. We are looking to cooperate with Edgemont Soccer to have more teams involved in this program.

Age Groups and Registration FeesPlayers participate in the soccer program according to their age. All players must register in their proper age group. Children may play in an older age group than the one designated for their year of birth (“playing up”), but under no circumstances will they be permitted to play in a younger age group. We get numerous requests for this each year. In advance, we ask that parents respect that for reasons of safety and fair play, there are no exceptions to this rule.

U4 SoccerThis program is a friendly introduction to soccer for children three years old as of December 31 of the previous year. As this is an introduction to soccer, most of the time will be spent on fun, non-competitive games that build confidence with touching the ball. All activities are held on our community fields, Thursday evenings ONLY. Parents are required to remain at the field to supervise their child.

U6 SoccerThis program is an introduction to soccer for children four and five years old as of December 31 of the previous year. The teams are mixed boys and girls and are arranged in an attempt to make each team equal in ability. Children will be playing games with emphasis primarily on dribbling the ball, but also the very basics of kicking and passing. About twenty-five minutes will be dedicated to fun skill-building games and drills, and twenty minutes to a soccer game. Games are played with four children each side including the goalie, giving each child opportunities to handle the ball. With smaller teams (ideally 7 or 8 players to a team), numerous parent volunteers to coach teams are required. All games are held on our community fields Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings. Parents are required to remain at the field to supervise their child.

U8 SoccerThis program is based on fun and a continuing emphasis on building soccer skills for children six and seven years as of December 31 of the previous year. The teams are mixed boys and girls and are arranged in an attempt to make each team equal in ability. Children will be playing games with emphasis on dribbling, kicking and passing. They should also learn the basics of such skills as goalkeeping and shielding the ball. About thirty-five minutes will be dedicated to non-competitive skill-building fun games, and twenty-five minutes to playing a soccer game. With smaller teams (ideally 7 or 8 players to a team), numerous parent volunteers

to coach teams are required. All games are held on our community fields, Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings.

U10 SoccerThis is a community house league for children eight and nine years old as of December 31 of the previous year. The teams are mixed boys and girls and are arranged in an attempt to make each team equal in ability. Children will be playing games with emphasis on kicking and passing. They should also learn goalkeeping, shielding the ball, and various ways of stopping and controlling the ball. About forty-five minutes will be dedicated to skill-building games and drills, and thirty minutes to a soccer game. The games will be played with seven children a side and will have referees controlling the game. Scores and team standings are not kept; the emphasis is on fun and participation. All games are held on our community fields, Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings.

VolunteersDalhousie Soccer is a community-run, non-profit, volunteer-based organization. All families are required to fulfill at least one volunteer role as a condition of registration. If you have more than one child in our program, your family is still only required to fill one volunteer role. Without sufficient volunteers to run the program, it is at risk of being cancelled. Please consider this fun and rewarding opportunity to make a difference for your kids and your community. The most critical volunteer positions are for coaching. At least two coaches are required for each team and at the younger age group levels, absolutely no experience is required. Coaching clinics will be provided! Other volunteer positions included equipment volunteers, safety and ball pump volunteers, and season end event volunteers. Detailed job descriptions are available in the online registration system during the registration process.

CoachingTo teach young kids, you do not need to be an expert in soccer. What you need is to be enthusiastic, have fun, and reinforce what players do right with praise. Praise will make the kids feel good about soccer and doing their best. Your positive thinking will carry over and reap huge dividends for your team.Basic kicking, dribbling, and passing are all the skills you need and can be learned easily. Mostly you will direct the kids to play some fun soccer-skill building games like “British bulldog”. Playing the right games, week after week, you will be amazed at the improvement of your players. The fuel driving their learning and improvement is having fun. When you see the kids enjoying themselves, you will find yourself having fun too.

Please sign up to volunteer helping with coaching. We intend to have two coaches for every team, in the event that you cannot make it to a game and need backup. Coaching clinics will be offered at the DCA at the completion of registration. The program coordinator will contact you with dates and times. Thank you for your participation in Dalhousie Soccer!

Dalhousie U10 Spring Soccer Program ProposalThe Dalhousie U10 soccer program operates in a

large league on Dalhousie fields in conjunction with Edgemont Soccer registrants. Last year there were ten teams. Based on registration numbers, for 2016 we would like to split into separate girls and boys leagues (for example four girls teams and six boys teams), or if numbers do not substantiate this, a boys league and a coed league (for example six coed teams and four boys teams), since this would be a more favorable arrangement for the majority of families. In either event, these leagues would be on the same fields at the same time.

Casino Volunteers NeededWest Dalhousie School is getting ready for our next

casino on February 4 and 5. Casino funds are hugely important to Calgary schools, allowing us to make improvements to technology in the school, buy books for the library, invite artists-in-residence and build new playgrounds! We are looking for a few more volunteers (and a few back up volunteers) for our two days at the Elbow River Casino. No experience is necessary!
