1) The first bit of information is the production company which is paramount pictures – a major production company. This suggests the film has quite a large budget. The Nickelodeon movies suggest that this is a film that is aimed at a younger audience as it is a branch of the children’s channel ‘Nickelodeon’. The font is swirly which is quite child like and is white which connotes innocence which strengthens the fact that this is for a younger audience.

2) The name of the director appears very soon into the film beginning to show the importance of them regarding their role in the film making process. The text enters and exits very simplistically with no effects- it just appears and disappears.

3) The name of the Film appears near the very beginning of film to reveal some of the narrative. The previous transitions of the text do not continue with this one. To show its importance and relevance it fades in a fades out- subsequently lasting for a longer time (around double the amount of time the credited names are on screen for). Moreover, the font is clearly larger which again puts emphasis on its importance.

4) The first actors name to appear is the leading actor. This shows the importance that they have in the film. Moreover, because of the amount of work they have to do, they deserve more of an acknowledgement. The transitioning of the text is much like the earlier ones- it just appears and then disappears with no obvious or interesting effects.

5) Another actor is shown and the fact that his name is near the beginning shows that he has an important role in the film. However, from watching the film- I would say that other characters have more of a role in the film than he does. He might be one of the first names to appear as he is possibly the most famous out of the cast which would attract more people to the film and make them continue to watch it. Moreover, he is a comedian which conveys across the element of comedy in this film

6) This actor is also a comedian which again strengthens the fact that this film has elements of comedy in it. The fact that her name appears near the beginning of the film shows that she is an important character in the film

7/8/9) All of these actors are featured near the beginning of the opening sequence which shows that they are important to the storyline of the film. The transitioning of the text is exactly the same as the previous ones showing that they do not have more importance.

10/11) These are the last of the actors credited in the opening sequence. The fact that they are grouped together shows they have less of a role in the film.

12) Here, other parts involved in the making of this film are credited (the people who did the casting). This flows nicely on from the actors as these were the people responsible for casting them

13) Music is credited here and the main person in charge of music gets credited singularly. However, this person and the others after them get less time on screen than the actors did. Showing that their role in the making of the film was not as great as the actors.

14) These people get credited together, mainly because their job in the film is the same, but also that their role in not particularly big.

15/16) These people get credited singularly showing that they are quite important, however, their time on screen is not very long compared to the actors. Emphasis in the 16th shot in on the costume which ties in with the fact that they are crediting the costume designer.

17) The editors names are shown together here. This speeds up opening sequence as if they were shown individually, it would go on for too long.

18) The production designer is shown later in the sequence as it is not a position most people take notice at when watching a film. They show the actors first as that is usually what sparks interest within the audience.

19/20) These roles in the film making are not the most major and therefore shown later in the opening sequence.

22/23) This film is based on books so they are therefore credited near the end of the opening sequence. Also the author is credited showing their importance in this film.

21) The producers are shown but the director’s name is first because she is more important in the making of the film.

Page 11: Title Research (task 7)

25) The fact that the director is mentioned again at the end of the opening scene highlights their sheer importance in the film and showcases their effort.

24) These people have more of an important role in the film so they are shown almost at the last point of the opening sequence. This is because people usually remember the first and last things they see.

10 Things I Hate About You

1) The production company appears first. It is owner by The Walt Disney Company which suggests that their films will be of quality. The black background puts emphasis on the company as it is of significant importance to the making of the film.

2) This company features second showing that it is still of great importance to the film but not as much as touchstone pictures

10 Things I Hate About You

3) This is the title of the film. The text reveals part of the narrative as is looks like scribbles which you associate with anger and school work. The underlining of the word “you” suggests that there will be a person in this film causing a character a lot of pain and hate towards them. There is non-diegetic music which puts emphasis on the words as there is no story happening in the background. Moreover, the music is a song that is quite old now show shows the audience the age of the film and when in is set.

Page 14: Title Research (task 7)

4-10) These actors play the main characters in the film and there is no narrative story going on at this point which puts emphasis on their roles in this film, showing them to be people of significant importance.

Page 15: Title Research (task 7)

11-13) These names come after a bit of narrative is revealed showing that they play a less important role in the film. Moreover the word “and” at the end of these names signifies that these are the last of the major actors to be shown

10 Things I Hate About You

Page 16: Title Research (task 7)

14) These are the minor roles that are played and this is shown by the fact they are credited together instead of individually.

15) In this film, much like the previous one, the casting is after the actors as it flows nicely

10 Things I Hate About You

Page 17: Title Research (task 7)

16-21) In this scene, six people are credited. The fact that there is a narrative story going on lessens the importance that these people play in the making of this film as most people are concentrating on the story and not the names. Moreover, the names are shown for less time and take up less on the screen space compared to the major actors.10 Things I Hate About You

Page 18: Title Research (task 7)

22-25) These people in the role of the making of the film are all in the same scene which shows they all have a similar amount of importance. The executive producers are each shown individually which shows that they are rather important in the making of the film. However, the narrative continues which diverts attention away from the film.

10 Things I Hate About You

Page 19: Title Research (task 7)

26-28) These names all feature at the end of the opening scene which shows that they are quite important as people usually remember the first and last things that the see. The directors always seem to be the last people to be shown in the opening sequence.

1) Two production companies are featured first. The text is accompanied with the non-diegetic song “slim shady” and with non-diegetic sirens which reveals part of the narrative which is to do with cops.

2) This comes second which implies it is of less importance to the film but still a major part as there is nothing else to look at and the colours are extremely bold

Page 21: Title Research (task 7)

3) The last bit of information in the opening is another production company- no actors or directors are shown which is rather unconventional of an opening. The explanation for this is that it is featured at the end as the film ends on a cliff hanger and more credits are shown to spark more excitement within the audience.

4) The title of the film shows colours which are associated with the police and reveals part of the action theme of this film.
