Hi from Nat’l. Chevy, The weather has been getting better for us. It’s warming up during the day, but it’s still in the 30’s at night. It’s too early for flower planting due to frost. I tried that once before and lost all my flowers. I’m hoping it will continue as we have Back to the 50’s coming up in a month. June will be busy for us with the car show and one granddaughter graduating college and the other high school. The catalog is now being printed and hopefully will be in your hands in early July. The plans are to send it along with your newsletter. It is possible the package may arrive a little later than normal. We are planning on going to Iola but will not be selling. Our plan is to spend a few hours on Friday and then leaving again. Paul likes to check out the show while I read or visit with friends. It’s become a habit more or less having attended the show for the last 40 years and we’re thinking this will probably be our last visit to the show. Time to go. I hope you all have a great summer and have fun at the car shows. I’ll see some of you at the Back to the 50’s show. ‘Til next time.....

I am writing this letter to update you on my progress. I had a good 2013 and made many car shows. I also installed a new headliner, which I purchased from you. My friend and I installed it. It made a big difference. I received four trophies in 2013 for best appearance. A lot of people like the car. They say it reminds them of when they were young and riding in their father’s and grandfather’s car. A lot of people are getting their cars ready for the shows. Pictures are of the car shows with my two brothers, Billy and Bobby and myself. My brother Bobby has an ‘89 T-Bird with a ‘55 Ford kit. Billy has a ‘69 Chevelle. Two pictures at a Halloween show. As you can see, getting it ready for the April 28 first show.

Cover Car ______________________________ Hi Folks, Attached to this email please find photos of my 1953 Model 1508 Chevrolet. I send this to you because I noticed you asked for photos of members cars. I purchased this car in mid-October 2013. I brought it home, parked it in the driveway and started work on it. People started stopping and asking me if it was for sale. I had no intention of selling as I just got it. One guy stopped and invited me to bring it to a Halloween community parade. The experience was priceless.Well I started cleaning it up and repairs were started. I purchased parts from National Chevy and started bringing it into shape. I started calling it “Dead Sled” and began going thru it. The previous owner had patched it up pretty bad.“Dead Sled” has a 1979 Firebird 350 with a Turbo 350 transmission. The Firebird also became a “donor” car for parts like power disc and drum brakes and also a 10-bolt rear end. It sports weld wheel rims and 245/60 tires on the back and “pizza cutter” front wheels. I started floorboard repairs and decided to go with a “Rat Rod” theme as it is not a show car candidate! I went with a coroners’ car theme and added funeral car treatments. It has antique “funeral car” signs on each side. Also a “coffin” taillight from some old chopper stuff I had. The exhausts are motorcycle “fishtails” that I took off my ‘74 Bobber. It has hearse side panels inside and a wooden “toe pincher” coffin. I got a grey leather bench front seat from a ‘92 Tahoe donor. I painted the dash and went with a billet panel and all new VDO

__________________________________Cover Cargauges. The nicer it started looking the more people would ask if the car was for sale. You know “everything is for sale” but no buyers offered me enough to make me sell it. It has 1949 front fenders and hood. I put skull radio knobs in it and, notice the chrome skeleton arm and hand on the Cadillac tilt steering. The door panels are old license plates. I pulled the old patched up wiring and rewired the whole car including new fuse box, and replaced all electrical components Waiting in the wings is a 1953 Cadillac rear bumper and a 1949 Ford grille bullet. As it continues to inspire me, who knows what I will do next. After all, “it is a Rat Rod and I know the owner.”

A big thanks to National Chevy for being my parts source!!!!

1954 Corvette Waldorf Nomad _____________

Storm spares rare Corvette

from sinkhole fate

by Andrew PantzlaffReprint from

The Brillion News(brillion, WI)

BRILLION - A 600-mile-long road trip could have turned into a 20-foot-deep nightmare for Zane Zander.

“I dodged a bullet, that’s for sure,” Zander said.

And there’s really no bet-ter way to put this ironic twist of fate for the 79-year-old Brillion, Wis. man.

He was supposed to take his impeccably, painstakingly recreated 1954 Cor-vette Nomad - one of only seven known to be in existence, and something that took more than a decade of planning and building to make - down to Bowling Green, Ky. on Monday. It was to be showcased at the National Corvette Muse-um as part of the museum’s 20th anniversary celebrations throughout the year.

“I was going to let the car off on Tuesday, and leave for home after putting the car to bed,” Zander said.

Mother Nature had different plans.A snowstorm – one of many in this especially brutal winter – swept through

the Midwest and ensured that the car wouldn’t be there as scheduled.Zander kept an eye on the forecast, consulted with friends who had been

near the storms, and ultimately made the decision to delay the trip and stay home.

That decision saved his 1954 Corvette Nomad from an almost unthinkable fate.

In the very spot that Zander’s car likely would have been, had he arrived as scheduled, a 20-foot-deep, 40-foot-wide sinkhole opened up in the early morning hours on Wednesday in the museum’s Sky Dome wing.

