iv Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL: Solutions Manager

Introduction

The Tivoli Solutions Manager is designed to control the updating of Tivolivariables throughout the network on any computer having Tivoli ManagementSolution for Microsoft SQL installed. A variable is a placeholder for a value or a setof values.

By using Tivoli Solutions Manager, Tivoli variables are no longer edited on eachmachine separately. They can be edited from a central location, saving valuabletime.

The Tivoli Solutions Manager represents the network using the Windows NTdomain and computer networking hierarchy. In Windows NT, a domain representsan enterprise of computers that share common account administration and security. An individual computer is a member of a domain.

The Tivoli Solutions Manager fully complies with the Windows NT securitysystem. Consequently, the computers that can be managed by the Tivoli SolutionsManager are constrained by the underlying security in place on the network.

Exiting the Solutions ManagerYou can exit The Tivoli Solutions Manager by:1. Selecting the File menu and then selecting the Close menu item.2. Clicking the Tivoli Solutions Manager icon in the upper left corner of the main

window and then selecting the Close menu item.3. Clicking the close box on the title bar of the main window.

Options

To display confirmations for update operations, click the confirm all updateoperations box.

To display success messages for all operations, click the display success messagesbox. Note that any unsuccessful operations will generate error messages even if thedisplay success messages box is not checked.

Changing OptionsYou can change whether Tivoli Solutions Manager asks you for confirmationsbefore performing specific classes of operations. To change the confirmationoptions, select the View menu from the Tivoli Solutions Manager and then selectthe Options menu item. The following operations can be set to require or suppressconfirmation before the operation. Confirmation can be set independently on eachof the two operation types.

Confirming Update OperationsWhen the Confirm all Update Operations box is checked, the Tivoli SolutionsManager will identify the operation you are about to perform and will ask you toconfirm the operation. Clicking Yes will result in the operation being performed.Clicking No will cause the operation to be cancelled.

If the Confirm all Update Operations box is not checked, the Tivoli SolutionsManager will perform requested operations without asking for confirmation first.

Displaying Success MessagesWhen the Display Success Messages box is checked, the Tivoli Solutions Managerwill inform you when the requested operation was successfully performed. Byclicking the OK button, the success message will then be dismissed.

If the Display Success Messages box is not checked, you will not receive a messageindicating the operation was successful. In fact the lack of a message indicatessuccess, as operations that generate errors are always reported by a message.

TerminologyDomain

In Windows NT, a domain represents an enterprise of computers that sharecommon account administration and security. An individual computer is amember of a domain.

Float Floating point variables are stored as IEEE 32-bit (4-byte) floating-pointnumbers, ranging in value from -3.402823E38 to -1.401298E-45 for negativevalues and from 1.401298E-45 to 3.402823E38 for positive values.

EnterpriseAn Enterprise is a named cluster of domains and computers that has norelationship to real Windows NT domains. Enterprises exist to provide fora more flexible way of updating settings on computers in differentdomains. For example, if the Enterprise is clicked in the Network Display, all of the Solution Sets and their Variables existing on all computersrunning Tivoli Enterprise Management Solutions are shown in the VariableDisplay. The values of the Variables will be blank. When you edit any ofthese variables, the changes are made to all computers running TivoliEnterprise Management Solutions in the network.

14 Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL: Solutions Manager

IntegerInteger variables are stored as numbers ranging in value from -32,768 to32,767.

Left and Right Mouse ButtonsThe proper terminology for the mouse buttons is primary and secondary. The default mouse button configuration assigns the left mouse button asthe primary mouse button and the right mouse button as the secondary.Because of this setup, the common terminology is left and right mousebutton rather than primary and secondary mouse button. We have adoptedthis common terminology. Consequently, when we say left mouse button,we actually mean the primary mouse button and when we say right mousebutton, we actually mean the secondary mouse button.

ObjectAn object refers to an enterprise, domain, computer, variable, Variabledisplay, Solution Set, Solution Set Tabs, Toolbar, or Status Bar.

RefreshThe Tivoli Solutions Manager will poll a specified Object and update theTivoli Solutions Manager’s view of that object. Refreshing is useful ifchanges have been made by another Tivoli Solutions Manager programrunning elsewhere in the network. It ensures that the configurationrepresented to you by the Tivoli Solutions Manager is synchronized withthe actual configuration on each computer in the network.

Solution SetSolution Sets are predefined assemblages of variables.

String A string is a fundamental data type that holds character information. Astring variable can contain approximately 65,535 bytes (64K), isfixed-length or variable-length, and contains one character per byte.Fixed-length strings are declared to be a specific length. Variable-lengthstrings can be any length up to 64K, less a small amount of storageoverhead.

Unit Text that describes the unit associated with the value. For example:megabytes or transactions per second.

VariableA variable is a placeholder for a value or a set of values.

Variable TypeThe class of information that can be stored in a variable. The differentVariable Types used include Float, Integer, and String.

Getting HelpThere are a variety of ways to get help. The Help menu in the main window of theTivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL provides four separate options:v Contents displays the main Help window.v Search for Help On displays the Index tab for this help file.v About Solutions Manager displays the product name and version of the
