Inthepost-ColdWarinternationalrelations うthe UnitedStates うbacked byitsmilitary

powermatchedbynone , exertssignificantinfluenceinworlda旺airs うa phenomenonthatis

recentlyregardedastheemergenceofanewimpire.Anempireinthiscaseisbroadlydefined

asatransnationalregimesurpassingnation-statesingovernance. Still ぅwhat isthenature

ofempires?Howdoempireskeeptheirgovernanceoverterritoriesmuchlargerthannationｭ

states?Scholarsneedtotakeafreshlookatthesequestionsthatarisefromrelatingsystems

anddynamicsofempiresandmodernnation-states.

Inthisresearchproject うwe intendtoinvestigateinstitutionsandmechanismsofempiresin

Asiaduringthreedi 旺erent periods:(1)Chineseempire(17thcenturytoearly19thcentury);

(2)European(primarilyBritish)imperialism(mid-19th centurytomid-20th century);(3)

Americansupremacy(crommid-20th centl町onwards). Inexaminingthesethreecases ぅ

wefocusontheirrelationstotheasianregionaleconomy.TherecentscholarshipofAsian

economichistoryfocusesontheintegrationoftheregionaleconomydatingbacktothe

17th century. Atthesametime , anumberofscholarsobservethatthenetworksofAsian

merchants(e.g ・ うChinese andIndianmerchants)haveplayedkeyrolesindirectingflowsof

goods うlabor うand capitalintheregion. Howhavethebusinessnetworkssafelysustained

tradeinthesethreecases?HowhastheeconomicorderinAsiaevolvedoverthepastfive

hundredyearsorso? Ourworkinghypothesesarethat ヲon theonehand , empiresprovide

variousinstitutionstoenhanceintra-regionaleconomicintegrationinAsia.Someare “soft"infrastructureslikethefreedomofmercantileactivitiespromisedbytheChineseempire ,theprincipleoffreetradeexecutedbytheBritishEmpireandtheUnitedStates ,andthefinancial

Whythendoesracemaintainitssocialrealitysopervasively? Thisstudy うfollowing our

previousprojectontheideaofrace ぅaims toexaminerealityofraceintermsofitsexpression

andrepresentation. Theresearchaimstoexaminenotonlydominantideasofrace うbut

alsocontestationandchallengeofracialrepresentationsbyminoritiesthemselves.Research

Thisprojectaimstoreconsidersocio-historicalcontextsinwhichtheconceptoffetish/

fetishismemergedandhasdevelopedintheWestandbeyond.Fetisheswere"discovered"in

WestAfricabyPortuguesetraders.FetishismwascoinedbyaFrenchscholar , deBrossin

17thcentury うand later うin 19thcentury うled toaheateddebateovertheoriginofreligion.It

wasalsousedbyMarxtocharacterizethenatureofcommoditiesandbyFreudforatypeof

sexualorientalism.Fetish/Fetishismisakeyconcepttounderstandnotonlythehistoryof

Westernsocialthoughts , butWesternviewsofhuman-objectrelationship.

turyEurope.Itistakentocarryanideaofuniversalvalueforwhichithasbeenpursued

hasstirredupaseriesofcriticisms. Fromthelatterpointofview"Enlightenment"isthe

keycriticalconceptthroughwhichthemodernsocietyre 自ects onitselfinthecourseofits

organizationandre-organization.Rethinkingof"Enlightenment 門in thissensebycontempoｭ

raryphilosopherssuchasHabermas ,FoucaultandDerridatestifiestotheimportanceofthis

conceptinthestudyofintellectualhistoryorinhumanitiestoday ぅhaving witnessed“cris isう う

discussionofnotablecasesinpre-modernEastAsianandWestEuropeansocieties.

ChinesebronzemirrorsarehighlyappreciatedbyarchaeologistsofChinaandJapan うfor

theyareeminentlyusefulforstudyofchronology. Besidesthedesignproper うthere are

inscriptionsonagreatmanymirrorsinHanage.

Themirrorinscriptionshavenotquitebeenthesubjectsofacomprehensivestudy うbecause

thecontentandthelanguageoftheinscriptionsaresometimesverydi 血cult ofanalysis.To

the7thcentury. HebroughtbacknewinformationaboutIndia ぅwhere somechangeshad

occurredafterthetimeofXuanzang. Histravelswereespeciallyimportantbecausethey

openedanewroutebetweenChinaandIndiabywayofTibetandNepal. Althoughthe

travelaccountwhichhewrotewasnowlostandcanonlybefoundfragmentarilyinsomeold

books うepigraphic textsconcernedwiththisfigurehaverecentlybeenfoundoneafteranother
