Our Think Pink fundraiser at SAMA’s Altoona Museum represents a partnershipbetween two of this region’s most recognized and respected not-for-profit organizations – the American Cancer Society and the SouthernAlleghenies Museum of Art. It is a partnership with a strong message, unbounded potential, and the promise of a bright future.

This initiative is one of the Museum’s signature fundraising programs. Theevent is noted for its food, festivities and fun. This is SAMA’s eleventh year ofstaging this program, and this year’s Think Pink theme reflects our commitmentto community involvement, sophisticated style, and an attention to detail.

I commend SAMA-Altoona Site Coordinator Barbara Hollander for hercreativity and tenacity in establishing this partnership initiative. Barbara doesan incredible job with this program and in everything she does at the AltoonaMuseum. SAMA volunteers and Museum staff have worked hard to make thisevent a very special evening. Our Chair, Kim Irwin, and Co-Chair, Jim Cayce, provided the energy and enthusiasm to make Think Pink a fun program and anight to remember. We also are pleased to have the Allegro on board for thisyear’s program. Patrons and sponsors have stepped up to help make thisendeavor a success. Finally, I thank the Director’s Circle, Museum Associates,Exhibition Patrons, and other donors who give generously to help make ourwork at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art possible.

We welcome this opportunity to bring you a magical and memorable evening.Funds raised through tonight’s program are critical to maintaining museumoperations and sustaining SAMA programs, as well as benefitting the AmericanCancer Society. The support we receive from Think Pink helps keep our doorsopen to the public free of charge and funds our community art exhibitions andeducation programs.

Director’s Welcome

I would like to thank Barb Hollander for inviting CAbi to bethe featured clothing company for this year’s SAMA FashionShow. I have been a CAbi consultant for 5 years. While I amusually showing the clothes in the comfort of a hostess’shome, I am so happy to be able to share Carol’s designs withall of you in my first fashion show setting. I have always beena fan of the arts and all the women in my family loveexpressing themselves through fashion. I would like to thankall the artists, volunteers, sponsors and guests who have giventheir time and talent to make this evening possible. Yourgenerosity and support for the arts never ceases to amaze me!

Think Pink Chair and CAbi consultant

This year’s partnership with theAmerican Cancer Society hasbrought our idea of fundraisingto a higher level. Our Museumasks our patrons to contribute allyear long to our various projects– General Operating Campaign,Gala, Garden Party, and ourSAMA-Altoona fundraiser. Toreach outside of ourselves andtake the risk of not meeting our personal goals because wehave made a commitment to Making Strides Against BreastCancer was a major decision. I thank our Director, GaryMoyer, for never hesitating when this partnership idea waspresented to him.

To our sponsors: You make this event a success before weeven open our doors for the evening. You are critical inmaintaining our exhibition programming and operations. Irealize you are committed to numerous organizations and thismakes your support of SAMA even more important to all ofus who cherish the arts.

Our Think PinkChair, Kim Irwin, has brought an enthusiasticand calming approach to this event. Her personal style, elegance, and professionalism make working with her abreeze. Jim Cayce, our Co-Chair, is always our voice ofreason and a stabilizing force with every SAMA project.

The committee has been passionate and forthcoming in theirtime and monetary contributions, as well as their efforts inprocuring items for the silent auction, making desserts, andsoliciting ads and sponsorship. I extend my thanks to The Allegro for their culinary expertise and to Jeff Greenberg for his photographic skills.

Let’s continue to Think Pink next year on November 7!

Barbara HollanderSAMA-Altoona Coordinator

Welcome

On behalf of the 2013 MakingStrides Against Breast CancerCommittee, we are thrilled andhonored to partner with theSouthern Alleghenies Museum ofArt during their Think Pink event.

Making Strides Against BreastCancer supports the AmericanCancer Society’s unique missionto fight breast cancer on all fronts

and save lives by helping people stay well by reducingbreast cancer risk or finding it early; helping people getwell by providing information and support during andafter a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking cancer research; and byfighting back by encouraging lawmakers to pass lawsto defeat cancer and by rallying communities world-wide to join the fight.

The thoughtful donation provided by SAMA alongwith funds raised through our MSABC events help tosupport the men and women and their families withinour communities who are courageously battling thisdisease as well as help to fund research so important tofinding the cure for breast cancer.

Again, many thanks for this wonderful opportunity!

Lisa KonczMSABC Event Coordinator

American Cancer Society

The Journey ContinuesOn May 1, 2013, I became a fifteen-year breastcancer survivor. My life changed fifteen yearsago, but I survived this disease and other challenges in my life. I had a wonderful careerat Altoona First Savings Bank and began a newcareer at Penn State Altoona in 2009. I received

my associate’s degree from Penn State Altoona in 2013, becamea certified Pilates and Zumba instructor, and performed in musicals produced by P&J Productions at the historic MishlerTheater. I am an active member of Sunrise Rotary, past presidentof Allegheny Ballet Company, and a current member of the Altoona Redevelopment Authority Board. Recently, I learned togolf and love the game. I truly live life to the fullest. On August23, 2013, I had my annual mammogram and my life changedagain in an instant. I was diagnosed with breast cancer and beganthis familiar journey once again. The cancer was diagnosed in thevery early stage, but this journey will be longer with several surgeries and more physical and emotional challenges. I will meetthis journey with the same positive attitude and determination asI did fifteen years ago.

Congratulations to SAMA for partnering with the American Cancer Society on the “Think Pink” theme for this year’sfundraiser. I will miss walking the runway with my friends, butwill be there in spirit. I look forward tojoining them again next year.
