Our Mission

We recognize humaninterdependence with marine

mammals and their importance assentinels of the ocean environment,

the health of which is essential forall life. It is our responsibility touse our awareness, compassion

and intelligence to foster marinemammal survival and the

conservation of their habitat. TheMarine Mammal Center works

toward this end:

• Through rescue and humanetreatment of ill, injured or orphanedmarine mammals, to return healthy

animals to the wild

• Through scientific inquiry, toincrease knowledge of marine

mammals, their health and theirenvironment and assure their

long-term survival

• Through education andcommunication, to increase

appreciation of marine mammals, foster informed decision-making

affecting them, and inspire action toprotect the marine environment.

2004 ~ a year of challenges & successes

In 2004, The Center admitted more than 700 sick and injured seals, sea lions, porpoisesand other marine mammals. Each and every one of these animals contributed to our growingknowledge about the diseases from which they suffer - diseases like this year’s outbreak ofleptospirosis, a bacterial condition causing kidney damage, or domoic acid toxicity, acondition that results in seizures and often death. We used more sophisticated procedures, such as electroencephalograms (EEGs), to better identify diseases, and we implanted life-history transmitters in animals that were treated and released to let us know more about theirlong-term survival. What we learned from our patients, we took on the road to help saveendangered or threatened species like the Hawaiian monk seal (see page 3).

Throughout the year, we partnered with multiple organizations, like the National MarineFisheries Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and University of California, Davis. We wererecognized for our abilities to treat and diagnose marine mammal diseases by visitingscientists from Brazil, Norway and Mexico – all who wanted to learn more about our workwith marine mammals. We were also recognized by the federal government, resulting ingrants to study marine mammals as sentinels of the ocean, and long-term effects ofdomoic acid toxicity.

Our education programs continued to be popular, as we reached more than 90,000 peoplethrough our outreach and events. Our volunteers also continued to provide phenomenalsupport, logging in more than 88,000 hours during the calendar year of 2004.

The Center’s financial picture remains strong. During fiscal 2004*, revenue totaled $7.7million, $5.2 million for operations and $2.5 million for construction to improve our facilityin Sausalito, scheduled to break ground in fall of 2005. We have adequate reserves forunexpected operating needs and have raised $12 million of the $14.5 million needed torebuild our facility. The Center is well positioned for its 2005 operations and for successfulfundraising to complete our capital campaign. Your donations made it possible, and we thankyou very much.

The Center is especially known for its successes in treating andrehabilitating injured and ill marine mammals. In 2004, scientists fromaround the world came to The Center to learn more about the cutting-edge techniques developed here, particularly in the areas of anesthesiaand clinical diagnostics, medicine and surgery.

Speedy and accurate diagnosis is critical to successful rehabilitation, andThe Center continued to make strides in this area. For the first time inThe Center’s history, magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs), positronemission tomography (PET) scans and electroencephalograms (EEGs)were all used to better diagnose domoic acid toxicity, a conditionregularly seen in patients at The Center that can result in brain lesions, seizures and death for the animal. Through these procedures, it wasdetermined that many patients were actually suffering from seizures yetexhibiting no direct outward display. With quicker and more accuratediagnoses, staff scientists were better able to administer appropriatemedications and care.

In addition, satellite transmitters were implanted in seven animals thatwere affected by domoic acid toxicity and subsequently deemed healthyenough to be released. These transmitters will help The Center’s scientists better understand the long-term effects of exposure to

domoic acid by following the animal’s behavior, tracking divingpatterns, and comparing its behavior to “normal” behavior. At thistime, there is no direct correlation between the severity in theaffected animals’ brain lesions and their successful release, and TheCenter will continue to monitor this important development.

Above, left: With only 1,200 remaining, the Hawaiian monk seal is the most endangered pinniped in U.S. waters. Thanks to the work that The Center has performed with its cousin, the northern elephant seal, staff scientists arewell positioned to assist in this species’ survival. Staff veterinarian Dr. Martin Haulena went to Kauai in 2004 to helpdirect anesthetizing a monk seal to remove an ingested fish hook; and Director of Veterinary Science Dr. FrancesGulland collaborated on a longer-term effort to identify and rehabilitate undernourished monk seals in order tohelp ensure the species’ survival. This effort is expected to continue into 2005 as scientists grapple with the criticalissue of saving these majestic animals.