A line of other precious Corvettes were parked in the Sky Dome for display, and eight of these classic cars were swallowed by the sinkhole. Security cam-eras captured the astonishing scene, and the footage spread across national news broadcasts throughout the day, leaving viewers awestruck at the site of the ground literally disappearing into a black abyss while snatching rare cars and dragging them into sunken shadows.

The museum unofficially estimates it caused millions of dollars in damage, according to reports, and Zander has little reason to doubt his car would have been among the casualities.

“A lady from the museum called me on Friday afternoon, and, said ‘Well, you saw the news. It was bad news for us, but it was good news for you – be-cause that’s exactly where the car was headed,’” Zander said.

More than a carSeeing the footage on the news of the other cars falling into the sinkhole

couldn’t help but make Zander thankful his car didn’t make it.Sure, it’s a car – but it’s also years of memories, dreams, and collaboration,

too.“It’s not only my work that went into it. It’s very evident that a whole

lot of other peo-ple helped me. There’s a lot of pride working on something that by far exceeded expec ta t ions ,” Zander said.

The doors. The door handles. The tailgate. The tailgate’s window. The interior. The exterior. The dash. The fender. And on and on.

And on.And on. Without exag-

geration, every inch of the vehicle has a story of ingenu-ity, craftsmanship,

teamwork and more that Zander looks back on fondly.“There was so much that was put into this,” he said, noting recreating the

1954 Corvette Nomad was a special journey that required equal investments of time, money, hard work and patience.

Zander first started building and restoring cars in high school, joking that he was only inhibited in this hobby by business, family, Army and funds.

Zander is the former owner, printer and publisher at Zander Press, Inc. in Brillion, and has had longtime contributions to city affairs and community involvement.

He retired from Zander Press, Inc. at age 70 after 45 years in what is now a fourth-generation family business owned by his three daughters.

His recreation of the 1954 Nomad began in 1999. “The challenge of it” was something Zander said appealed to him.And it certainly was a challenge. A concept car at its inception, the Corvette Nomad was one of several cars

featured in the 1954 GM Motorama car shows that traveled throughout the United States. After its use in the Motorama, it was destroyed by GM.

The 1954 Nomad only existed in pictures and memories from then on. The only way to own one was to recreate one, and so Zander had a difficult journey ahead of him.

He used old photos, factory drawings and other items to document and re-produce this lost treasure, not to mention the help of plenty of neighbors, too.

“So many people helped make this car, and this whole thing was done locally,” Zander said.

From making custom stainless parts, to welding, wiring, painting and more, around two dozen Brillion-area businesses or individuals lent expertise and help for the vehicle.

It started with stripping and sand blasting a donor body, followed by the installation of a 1977 Camaro front frame.

Seven more years of an exhausting amount of patch-work and problem-solving followed from there. It was a sweet blend of triumphs and tribulations, setbacks and successes.

And, in 2006, the car – the dream – was finally a reality.According to Zander, it was as faithful a reproduction of 1954 Corvette

Nomad, which in some circles is referred to as the Waldorf Nomad, as he could have ever have hoped to build. The Waldorf name is derived from its first view-ing location, the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.

The only deviations from those images and designs he used as source mate-rial were some added modern-day extras – power windows, air conditioning and an AM-FM radio – that were included to enhance the driving experience.

Handle with careZander took his finished car to an all-GM car show at the state fairgrounds

in Minneapolis, Minn. around 2006. He had no idea that they had a Best in Show award when he arrived.

He certainly knew about it when he left. Out of all the cars at the show, his was the one selected as the Best of Show.

“For all those people to think that – and these are car people – that was really something,” Zander said.

Still, this adulation is not something that matters to Zander. With so much invested in the car – both in money and in meaning –

Zander has always been careful with the car.He did not take it to any shows last year, and has always been selective

about where he displays the car, not wanting weather or other factors to lead to any damages.

“I got more satisfaction out of making it, than getting pats on the back about it,” Zander said.

That’s where the irony lies a bit, in that while being so selective about where to display his Corvette, it wouldn’t seem all that plausible that an indoor, out-of-the-elements spot in a National Corvette Museum would harbor such catastrophic potential.

It’s a place that routinely houses and cares for expensive and rare vehi-cles, and Zander had no hesitation about bringing his silver-blue treasure, the 1954 Corvette Nomad, down to Kentucky to be part of the museum’s anniversary year.

Under the Sky Dome’s towering 100-foot high ceiling is a circular chamber that showcases everything from Indianapolis 500 and Daytona 500 pace cars, to 70 unique Corvettes, and more.

Zander’s car was to be among the featured vehicles, and was to stay through Labor Day.

To think about what could have been had his car made it down there is a sickening feeling for Zander.

“I spent seven years building it, but it’s for sale now, and that’s part of the reason I was bringing it down there, to see if someone would be interested in maybe buying it, so I’ve already conditioned myself to [say goodbye to it], but not like that. I would have been very sick,” Zander said. “I was really lucky.”

