History
It was found in Germany in Cornish Beach sands.
William Gregor found it but didn’t give a name
Titanium comes from Titan, from Greek mythology
Klaproth found Titanium in 1795Reverend William Gregor found the element in 1791
Klaproth found a few years later and named it Titanium
Availability It is found bound to igneous rocks and there derived sediments. It’s also not very easy to extract from rocks.
Trying to find more efficient methods.
Costs about 0.65 cents for 100 grams.
Uses
By itself, it is used for eyeglass frames for its durability
Mainly used in place of steel because it is lighter and has same strength
Fun Fact: 60% lighter than aluminum, but 100% stronger and 45% lighter than steel, with equal Durability.
Properties
The state at room temperature is a solid, has a putty like gray color to it
Melting point at 1668°C
Boiling point at 3287°C
Density is 4.5 g/cm³
Not radioactive
Great properties to have because of uses
Since it has high melting point, makes it great for laptops, watches, and desalination plants
Because of weight, starting to take place of steel
Fun Facts
6th most abundant element on Earth Only element that burns in nitrogen Used in almost all fireworks (potassium
perchlorate mixed with pure titanium)
