This even ing, we honor two extraordinary and inspir ing alumni - Dana i Gur ira and Andre Holland -both from our Graduate Act ing Program. Since we last gathered at the Tisch Gala, we have begun construction at 181 Mercer Street , the new home to our Performing Arts Center , and we w ill soon be expanding to the Med ia, Technology and Arts comp lex at 370 Jay Street in Brook lyn . These exciting new centers will prov ide vita lly needed space for our student to cross and collaborate.

On behalf of the ent ire NYU community, I am delighted to welcome you to a most special evening : the 2017 Tisch School of the Arts Gala.

Tonight we ce lebrate two dazzling alumni , Danai Gur ira and Andre Ho lland . Dana i's four celebrated and groundbreak ing plays have made her one of the theater 's brightest voices - on top of being an accomp lished actress and deeply engaged advocate for women and gir ls Andre has consistent ly sought out roles of substance and nuance , leading him to cr it ica l acc laim as an actor in television , the stage, and fi lm , includ ing the w inner of this year's Academy Award for Best Picture.

Of course , Danai and Andre are not only consummate art ists. They are also friends and co lleagues who met in the classrooms and performance spaces of the Tisch School of the Arts. Together, they have appeared on New York City 's b iggest stages, from Broadway to Shakespeare in the Park to, most recent ly , The New York Times.

Dana i and Andre embody the magic that happens at NYU Tisch - where the world's most talented young artists hone the ir craft , insp ire each other, and go on to make their own un ique and lasting mark on the wor ld of the arts.

Danai Gurira is an award-winn ing p laywright and actress. As a playwright, her works include: In the Continuum (OBIE Award , Outer Cr itics Award, Helen Hayes Award), Eclipsed (Tony Award Nom ination: Best Play, NAACP Award; Helen Hayes Award : Best New Play ; Connecticut Cr itics Circle Award Outstanding Production of a Play), and The Convert (six Ovation Awards, Los Ange les Outer Cr itics Award) . Danai's newest play Familiar rece ived its world premiere at Ya le Rep in 2015 and prem iered in

New York at Playwrights Horizons in February of 2016.

She is a recipient of the Sam Norkin Award at the 2016 Drama Desk Awards , a Wh it ing Award, a Hodder Fellow , and has been commiss ioned by Yale Rep , Center Theatre Group, Playwrights Hor izons , and the Royal Court . She is currently developing a pilot for HBO.

As an actor , she has appeared in the films The Visitor , Mother of George , she also played Isabella in NYSF's Measure for Measure (Equity Callaway Award) . She current ly p lays Michonne on AMC's The Walking Dead (NAACP Image Award nom inat ion) and recently wrapped product ion on the Tupac Shakur b iopic All Eyez on Me. Danai next goes into production on Marve l's Black Panther where she w ill star as Okoye .

She holds an MFA from Tisch , NYU. She was born in the US to Zimbabwean parents and raised in Z imbabwe. She serves as an ambassador for Bone 's ONE campa ign and is the founder of LOGpledge.org, an awareness build ing campaign focused on the plights of women and g irls around the g lobe .

She is also the co -founder of Almasi Arts , wh ich works to g ive access and opportunity to the Afr ican Dramatic Arti st (almasiartsa l liance.org).

Andre Holland is a native of Birmingham , Alabama, and gained an undergraduate degree from Florida State Univers ity before earn ing an MFA from New York Univers ity's Graduate Acting Program Shortly after graduation, he received acclaim for his tour-de-force performance as four generations of a family in the play Blue Door at Playwrights Horizons .

Holland can curren t ly be seen in Barry Je nkins· Moonlight . The A24 com ing-of-age drama received several awards including the 2017 Academy Award for Best Picture. the 2017 Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Drama, and the 2017 lnd ie Spir it Award for Best Feature . The strong ensemble rece ived severa l acco lades including a 2016 Gotham Independent Film Award, 2017 Critics Cho ice Awards , and a 2017 lnd ie Spirit Award. Holland recent ly wrapped production on Ava DuVernay ·s adaption of Madeleine L'Eng le's A Wrinkle in Time, alongside Mindy Kaling , Reese Witherspoon , and Oprah W infrey. He w ill next film Widows , directed by Steve McQueen and featur ing Vio la Dav is. Cynth ia Erivo. and Liam Neeson .

SAM SCALAMO NI (DIR ECTOR) Sam is a freelance New York based d irector of theatre and spec ial events across the US and world w ide and d irected last year's 50th Ann iversary Tisch Gala. He is the director of the critically acclaimed Nationa l Tours of Elf the Musical. He also d irected the Nationa l Tour of Nicke lodeon 's Storytime Live! for Broadway Across America wh ich broke box office records at Radio City Music Hall, and the Nationa l Tour of The Gazill ion Bubb le Show . Sam is current ly the Associate Director of the current Nationa l and Int ernat ional Tours of Disney's Beauty and the Beast wh ich he also supervised on Broadway and mounted mult iple compan ies worldw ide. He also served as Associate Director for Elton John's Broadway mus ical Lestat . Current ly in deve lopment is a new musical, 7000 Faces , based on the life of fi lm legend Lon Chaney , a stage adaptat ion of the MGM mus ica l Summer Stock , and Unbelievable, about baseba ll legend Jackie Mitche ll. Sam current ly serves as the Artistic Director of Skyl ine Theatre Company , a professiona l non -profit theatre company in New Jersey. ANDY YA NN I '08 (SCE NIC & DECOR DESIGNER) Andy is a theatr ical, interior , furn iture, graph ic, and event des igner, a carpenter , and a furn iture maker, as well as an upst ate New York -born, Long Island-ra ised , first generat ion bi lingua l child of Egyptian immigrants . He has spent numerous years as a des igner in a high-end resident ial interior des ign firm w hile work ing as a freelance graph ic des igner and serv ing as a Stagehand on recent Bro adway shows includ ing Beautifu l the Caro l Kin g Musical , Finding Never/and, Les Miserables , and Gigi. As a frequent Off-Off-Broad w ay and Off-Broad w ay theatre des igner , Andy has designed and built scenery for over 10 years in venues throughout NY C and is a two-time New York Innovat iv e Theatre Awards Nominee in Set Des ign in 2012 for Pipeline Theatre Company's Fe lix and the Diligence and in 2013 for Libra Theatre Company 's The Thirteenth Commandment .