The casualtiesThose that weren’t so lucky were eight valuable Corvettes that were

also at the Bowling Green museum included:– a 1962 “Black Corvette” – a 1984 PPG pace car – a 2009 ZR1 “Blue Devil” – the 1992 white “1 Millionth Corvette” – a 1993 ruby red “40th Anniversary Corvette” – a 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette – the 2009 white “1.5 Millionth Corvette” – a 1993 ZR-1 Spyder.Of the eight cars that fell, Corvette enthusiasts donated six to the

museum, and the car’s maker, General Motors, owns two. The total damages done to the car and the museum because of the

massive sinkhole was substantial, but geologists and engineers using re-mote-controlled drones determined that there was no structural damage to the Sky Dome.

The area where the sinkhole took place will be closed off indefinitely, but the rest of the museum will remain open.

Researchers found caves under the structure, which isn’t all that sur-prising, due to the museum being a short drive from the Mammoth Cave National Park.

The National Corvette Museum is also looking to get things back in order. It is preparing for a 20th anniversary celebration that will help open a 184-acre Motorsports Park in August. Roughly 5,000 people are already pre-registered to attend the park’s grand opening.

Once the museum gets its facilities back in order, Zander said he still plans on taking his 1954 Corvette Nomad down to Kentucky to be part of the celebration.

The creation of the dash presented another unique construction problem as the fiberglass lower dash was designed to fit under the traditional metal dash. First, a second bump was required in the upper metal to accommodate the ’54 Corvette dash, as well as moving the original one on the drivers’ side to a 28-inch on center a one inch on each side from the donor body dash of 30 inches. The picture also shows how the dash had to be reshaped

upward and backward to slip up and under the metal shaped upper dash. In the lower right hand corner the picture demonstrates how the 3 ½ inches has been taken out of the lower portion of the door, allowing all the window elevating mechanism fastener locations to remain intact.

________________1954 Corvette Waldorf NomadThe changing of the rear tailgate from a two-piece to a one-piece and the cre-ation of a window that low-ers into the tailgate changed the donor body consider-ably. The rear drip gutter on the original body was con-structed into the upper tail-gate. That water gutter had to be replaced by cutting off the rear portion of a standard wagon and reattaching it to the back of the donor body. Additional structure had to be designed to support the glass that will come up out of the tailgate.

The tailgate of the 1954 Nomad features a window that retracts into the lower tailgate. It was one of the revolutional features of the 1954 Corvette Nomad. This entire feature had to be de-signed to hinge from the car and accept the lowering tailgate glass. Components of a mid ‘80s Suburban tailgate were utilized as it provided the straightest glass path and a compatible ends to fit the donor body. Note on this picture that the

fiberglass has been completed from the fender to the body proper and the area below the lower tailgate.

One of the major accom-plishments of the Nomad project was the fitting and installing of the fiberglass front shell. To keep the proper body side plane, it was necessary to spread the fiberglass front shell one (1) inch on each side. The installation also required shortening of the hood opening area, designing a platform to support the shell and recasting the lower rears of the front fenders. The final portion of

this project was to quarter the hood spreading it two (2) inches to fit the spread front and the shortening to accommodate the windshield-to-hood opening space.

One of the major features of the Nomad was the round shape of the rear wheel opening. To accom-plish this, pieces of curved fenders were found in junk yards (note different colors of paint), all with the same shape of the fender. They were clamped to a frame contoured to the shape of the side of the car, then fitted and welded to the shape of the wheel opening. You will note the gas door of a different color. Its selec-tion was because the gas

door opening had to be hinged correctly. You will also note how the taillight portion of the fender has been attached to metal extended off of the rear quarter.

Reconstructing the doors created a unique situation as the door handles on the original ’55 model body were attached by bolts. The ’54 style door handles that were on the Corvette Nomad were fastened to the car in a different wedge-type arrangement prevalent to ’53-54 Chevrolets and required the installation of the complete metal panel into the outside door panel of the Nomad donor body

door. The picture also shows the rocker panel installed and the rear fender wells installed.

An extremely helpful tool for the small restorers’ workshop is this handy tool that tips the car on rockers on one side of the car. This was utilized in the welding procedure required under the car. You could stand and weld with easy access to tools. Working on one side welding all the facing welds, the procedure was reversed as the direction of the lift was reversed. Note that the fiberglass rear fend-ers have been attached in the desired location.

Tech Help _______________________________

I have had a lot of people call me asking how to install their clutch linkage, so I thought I would put it in the newsletter to help some of you out.

Step 1: First you want to start to install the threaded rod with jam nuts onto the clutch fork.

Step 2: Then install rod with loop onto the front of the master cylinder. Then slip the loop over the threaded rod.

Step 3: Then hook the S hook into slot on the frame, then put spring onto other side of the S hook, and install the spring onto the threaded rod.

Thanks Eddie

____________________________ Now Showing1949-54 These are pictures of my 1951 Chevy Sports Coupe. I bought it a few years ago in Ohio. I am the fifth owner of it. It is completely original except for the interior which had gotten very tender after 60 years. It never had any body work and the paint is original, but getting thin in some places. She still rides and drives like new. I did put a Fenton split manifold on the old 216, which has about 75,000 miles. I hope you can print the picture of my pride and joy. I have complete history from new. She has won several trophies at local shows.
