In Our CommunityIn Our CommunityIn Our CommunityDalhousie Co-operative Playgroup Registration is on-goingPlaygroup FormatWednesday September 30, 2015 – June 8, 2016.

Each session is about 2 hours long and consists of four (4) segments in the same basic format.• 9:30 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. large toy time• 10:15 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. circle time• 10:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. snack time• 10:45 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. craft and small toy time

The playgroups objective is to provide a parent – attended program for pre-school children which encompasses a wide variety of experiences that include gross and fine motor activity, imaginative play, exposure to music and rhythm, and socializing. For the parents, the playgroup provides important opportunities for friendship and support.

Maximizing fun while minimizing work is theunderlying philosophy of cooperative playgroups. Our Dalhousie Playgroup (founded September 1989),and the guidelines presented here have been adoptedfrom an Ottawa playgroup, which has been operatingsuccessfully or over 20 years. It is understood thatbecause of fluctuating personal circumstances membersmay not always be able to contribute as much as theywould like. However, in order for the playgroup tofunction as a cooperative, some minimal acceptableeffort must be forthcoming from each member of thegroup. Most members are surprised by how little workis needed to operate a playgroup smoothly and happily.

Expectations Of Each ParentEach parent must fulfill six basic obligations:1. Supervise his / her own child / children2. Set up and lock up duty in rotation3. Craft activity in rotation4. Wash toys and sort craft supplies periodically5. Assist weekly to sort and store toys in their proper

containers and shelves

Current DCA membership required $32.00Registration will be prorated based on the remaining classes at time of registration

Dalhousie KindergartenJanuary is Registration Month! The start of a new calendar year also brings registration for kindergarten programs across the city. Our program, which has a long history in our community, offers:• low teacher to student ratio and use of a full time aid;• an experienced, enthusiastic teacher who loves her

profession!• an open and welcome classroom with parental

participation;• the development of social skills and the “whole” child;• an appreciation of differing learning styles and the

opportunity to learn at your individual pace;• a curriculum focus that allows for special class interests

and includes enriched experiences outside of the classroom (Swimming, skating, and many field trips!)

• regular music instruction;• teaching of critical thinking skills emphasized over

rote learning;• daily outdoor playtime that inspires imagination,

social development and creative play; • opportunities for parents to develop lasting

relationships with each other;• an environment where diversity is celebrated, and a

sense of community is encouraged.

Our program is publically funded, and follows curriculum requirements set out by Alberta Education. A strong academic component in our program ensures that our students are well prepared for Grade 1, and we offer a diverse and rewarding experience for both students and their parents. To qualify for Kindergarten registration, your child must be five years old by March 1, 2016 to start class in September 2016.

Not quite old enough or not sure if your child is ready for kindergarten? Our Junior program may be the right choice! It follows a curriculum that is similar to kindergarten but adapted for those children who are not yet ready for ECS because of their age or development. Children must be at least 4 years of age by September 2016 for this 5 day a week junior program.

Our Open House for parents considering registering for the 2015/16 school year will be held on Tuesday, January 12th from 6:30 – 7:30 pm in our classroom at 5432 Dalhart Rd NW. Kindergarten registration will take place on Tuesday, January 26 from 6:30 - 7:30 pm on a first come, first serve basis. Each class size is limited to 18 students. Registration for Jr Kindergarten students, (should any available spaces remain) will open on Monday Feb 1 at the kindergarten office starting at 9:00 am. Before and after childcare is available on site through the DCA. Please call us at (403) 288-1050 or visit our website at www.dcakids.com for more information.