Above, second from left: One of the most noteworthy patients to visit The Center in 2004 was Chippy, theCalifornia sea lion that made international headlines by swimming some 60 miles inland and crawling on top of aCalifornia Highway Patrol car. The Center’s veterinarians found that Chippy was shot in the back of his head, and hebecame a poster-sea lion for the harmful effects of humans on marine mammals. He also galvanized concernedcitizens who responded with an outpouring of support. Chippy’s bullet was removed and he was successfullyreleased. The office of law enforcement under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration continues topursue the perpetrator of this crime, a felony under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972.

Above, third from left: Baker D, a juvenile bottlenose dolphin, was admitted to The Center in 2004 with variouswounds, and muscle necrosis and damage to skeletal muscle as a result of stranding on the beach. The Center’svolunteers swung into action, providing him with 24-hour-a-day care until he was stabilized and able to swim andeat on his own. After four weeks at The Center, he was transferred to a facility where he could dive and betterexercise his muscles, preparing him for his eventual release. He was satellite tagged and has since been trackedswimming and diving along hundreds of miles of California coastline. Bon voyage, Baker D!

Above, right: Flipper, a harbor seal pup, was admitted to The Center in 2004 with severe cuts in his hind flippers, possibly brought about by a boat propeller strike or shark bite. X-rays revealed that both his hind flippers werebroken, and his prognosis was dim. Thanks to The Center’s entrepreneurial spirit, veterinarians performed surgeryand were able to successfully implant pins in Flipper’s hind appendages. He was eventually released, pins intact, and ready to resume a harbor seal life of diving, fishing and foraging.

Scientific discovery to improve treatment

The Marine Mammal Center continued to make inroads into theunderstanding of marine mammal health and diseases in 2004.Considerable research was conducted around leptospirosis, a bacterialdisease that affects many mammals (including humans). In 2004, thedisease occurred as an outbreak among California sea lions, causingseizures and kidney failure. Research suggests that the bacteria hasactually adapted to sea lions and may be shed through “carriers,” or sealions that are not outwardly suffering from leptospirosis, but continueto shed the bacteria through urine, thus infecting more sea lions. Moreresearch is underway to identify the DNA of this particular strain, andof the strains that affect other marine mammals. Further research mayalso result in improved treatments that not only cure the patient, butprevent shedding of leptospirosis and the spread of the disease.

The Center, in collaboration with the University of Florida, alsoconducted research around a pox virus that continues to plague patientsand also appears to be latent. Blood tests have revealed intermediate levelsof antibodies in animals that show no symptoms, and future researchmay determine if animals are carriers and if treatments can be improved.

Finally, The Center launched an effort aimed at assisting the survival ofthe Hawaiian monk seal, a species that is endangered with only about1,200 animals left. It appears that the survival rate of these animals islinked to the seals’ weight at the time they are weaned. In order toensure the survival of the species, The Center has devised a program, inconjunction with the National Marine Fisheries Service and the U.S. Fish& Wildlife Service, to identify undernourished weaners and help them gainweight so that they may have a chance to survive and eventually mate.

The Center continues to conduct and collaborateon research projects collecting a regular patientby-product, “poop.” Scientists are currentlystudying feces in order to better understand sealions’ diet in their natural habitat, fecal bacteriaand antibiotic resistance in elephant seals, andfecal cortisol as an indicator of stress in sea lions. All of these projects will further scientists’understanding of how marine mammals live inthe wild, and how these findings may relate toocean health, and human interaction withmarine mammals.

It is not uncommon for scientists from aroundthe world to contact The Center about marinemammal health and treatments, particularlysince the 2001 publishing of the CRC Handbookof Marine Mammal Medicine, co-authored byDirector of Veterinary Science Dr. FrancesGulland. Veterinarians and scientists look to Dr.Gulland and The Center’s staff for their expertise, and in 2004, visited The Center from countries asfar away as Norway, Brazil, Canada and the U.K. Dr.Stephen Jones from the U.K. was one of 10veterinarians that joined the staff for a week inJuly to learn about new techniques associatedwith marine mammal medicine.

In 2004, The Center was approached to test anew technology that may eventually help saveendangered species. “D-Day” was one of fourCalifornia sea lions released from The Centerwith an implanted “life-history” transmitter thatwill relay location, diving patterns, bodytemperature and other pertinent informationfor the last two weeks of his natural life. It ishoped that successful implants in California sealions will lead to successful implants in Stellersea lions, a species whose population hasdeclined by 70% in the last 15-20 years. Byimplanting Steller sea lions with the same typeof transmitter, scientists hope to betterunderstand the age and behavior of the animalat the time of its death, and the cause for thisspecies’ rapid decline.

In 2004, The Center continued to educate children and adults aboutits work and the wonders of marine mammals.

The Whale Bus outreach program that takes marine mammal lessons“on the road” to schools, continued to be very successful. An evaluationprocess garnered teacher suggestions for improvement, including waysto better align content to California Academic Standards. One third-grade teacher wrote: “The program was absolutely fantastic. Thespecimens are wonderful. [The instructor’s] knowledge of the subjectmatter and rapport with the students is just awesome. Something asgreat as what we experienced [can’t] be improved!”

Youth Programs also continued to attract nearly 90 students, ages14-17, who learned about marine mammals, explored careers in marinescience, volunteered in animal care, education and other areas, andgained interpersonal and job skills.

Thanks to the generosity of the DMARLOU Foundation, program feesand bus transportation were provided so that more than 200 low-incomeelementary school students could visit The Center, take part in itseducation programs, and explore the surrounding Golden Gate NationalRecreation Area. The DMARLOU Foundation also provided fundingfor low-income high-school students to explore marine science throughhands-on lab activities in their classroom and at The Center.

Finally, while enjoying the beauty of local marine environments andlearning from staff naturalists, members and the public supported TheCenter through several fundraisers that took them to the water aboardcatamarans, kayaks and other boats. Outreach through new displays aboutThe Center’s rescue and rehabilitation work, and research on marinemammal diseases extended to professional baseball, as thousands of fansof the San Francisco Giants helped celebrate Marine Mammal Day atSBC Park. The new displays were also viewed by more than 13,000people at 45 community events andfairs throughout the year.

The capital campaign to raise $14.5 million torebuild The Center’s main hospital facility inSausalito, California will be moving into its communityphase soon, reaching out to members, donors and the generalpublic for support in the coming months. This project is critical tocontinueThe Center’s essential work, replacing a 30-year-old deteriorating physical plant.

The new facility, which is modeled on the success of the newGeoffrey C. Hughes Harbor Seal Hospital, the Carol AnnRead Harbor Seal Intensive Care Unit, and the Sara HartKimball Marine Mammal Surgery Center, will allow us to:

•Continue to improve diagnostic capabilities and treatments ofpatients, including threatened and endangered species,

•Accommodate scientists visiting from around the world whoare collaborating with us on research affecting marine mammalhealth and diseases,

•Enhance our on-site educational programs to raise awarenessand instill environmental stewardship within the thousands ofpeople who visit The Center each year, and

•Improve public amenities including parking, pedestrian access, restrooms and retail services.

The design work will use ‘green’ principles as much as possiblein choice of construction materials, water filtration systemsand landscaping. Architectural drawings will be submitted forrevised cost estimates at the design development level, expectedshortly. Scheduled to break ground in fall of 2005, the newcenter will be a source of pride for all who support our work.We look forward to offering exciting opportunities forparticipation in the campaign to all members, donors, volunteers and the general public in the coming months.

For more information on the capital campaign, contact JessicaHsu at 415.289.7367.

Key to The Center’s future will be our continued collaboration withvolunteers. Eight-hundred strong, our volunteer team forms the

backbone of our operations, administering to animals, educatingvisitors and helping with administration duties. During the

calendar year of 2004, volunteers contributed more than 88,000hours to The Center.
